After 20 years of steady increase, kiwifruit industry faced a severe arrest due to the pandemic spread of the bacterial canker, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). The bacterium penetrates the host plant primarily via natural openings or wounds, and its spread is mainly mediated by atmospheric events and cultural activities. Since the role of sucking insects as vectors of bacterial pathogens is widely documented, we investigated the ability of Metcalfa pruinosa Say (1830), one of the most common kiwifruit pests, to transmit Psa to healthy plants in laboratory conditions. Psa could be isolated both from insects feeding over experimentally inoculated plants, and from insects captured in Psa-infected orchards. Furthermore, insects were able to transmit Psa from experimentally inoculated plants to healthy ones. In conclusion, the control of M. pruinosa is recommended in the framework of protection strategies against Psa.

Magnetic Relaxation Mechanisms in Ho Single Atom Magnets

Surface-supported single atoms with long magnetic lifetime, also called single atom magnets, represent the ultimate limit of downscaling of a magnetic bit. Due to the possibility to write, store and read information in their magnetic states, these atoms are model systems for future ultra-high-density magnetic storage devices. In this review, the properties of the most investigated single atom magnet, namely a Ho atom adsorbed on an ultrathin MgO film, will be presented together with the techniques used to address its quantum level structure and magnetic stability. The temperature and field dependent relaxation mechanisms of this unconventional magnetic system will be discussed based on recent findings. Finally, an overview of the open issues and possible future directions of the research will be provided.

This paper compares and describes the tidal volume (Vt) used in mechanically ventilated dogs under a range of clinical conditions. Twenty-eight dogs requiring mechanical ventilation (MV) were classified into 3 groups: healthy dogs mechanically ventilated during surgery (group I, n = 10), dogs requiring MV due to extra-pulmonary reasons (group II, n = 7), and dogs that required MV due to pulmonary pathologies (group III, n = 11). The median Vt used in each group was 16 mL/kg (interquartile range [IQR], 15.14–21) for group I, 12.59 mL/kg (IQR, 9–14.25) for group II, and 12.59 mL/kg (IQR, 10.15–14.96) for group III. The Vt used wassignificantly lower in group III than in group I (p = 0.016). The thoraco-pulmonary compliance was significantly higher in group I than in groups II and III (p = 0.011 and p = 0.006, respectively). The median driving pressure was similar among the groups with a median of 9, 11, and 10 cmH2O in groups I, II, and III, respectively (p = 0.260). Critically-ill dogs requiring MV due to the primary pulmonary pathology received a significantly lower Vt than healthy dogs but with a range of values that were markedly higher than those recommended by human guidelines.

This work investigated issues for an efficient and reliable embedding and use of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)sensors for strain monitoring of composite structures with particular regard to the manufacturing processof components in the nautical field by means of the vacuum bag technique in autoclave. CFRP materiallaminates with embedded FBGs were produced and the effect of the curing process parameters on the lighttransmission characteristics of the optical fibers was initially investigated. Two different types of coating,namely polyimide and acrylate, were tested by measuring the light attenuation by an Optical Time DomainReflectometer. Tensile specimens were subsequently extracted from the laminas and instrumented also with asurface-mounted conventional electrical strain gage (SG). Comparison between the FBG and SG measurementsduring static tensile tests allowed the evaluation of the strain monitoring capability of the FBGs, inparticular of their sensitivity (i.e., gage factor) when embedded.

Ribociclib is a selective cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6 inhibitor that has been approved in combination with endocrine therapy for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive/human epidermal growth factor 2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer. The main dermatological adverse events associated with CDK 4/6 inhibitors that are described in the literature include skin rash, an increased risk of alopecia, and stomatitis. Erythema dyschromicum perstans (EDP), also known as ashy dermatosis, is characterized by acquired small and large slate-gray hyperpigmented macules with erythematous borders. There are currently no published reports of EDP-like or pigmentary changes induced by CDK 4/6 inhibitors. This report describes the first case of EDP-like pigmentation associated with ribociclib therapy.
4f occupancy and magnetism of rare-earth atoms adsorbed on metal substrates

<P>We report x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements as well as multiplet calculations for Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm atoms adsorbed on Pt(111), Cu(111), Ag(100), and Ag(111). In the gas phase, all four elements are divalent and we label their 4f occupancy as 4f(n). Upon surface adsorption, and depending on the substrate, the atoms either remain in that state or become trivalent with 4f(n-1) configuration. The trivalent state is realized when the sum of the atomic correction energies (4f -> 5d promotion energy E-fd + intershell coupling energy delta E-c) is low and the surface binding energy is large. The latter correlates with a high substrate density of states at the Fermi level. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy of trivalent RE atoms is larger than the one of divalent RE atoms. We ascribe this to the significantly smaller covalent radius of the trivalent state compared to the divalent one for a given RE element. For a given valency of the RE atom, the anisotropy is determined by the overlap between the spd states of the RE and the d states of the surface. For all investigated systems, the magnetization curves recorded at 2.5 K show absence of hysteresis indicating that magnetic relaxation is faster than about 10 s.</P>
