Vol.13 No.1

Abstract The container shipping industry has faced new business environment over the last decades. With the globalization of business, the diversification of shippers' demand, and the introduction of e-business container shipping operators have to diversify their business and provide value added logistics services in order to gain a competitive advantage in the changing business environment. In particular, major container shipping companies provide not only maritime transport services but also logistics services to offer their customers a high level of integrated transport services. Thus, this paper aims to examine logistics services and a business strategy of major container shipping companies through a case study. It was found in this research that major container shipping companies utilize a different logistics service strategy. In order to strengthen their logistics business they established international logistics networks by operating exclusive container terminals and logistics centers in major regions worldwide. Also, they involve in IT business and provide on-line services to offer a high level of logistics services to their customers. Additionally they provide value added logistics services such as warehousing, customs clearance, packing, processing, documentation, inventory control, and freight forwarding by acquiring 3PL companies or in co-operation with them.

A Conceptual Framework of Port Cooperation

Ryoo, Dong-Keun Korean Institute of Navigation and Port Research Vol.35 No.7

Globalization of production, changing technology in ocean shipping sector, shifting bargaining power from port service provider to port users, changing distribution patterns of the containerization and new implementation for the environment and safety concerns introduced new ways of administration in port sector. In these days, port industries cannot survive alone. Port operation and management has to be proactive to cooperate and integrate with other port operators or other industries. In the 21st century, cooperation in maritime sector is more common than that in the past with several different reasons in a mixture of forms of cooperation. Cooperation among port authorities, port operators, shipping line, inland transport service providers and/or related organizations themselves becomes to exist to overcome the challenges and development of the global transport chain. This paper investigates the concept of port cooperation and the case analysis of the cooperation in the port industry.

Efficiency Measurement of Major Container Terminals in Asia

Ryoo, Dong-Keun,Yu, Song-Jin,Sharma, M.J. Korean Institute of Navigation and Port Research Vol.30 No.4

Due to the growth of container traffic and port competition, ports have increasingly been under pressure to improve their efficiency in port operation and port management for competitive edge. The purpose of this study is to compare the technical efficiency among major container terminals in China, Korea and Singapore using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This paper analyses the returns-to-scale using the output orientation of VRS and CRS model. The benefits of this study examining the relative performance of container terminals will enable container terminal operating companies or port policy makers in those countries to identify current slacks and to set up a proper port management and operation plan to improve their productivity.

Globalization and Consolidation in Maritime Transport and Its Implications for Container Port Business

Vol.29 No.9

The world of container shipping and container terminal business is changing and container ports need to know what the changes are in order to plan how to respond. In particular, the container transport industry has noticed two major developments such as globalization and consolidation. The purpose of this paper is to review the current trend towards globalization and consolidation of container liner shipping and container terminal business. It also investigates the impact of these market developments on container ports and presents its implications for port development, management and operation, and port competition policy. According to the discussion of this paper a greater exercise of market power of container terminal operators will have negative impacts on international trade and national economy, especially port users, including container lines, exporters and importers. An empirical evidence on the exercise of market power is required to develop competition rules on market dominance at a national and international level. This paper suggests “port coopetition” as a solution for smaller and regional container terminal operators to survive in a competitive business environment.

The Effects of Maritime E-Commerce on Transaction Structure in the Chartering Market

Vol.36 No.-

In recent years the shipping industry has witnessed the development of maritime electronic commerce. The electronic marketplaces in the chartering business created by the Internet provide new challenges, threats, and opportunities to everyone who chooses to embrace them. Also, the development of online chartering implies that there will be significant changes in transaction structure in chartering, particularly in the role of shipbrokers. This paper has applied Four Outcome Framework based on transaction cost theory to analyse the effects of maritime e-commerce on chartering transaction structure. Applying the theoretical framework to the chartering market, four generic Scenarios have been developed. The Scenario analysis shows that offline shipbrokers will play an important role in chartering even after the advent of maritime e-commerce.
