        Validation of Combs prognostic scoring system in Indian recurrent glioma patients treated with re-radiation

        Purpose: Retrospective audit of recurrent glioma patients treated by different fractionation schedules and to validate the modified Combs prognostic score in Indian patient cohort. Materials and Methods: Between Jan 2009 and June 2022, 66 recurrent gliomas patients treated with standard adjuvant treatment—radiation (RT) ± temozolomide (chemotherapy)—and re-treated with RT (± chemotherapy) were categorized as per modified Combs prognostic criteria and outcomes were compared. Results: Sixty-six patients with recurrent gliomas who received reirradiation (re-RT) were audited—53% males; 61% Karnofsky performance status (KPS) ≥80 at time of re-RT; median age 41.5 years (range, 6 to 70 years); 67% <50 years; primary histology low-grade glioma in 33% ; grade III 27%, grade IV 40%; initial median dose of 60 Gy equivalent dose in 2 Gy fractions (EQD2); maximum safe resection at recurrence 41%; mean and median follow-up 78 ± 51 months and 66 months. Mean time interval between RT was 46.4 ± 39 months. Mean planning target volume (PTV) volume in conventional RT (Conv-RT), hypofractionated RT (Hypo-RT), and ultra-hypofractionated RT (UF-RT) was 226.1 ± 140.7 mL, 162.8 ± 123.3 mL, and 143.3 ± 145.8 mL. Mean dose for Conv-RT, Hypo-RT, and UF-RT was 50 Gy (range, 40 to 60), 31 Gy (range, 20 to 40), and 20 Gy (range, 10 to 30). Mean overall survival (OS) in Conv-RT, Hypo-RT, and UF-RT cohort was 18.8 months (range, 2.4 to 76.8); 6.6 months (range, 2 to 17.4), and 13.9 months (range, 3 to 131.9). Median OS as per Combs criteria were 16.6 months (Group a), 24.6 months (Group b), 4.6 months (Group c), and 3 months (Group d). Significant survival benefit was with good KPS score (KPS >80 vs. <80; 20.46 vs. 5.25 months; p < 0.001), patients receiving salvage chemotherapy (20.46 vs. 6.96 months; p = 0.001), and patients received re-RT biological equivalent dose (BED3) >80 Gy (16.62 vs. 5.48 months; p = 0.03). Median overall survival (OS) in our patient cohort and Combs cohort in Group a was 16.6 and 19.5 months; Group b was 24.6 and 11.3 months; Group c was 4.7 and 8.1 months, and Group d was 2 and 5.5 months, respectively. Six months survival in our patient cohort and Combs cohort in Groups a, b, c, d were 100%, 92%, 34%, 17% and 94%, 79%, 70%, 41%, respectively. Twelve months survival in our patient cohort and Combs cohort in Groups a, b, c, d were 88%, 74%, 22%, 0% and 88%, 47%, 22%, 7%, respectively. Conclusion: Modified Combs prognostic factors predicts OS and is applicable in Indian subcontinent patient population.

      • Evidence of Multimeric Forms of HSP70 with Phosphorylation on Serine and Tyrosine Residues - Implications for Roles of HSP70 in Detection of GI Cancers

        Background: Heat-shock protein70 (HSP70) are intracellular protein chaperones, with emerging evidence of their association with various diseases. We have previously reported significantly elevated plasma-HSP70 (pHSP70) in pancreatic cancer. Current methods of pHSP70 isolation are ELISA-based which lack specificity due to cross-reactivity by similarities in the amino-acid sequence in regions of the protein backbone resulting in overestimated HSP70 value. Materials and Methods: This study was undertaken to develop a methodology to capture all isoforms of pHSP70, while further defining their tyrosine and serine phosphorylation status. Results: The methodology included gel electrophoresis on centrifuged supernatant obtained from plasma incubated with HSP70 antibody-coupled beads. After blocking non-specific binding sites, blots were immunostained with monoclonal-antibody specific for human-HSP70, phosphoserine and phosphotyrosine. Conclusions: Our novel immunocapture approach has distinct advantages over the commercially available methods of pHSP70 quantification by allowing isolation of molecular aggregates of HSP70 with additional ability to precisely distinguish phosphorylation state of HSP70 molecules at serine and tyrosine residues.

      • Critical dynamics of nonconserved N-vector models with anisotropic nonequilibrium perturbations.

        <P>We study dynamic field theories for nonconserving N-vector models that are subject to spatial-anisotropic bias perturbations. We first investigate the conditions under which these field theories can have a single length scale. When N=2 or N수?, it turns out that there are no such field theories and, hence, the corresponding models are pushed by the bias into the Ising class. We further construct nontrivial field theories for the N=3 case with certain bias perturbations and analyze the renormalization-group flow equations. We find that the three-component systems can exhibit rich critical behavior belonging to two different universality classes.</P>

        Effect of Supplementation of Rice Straw with Leucaena leucocephala and Prosopis cineraria Leaves on Nutrient Utilization by Goats

        The potential of Leucaena leucocephala and Prosopis cineraria leaves as nitrogen supplements ($16g/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$) to improve the utilization of a basal diet of rice straw by goats was assessed in a feeding trial. Rice straw supplementation with forage oats (Avena sativa) was fed as a control diet. DMI, $g/kgW^{0.75}$ of rice straw by goats receiving Leucaena was significantly (p<0.05) higher followed by Prosopis and oat fodder. The supplementation of Leucaena improved the digestibility coefficient of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF nutrient density. Goats on Prosopis or oat fodder supplemented straw responded similarly in terms of nutrient utilization. The intake ($g/kgW^{0.75}$) of DCP, TDN and nitrogen balance of goats were significantly higher (p<0.05) when Leucaena was fed. It is suggested that the Leucaena may be a useful N-supplement in areas where livestock are fed poor quality crop residues.

        Nutritional Evaluation of Lentil (Lens culinaris) Straw and Urea Treated Wheat Straw in Goats and Lactating Buffaloes

        The nutritive value of lentil straw (Lens culinaris) relative to 4% urea treated wheat straw (w/w) was assessed in adult bucks and milking buffaloes on-station and on-farm, respectively. A digestion-cum-nitrogen balance experiment was conducted with three bucks (24.35 kg) fed ad libitum lentil straw (LS), urea treated wheat straw (UTS) and a 1:1 (w/w DM basis) mixture of LS and UTS (LS:UTS) in a 3$\times$3 Latin square design. Though daily dry matter intake (g kg $W^{0.75}$ or % LW) of bucks fed LS and UTS did not differ significantly, that of LS:UTS was significantly (p<0.05) low. Similarly, digestibility of nutrients (DM, OM and CP) and nitrogen balance (g/day) did not differ significantly for bucks given LS or UTS although a significant positive improvement was evident in these parameters for LS:UTS. The digestibility of fibre fractions (NDF and ADF) was significantly (p<0.05) lower in LS as compared to UTS or LS:UTS. Except for the significantly (p<0.05) lower intake of DCP (g kg$W^{0.75}$), the bucks fed LS had statistically similar nutrient intake as compared to UTS. Feeding of LS:UTS resulted in significantly higher nutrient (DCP, TDN) intake by bucks. The important blood-biochemical parameters (haemoglobin,packed cell volume, glucose, urea nitrogen, total protein) and activity of serum enzymes (alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase) did not differ significantly in goats irrespective of dietary treatment. In the onfarm study, eighteen multiparous milking buffaloes were randomly assigned into three equal groups to assess the relative effect of feeding untreated wheat straw (WS), UTS and LS:UTS ad libitum as basal feed with a supplement. The study continued for 3 months and revealed that daily dry matter intake and average milk production (liters/day) by buffaloes offered LS:UTS and UTS was statistically similar but it was significantly higher compare to WS. However, milk composition did not differ significantly among the dietary treatments. It may be concluded that the nutritive value of lentil straw appeared to be no different to UTS, however, a positive synergistic effect was evident by feeding a mixture of LS and UTS on performance of goats and lactating buffaloes.

      • Bi-Event Subtraction Technique at hadron colliders

        We propose the Bi-Event Subtraction Technique (BEST) as a method of modeling and subtracting large portions of the combinatoric background during reconstruction of particle decay chains at hadron colliders. The combinatoric background arises when it is impossible to know experimentally which observed particles come from the decay chain of interest. The background shape can be modeled by combining observed particles from different collision events and be subtracted away, greatly reducing the overall background. This idea has been demonstrated in various experiments in the past. We generalize it by showing how to apply BEST multiple times in a row to fully reconstruct a cascade decay. We show the power of BEST with two simulated examples of its application towards reconstruction of the top quark and a supersymmetric decay chain at the Large Hadron Collider.

        Systemic Fungicide Application for the Control of White Muscardine in Silkworm Rearing

        Among silkworm diseases, white muscardine is the most virulent and contagious disease caused by Beauveria bassiana and common during winter and rainy seasons. The disease is managed at present by practicing the silkworm body and rearing seat disinfection to prevent the spread of white muscardine during silkworm rearing as the available methods do not cure the silkworms against white muscardine. The use of systemic fungicide was suggested recently to control white muscardine. The present study investigated the practicability of application aspect of systemic fungicide as spray, It is observed that 3 times feeding of systemic fungicide through mulberry leaf, fed immediately after third, fourth moult and on $4^{th}$ day of final instar as most effective in suppressing the multiplication of the fungus in silkworm. Spraying of the systemic fungicide on mulberry in the rearing house, air-dried and feeding was suggested as suitable application method. Alternately the spraying of the systemic fungicide on mulberry in mulberry garden 6 hrs prior to feeding was also suggested as a method for the control of white muscardine in silkworm rearing.

      • Self-Supported Nickel Iron Layered Double Hydroxide-Nickel Selenide Electrocatalyst for Superior Water Splitting Activity

        <P>The design of efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalyst systems toward energy conversion is highly demanding for their practical use. Large scale electrolytic water splitting is considered as a promising strategy for clean and sustainable energy production. Herein, we report a self-supported NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)-NiSe electrocatalyst by stepwise surface-redox-etching of Ni foam (NF) through a hydrothermal process. The as-prepared NiFe LDH-NiSe/NF catalyst exhibits far better performance in alkaline water oxidation, proton reduction, and overall water splitting compared to NiSex/NF or NiFe LDH/NF. Only 240 mV overpotential is required to obtain a water oxidation current density of 100 mA cm(-2) , whereas the same for the hydrogen evolution reaction is 276 mV in 1.0 M KOH. The synergistic effect from NiSe and NiFe LDH leads to the evolution of a highly efficient catalyst system for water splitting by achieving 10 mA cm (-2) current density at only 1.53 V in a two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer. In addition, the designed electrode produces stable performance for a long time even at higher current density to demonstrate its robustness and prospective as a real-life energy conversion system.</P>

      • Control of a shimmy vibration in vehicle steering system using a magneto-rheological damper

        <P>Vehicle stability largely depends on the vibration of the steering system. A four degrees of freedom dynamic model of an automotive steering system with a magneto-rheological damper is presented in this study. Firstly, an equivalent mathematical model of the steering system is developed. The nonlinear equation of motion obtained from the dynamic model is then linearized around its equilibrium point to make it suitable for the design of an appropriate controller for vibration suppression. In this work, a new type of adaptive sliding mode controller is designed for control of the magneto-rheological damper and hence to control unwanted vibration. It is shown that the proposed control logic is very effective for settling steering motion near the equilibrium position. The shimmy vibrations of the wheels are reduced by a considerable amount and the steering system becomes stable. In addition, a comparative work is undertaken between the proposed controller and an ordinary sliding mode controller to demonstrate the advantage of the proposed methodology.</P>
