Effects of Forming Method on Mechanical Strength and Microstructure of SiC Candle Filters

Porous SiC candle filter were fabricated by ramming and extrusion process. To fabricate SiC candle filter, commercially available $85\;{\mu}m$ $\alpha$-SiC powder and $44\;{\mu}m$ mullite powder were used as the starting materials. The materials were sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ 2h in ambient pressure. The effect of forming methods on porosity, density, strength (flexural and compressive strength), and microstructure was investigated. The sintered SiC filter which was formed by ramming process has higher density and strength than extruded filter. Its maximum density and 3-point bending strength were ${\sim}2.00\;g/cm^3$ and 45 MPa, respectively.

A new black seed coat soybean cultivar, “Heugmi” was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2006. The goal to breed the black seed coat soybean is to develop the cultivar with high yield, lodging tolerance, resistant to disease such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV), and bacterial pustule and seed size. Heugmi was selected from the cross between Milyang 78, which was late maturing, susceptible to lodging and SMV and with large seed size and green cotyledon, and Milyang 68, which was middle maturing, resistant to lodging and SMV and with middle seed size and yellow cotyledon. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this cultivar were carried out from 2001 to 2006. It has determinate growth habit, purple flower, brown pubescence, black pod color, black seed coat, green cotyledon, spherical seed shape, oval leaf shape and middle seed size (24.8 grams per 100 seeds), and it was 2 days earlier in maturity than the check cultivar Cheongjakong. Heugmi was better in the seed quality of crude protein contents, sucrose and total sugar contents than the check cultivar. It also has been identified to have resistance to SMV which was the troublesome soybean diseases. The average yield of Heugmi was 2.53 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials carried out in seven locations of Korea from 2004 to 2006, which was 8 percent higher than the check cultivar Cheongjakong.

We report a rare synchronous presentation of primary lung cancer and adrenal pheochromocytoma. A 59-year-old woman was diagnosed with right upper lobe non-small cell lung carcinoma measuring 2.8 cm and a right adrenal gland mass measuring 3.5 cm, which displayed increased metabolic activity on $^{18}F$-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography. The adrenal lesion was revealed to be asymptomatic. The patient underwent right adrenalectomy and histological examination revealed a pheochromocytoma. Ten days later, right upper lobectomy was performed for lung cancer. This case indicates that incidental adrenal lesions found in cases of resectable primary lung cancer should be investigated.

A Simple Method for Identifying Mechanical Parameters Based on Integral Calculation

A method for the identification of mechanical parameters based on integral calculation is presented. Both the moment of inertia and the friction constant are identified by the method developed here, which is based on well-known mechanical differential equations. The mechanical system under test is excited according to a pre-determined low-frequency sinusoidal motion, minimizing the distortion, and increasing the accuracy of the results. The parameters are identified using integral calculation, increasing the robustness of the results against measurement noise. Experimental data are supported by simulation, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed technique. The performance improvements shown here are of use in the design of speed and position controllers and observers. Owing to its simplicity, this method can be readily applied to commercial inverter products.

Objective: The aim of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the effects of the secondary task during simulated driving using the variable indicating control of vehicle. Background: There are so many researches for simulated driving and performance. For instance, some researches show that the effects of cell phone conversations on simulated driving. Cell phone conversations impaired explicit recognition memory. Method: Participants included 50s taxi drivers; 15 males and 15 females. All subjects were instructed to keep a distance (30m) from the car ahead and a constant speed (80km/hr or 100km/hr). Sending text message (STM) and Searching navigation (SN) were selected as the secondary task. Experiment consisted of rest for 3min., driving alone for 1min. and driving with secondary task for 1 min.. We were analyzed anterior-posterior coefficient of variation (APCV) and medial-lateral coefficient of variation (MLCV). Results: APCV was increased by 175.4% in STM and 223.8% in SN at 80km/hr. MLCV was increased by 242.3% in STM and 323.4% in SN at 100km/hr. There was no significant difference between genders. Conclusion: Consequently, performing secondary task during driving impaired the control of vehicle.
