        “Ideological Becoming” of U.S. Versus International Teaching Assistants (TAs)

        This comparative study examines “ideological becoming” of three teaching assistants from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds in the media communication field. Drawing on Bakhtin’s dialogism as the theoretical framework of language and analysis, this study uncovers each TA’s “speaking personality,” that is their voice, as manifested through the dialogic interactions between the TAs and their students in a studio lab context. Data were collected over the course of one year and consisted of field notes, 28 hours of recorded speech data between the TAs and their students, TAs’ post-observational interviews, and student focus group interviews. The analysis of five episodes from the three TAs’ lab sessions reveals different types and degrees of struggle for appropriating voice in the case of the international TAs (and not for the U.S. TA). These findings suggest that for second/foreign language speakers, the process of self-authoring involves mastery of social discourse that displays membership in a particular social context that goes beyond acquiring the rules of language. A practical implication for this research is the way in which it highlights the value of the Bakhtinian perspective as a tool for monitoring L2 learners’ everyday dialogues with the other.

        Engineering Students` Writing Performance in a College-Level Writing Class: An Appraisal Investigation

        This study investigates the writing of engineering freshmen in an introductory college composition class in Korea. Using Appraisal framework developed by Martin and White (2005), writing samples of 12 Korean students across three graded levels-strong (A), average (B), and weak (C)-were compared from their draft stage to their final version. Applying the Appraisal system and the subsystem of Attitude (Affect, Judgment, and Appreciation), Appraisal coding of the 24 samples of student writing was conducted. The results reveal a significant achievement gap between high-graded (strong) and low-graded (weak) students’ writing in their utilization of Appraisal resources, specifically in the use of Attitude resources. Moreover, it was found that while significant or satisfactory progress was made during the revision process in the instances of Appraisal resources in the strong as well as average students’ writing, low graded level students’ writing did not show any sign of progress but rather a regression or setback in their performance. This study calls for the application of Appraisal lexis as a rhetorical strategy to enable student writers to utilize the constructive role of evaluation in creating interpersonal meaning with readers, specifically among those engineering majors who possess weak writing skills.

        Lexicogrammar as a Meaning-Making Resource: A Systemic Functional Approach to Second Language (L2) Writing in Cross-Border Education

        This study explores the thematic features of academic writing produced by Korean freshmen in an undergraduate pathway composition program at a U.S. university in Korea. Using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as a theoretical framework that views lexicogrammar as a meaning-making resource, the study analyzes writing samples of 22 students who are enrolled in the first sequence of pathway composition course within the English curriculum, which incorporates Rhetorical Genre Studies (RGS) into English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pedagogy. The focus of the analysis is on SFL’s textual metafunctions realized through the students’ deployment of Themes and thematic progression in their final papers. All of the students’ writing samples were analyzed quantitatively using an average number of words, T-units, and clauses per composition to measure syntactic complexity of student writing. Of the total student papers, nine representative samples across three graded levels (strong = A, average = B, weak = C) were qualitatively analyzed in terms of Theme choices and range as well as thematic progression to examine the relationship between the overall level of performance and linguistic evidence for such performance. The SFL-based pedagogic implications were drawn to call for the significance of knowledge about language (KAL) in academic writing for EAP teachers as well as English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) students.

        Investigating ESL Students’ Timed Essays for Mainstream Composition Class Placement : Insights From Appraisal Theory

        This study investigates timed writing among English as a Second Language (ESL) students that was used to place the students into mainstream composition courses in a U.S. academic institution. The student essays were analyzed using Martin and White’s (2005) appraisal framework evolved within a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) paradigm. Data consist of graded timed essays written by twelve ESL students representing five different countries (China, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam). This analysis was compared with written comments by the institution’s first language (L1) compositionist (the first?year writing program director, the so?called “gatekeeper”). The results, similar to major appraisal research findings (Hood, 2006; Lee, 2007), reveal distinctive differences in the utilization of appraisal resources between students with passing grades and those with failing grades. In addition, subtle differences were found between students with passing grades and those with borderline passing grades in their use of explicit versus implicit values of ATTITUDE resources within the appraisal system. The study concludes with pedagogical as well as theoretical implications of appraisal theory that are potentially valuable tools to facilitate L2 writing and research.

        포스트휴먼 시대의 ‘주적(主敵)’들의 재현: 스페인 영화와 괴물들

        한 사회가 주적을 괴물에 비유하는 수사는 사회 구성원들을 단결시키는 효율적인 수단으로 세계 보편적으로 사용되어 왔으나, 이는 적으로 정의된 집단의 다양한 구성원들을 단순화하고 대상화하며 나아가 비인간화하는 폭력적인 인식을 만든다. 본 연구는 이를 극복하기 위해 포스트휴먼 주체의 특징인 의식의 유연성과 복수성(複數性), 차이를 긍정하고 포용하는 태도가 필요하며, 주적-괴물을 다루는 세 편의 영화 <벌집의 영>, <야수의 날>, <판의 미로>에서 그런 포스트휴먼 주체의 특징을 구체적으로 볼 수 있음을 논한다. <벌집의 영>은 내전 직후 스페인 사회가 절대적으로 타자화하고 배척한 공화파에 속했던 사람들의 죽음을 애도함으로써 주적-괴물을 인간의 위치로 귀환시키고, <야수의 날>은 괴물에게 투영된 스스로의 믿음을 의심하고 서로 대립하는 현실의 해석들을 동시에 유지하는 경험을 제공하며, <판의 미로>는 의식 안에 존재하는 낯선 관점들의 대립을 통해 성장하고 부조리에 맞서는 주체를 재현한다. 세 작품의 주인공들은 모두 괴물에의 두려움을 극복하고 괴물에게 접근해서 새로운 앎과 가치를 성취한다. 이들은 선과 악 또는 정상과 비정상이라는 경계의 한쪽을 택하는 대신 경계 위에 머물며 이분법의 한계를 넘어서는 의식의 능력을 보여준다. It is commonly emphasized that the metaphor of the monster is a rhetoric universally used to identify the “main enemy” of a society, for its effective function is seen as useful for the uniting of citizens to bend together to survive or succeed before the external threat. The problem of this metaphor is that it homogenizes and dehumanizes the heterogeneous individual members of the subsequently identified enemy group. This study emphasizes the importance of some traits of the posthuman subject, such as the flexibility and the multiplicity of consciousness, to overcome the otherizing binary perspective which is commonly held regarding the concepts of good and evil. To observe specific dimensions of the posthuman consciousness, we analyze three films based on Spanish history and reality: The Spirit of the Beehive, The Day of the Beast and Pan’s Labyrinth. All of these films progress around the figure of the enemy-monster(s), showing how to transgress the dichotomous structure of consciousness that defines the self/good dividing it from the other/evil. The heroes in the films seek to overcome the fear about the monster, and approach him to discover new ethical horizons, that can emerge only when an individual’s consciousness chooses to stay on the border between the established beliefs and the unfamiliar voice of the dangerous stranger(s).

      • 중심정맥 카테터 끝의 위치에 따른 합병증에 대한 통계적 유의성

        본 논문은 중심정맥삽입술시 카테터 끝의 위치에 따른 기능 및 합병증을 조사, 검토하여 카테터의 정량적 기능평가와 카테터 위치와의 연계성을 알아보고 적절한 카테터 위치에 따른 통계적 유의성을 알아보고자 한다. 2009년 1월 1일 부터 2009년 12월 31일 까지 본원 영상의학과 혈관조영실에서 중심정맥삽입술을 시행 한 환자 490명을 대상으로 하였으며 시술 후 진행된 흉부 촬영을 통해 영상의학과 전공의 2명이 카테터의 위치를 파악하였다. 카테터의 위치는 상대정맥, 상대정맥과 우심방의 경계부, 우심방, 기타의 4그룹으로 분류하였고, 카테터 위치에 따른 합병증을 조사하였다. 합병증은 부정맥 발생과 카테터의 기능상실 여부를 비교 하였다. 시술 후 흉부촬영에 의해 분석된 카테터의 위치는 상대정맥에 위치한 그룹 115명, 상대정맥과 우심방의 경계부 177명, 우심방 188명, 기타 10명으로 조사되었다. 기타그룹은 통계적 표본수가 적어 제외 되었다. 부정맥 발생율은 우심방의 경계부에 비해 상대정맥은 1.33배(p=1.000) 더 낮게 나타났고, 우심방은 0.538배(p=0.687)로 더 높게 나왔다. 카테터의 기능 평가면 에서는 우심방의 경계부에 비해 상대정맥은 0.640배(p=0.523)로 카테터 기능 상실율이 더 컸으며, 우심방은 0.361(p=0.059)배로 상실률이 컸다. 중심정맥 카테터 삽입 시 카테터 위치는 여러 문헌상에 우심방 경계부에 위치해야 한다고 권고하고 있으나 우심방 경계부를 기준으로 비교한 결과 상대정맥과 우심방 모두 통계적으로 유의하여 환자의 기저질환이 없다면 카테터 위치는 세 그룹의 어떠한 위치에 고정하여도 무방하다고 사료된다. Purpose The purpose of this paper is how it effects on the central venous catheter tip position, and it brings other functions and complication problems. Also, to recognize connection between function evaluation and catheter position. In addition, to make out statistical signification along a suitable catheter tip position as well. Material & Method In this study, 490 the central venous catheterization patients whomprocedure at our hospital interventional room, and they were selected. In addition, this was studied from 1st of January 2009 to 31st of December 2009. We found out the position of catheter through chest X-ray after central venous catheterizationwas progressed by two departments of radiology residents. It was classified to other four groups which were the Superior Vena Cava(SVC), junction of the Superior Vena Cava and the Right Atrium(SVC-RA junction), Right atrium(RA), and the other group. Moreover, it was investigated a complication along a catheter position. The complications were compared by occurrence of the arrhythmia and a functional loss of the catheter. Result According to the results ofposition is group of the Superior Vena Cava (SVC) 115 patients, the junction of the Superior Vena Cava and Right Atrium (SVC-RA junction) 177 patients, Right Atrium(RA) 188 patients and the other 10 patients. There were a few statistical sample medical charges, and other group became an exception. The arrhythmia occurrence rate the Superior Vena Cava are 1.33(p=1.000) lower than junction of RA, which are 0.538(p=0.687) times higherjunction of Right atrium.However, in functional evaluate of catheter, rate of the Superior Vena Cava functionalis 0.640(p=0.523) times higher than junctionsRight Atrium that is 0.361(p=0.059) times higher. Conclusion Many of the studies recommend position of catheter tip during the central catheter insertion, but as a result, having compared by focus on junctions of the Superior Vena Cava and the Right Atrium. Also, statistical signification of the Superior Vena Cava and the Right Atrium. Finally, if patients doesn't have basal disease, it will be fine to fix any positions.

      • 중학생의 진화 개념 이해 향상을 위한 논변 프로그램 개발

        본 연구는 중학교 학생들의 진화개념 향상을 위한 논변활동 프로그램을 개발하고, 진화개념 검사와 논변활동 글쓰기, 담화를 분석하여 그 효과를 확인한 것이다. 이를 위해 선행연구와 교육 과정을 분석하여 진화 핵심 개념을 ‘변이’, ‘변이의 유전’, ‘경쟁’, ‘차등적 생존’, ‘종분화’의 5가지 하위 개념으로 선정했다. ADI 모형을 수정하여 진화프로그램 안내, 사전 온라인 글쓰기, 소집단 논변활동, 소집단 간 논변활동, 개인별 논변정리, 교수자 내용정리 단계를 적용했다. I 광역시 소재 중학생 194명 중 110명은 논변활동 프로그램을 적용하고 84명은 강의식 진화수업으로 진행하였다. 프로그램 실시 전 번역된 AAAS 진화개념 사전검사를, 프로그램 후 사후검사를 실시하여 결과를 비교하였다. 연구 결과 논변프로그램에 참여한 중학생의 진화개념이 향상되었다. 이 연구를 통해 중학교 과학시간에 활용될 수 있는 진화 논변프로그램이 개발 되었으므로 중학교 과학 진화 수업에 활용할 수 있게 되었다. The purpose of this study was to develop a program for improving the concept of evolution in middle school students and to examine the effects of the evolutionary concept test. To do this, we analyzed the preliminary research and curriculum and selected the core concepts of evolution as the five sub-concepts of 'mutation', 'inheritance of mutation', 'competition', 'differential survival', and 'species differentiation'. The ADI (Argument-Driven Inquiry) model was revised to apply the evolving program guide, dictionary online writing, small group discussion activity, small group discussion activity, individual discussion, and instructor contents. Subjects of the research were 194 middle school students in metropolitan area near Seoul in Korea. 110 were applied to the program as a experimental group, and 84 were progressed to the lecture evolution class as a control. We compared the results of students’ conceptions about evolution pre- and post-test. As a result of the study, the conceptions of evolution of middle school students who participated in the argumentative program was improved. This study has developed an evolutionary argumentative program that can be used in middle school science class hours, so it can be used in middle school science evolution class.

        “서로의 용기”로서의 몸들: 2010년대의 페미니스트 라틴 팝

        This study deals with Latin American feminist pop music from the 2010s. Global pop music has been increasingly reflecting the strong feminist trend of recent years. However, Latin American pop has developed its own feminist aspects and features, within the particular social and political conditions of the continent. Latin American gender problems are different from those of the United States or Europeans on an important side: the former include higher statics of physical violence and femicide. Therefore, feminist Latin pop also comes to represent its reality, always with the will to overcome gender violence and protect each other in solidarity. Seven songs have been chosen to analyze with their official music videos, all of which show such common aspects within the individualities of their creators. In each musical and performative creation, the images of diverse female bodies that deviate from the ideal that is usually required in the media play an important role. Those bodies, too ordinary or simply queer, proudly display themselves as free subjects and face with courage heterosexual objectifying stares.

        경남지역 일부 남자대학생의 문제음주에 영향을 미치는 요인

        This study investigated the factors affecting problematic drinking amongst the male university students of the Changwon area (n=367). The participants were divided into 3 groups, and undertook the self-report questionnaire survey. Based on the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) guidelines, problematic drinking were rated as ‘no problem’ (28.8%), ‘at-risk drinking’ (41.7%), and ‘alcohol abuse’ (29.5%). Our study revealed that students living alone, indulged in more club activities, and drank more than 3 cans of carbonated drinks a day; this was significantly high on the AUDIT score (p<0.05). Participation in education was significantly higher (p<0.05), but intention to reduce the monthly alcohol consumption was significantly lower (p<0.001) in the alcohol abuse group. Recognition level of drinking cultures, drinking habits, AUDIT, and nicotine dependence were significantly higher in the alcohol abuse group (p<0.001). Recognition level of drinking cultures and nicotine dependence by the FTND (Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence) positively correlated with problematic drinking, whereas dietary guidelines and self-esteem showed a negative correlation with problematic drinking (p<0.05). Based on the results of multiple linear regression analysis, the factors affecting problematic drinking were recognition level of drinking cultures (β=0.47, p<0.001) and nicotine dependence (β=0.23, p<0.001). We conclude that implementation of health education for university students, would aid in rectifying the incorrect perception of drinking. Furthermore, both drinking and smoking should be considered simultaneously.
