Professional Development for Teachers of Mathematics

        ( Donaldson John D. ) 한국수학교육학회 2003 수학교육연구 Vol.7 No.3

At a time when mathematics is becoming more important in our everyday lives and more relevant in applications in industry and the emerging technologies, there are signs of a decrease in numbers of students and their interest in the subject. Teachers must be encouraged to take a new approach to generating enthusiasm amongst students by showing them that mathematics is an integral part of the future. To achieve this, opportunities for renewal of teachers` knowledge and updating of skills should be made available. In this paper, emphasis is placed on mathematics in the real world and how it can be used to develop the more general skills such as self-teaching and communication which are an essential part of preparation for entry into higher education or the workplace.

      • Understanding United States Appreciation of Tea Drinking

( Babette Donaldson ) 원광대학교 한국예다학연구소 2017 한국예다학 Vol.4 No.-

The extraordinary global history of tea provides a lens through which we can better understand the entire world`s cultural differences and, more importantly, the traditions and values that are similar. The worldwide culture of tea exemplifies the foundations of civilized human society. While Western Europe and the United States share political, economic and tea history that are entertained and similar, there are some subtle and surprising differences. British author, George Orwell, said in his book, Smothered Under Journalism that, “Tea is one of the main stays of civilization in this country.” Quite the opposite is true in the United States. In fact, most Americans are completely unaware of their own rich tea history and habits and generally think of their beverage identity as a coffee culture. There is often an assumption that all Western tea habits originated with the British and other Western practices were then imitations. This is not true. There is a shared history of tea being imported to both continents at approximately the same time by the same traders. The Dutch East India Company had a monopoly on the spice trade from Asia. This included tea and many other exotic trade items. It was their limited understanding of tea customs and their marketing to the rest of the world that informed the way the West embraced the new tea and the way it was used. This was during the mid-1600`s which also marked the end of the Chinese Ming Dynasty and the transition to the Qing Dynasty. Some of the differences in the development of Western traditions can be attributed to the personalities of those who were drawn to adventure in the New Land of North America in contrast to the Europeans who remained at home. There was the allure of freedom, power and wealth and the challenges of settling a wilderness. There were complex issues relating to the indigenous tribal residents. These early European immigrants certainly felt a strong desire to break with old social rules and restrictions and confidence in their strength to overcome adverse conditions. We cannot explore the differences between these two Western tea cultures by the choice of tea or style of equipage or brewing methods as we might study the differences between East and West. Instead, we must first consider the different nature of the people settled the New Land in contrast to those who remained in their homeland. One striking similarity is how tea drinking symbolically expresses polite behavior, elegance and sophistication. All Westerners associate tea with conversation and relaxation - taking a break from the rigors of daily life. We see this in the paintings and in the literature of both continents. So, it is interesting that tea has also been the trigger of rebellion and economic conflict on several occasions. We can say that Camellia sinensis has divided nations as much as it has brought them together.

The effects of high-fat diets composed of different animal and vegetable fat sources on the health status and tissue lipid profiles of male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

        Janine Donaldson,Michael Taurai Madziva,Kennedy Honey Erlwanger 아세아·태평양축산학회 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.5

Objective: The current study aimed to investigate the impact of high-fat diets composed of different animal and vegetable fat sources on serum metabolic health markers in Japanese quail, as well as the overall lipid content and fatty acid profiles of the edible bird tissues following significantly increased dietary lipid supplementation. Methods: Fifty seven male quail were divided into six groups and fed either a standard diet or a diet enriched with one of five different fats (22% coconut oil, lard, palm oil, soybean oil, or sunflower oil) for 12 weeks. The birds were subjected to an oral glucose tolerance test following the feeding period, after which they were euthanized and blood, liver, breast, and thigh muscle samples collected. Total fat content and fatty acid profiles of the tissue samples, as well as serum uric acid, triglyceride, cholesterol, total protein, albumin, aspartate transaminase, and total bilirubin concentrations were assessed. Results: High-fat diet feeding had no significant effects on the glucose tolerance of the birds. Dietary fatty acid profiles of the added fats were reflected in the lipid profiles of both the liver and breast and thigh muscle tissues, indicating successful transfer of dietary fatty acids to the edible bird tissues. The significantly increased level of lipid inclusion in the diets of the quail used in the present study was unsuccessful in increasing the overall lipid content of the edible bird tissues. Serum metabolic health markers in birds on the high-fat diets were not significantly different from those observed in birds on the standard diet. Conclusion: Thus, despite the various high-fat diets modifying the fatty acid profile of the birds’ tissues, unlike in most mammals, the birds maintained a normal health status following consumption of the various high-fat diets.

      • Session 3: Japan-Korea Session : Shimer Meets the Production Based Asset Pricing Crowd: Labor Search and Asset Returns

        ( John B Donaldson ),( Hyung Seok Eric Kim ) 한국국제경제학회 2014 한국국제경제학회 동계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Beginning with Shimer (2005) and Hall (2005), business cycle theory has explored the role of wage rigidity in accounting for the statistcal characteristics of key labor market cariables over the business cycle; in particular, high vacancy and unemployment volatility and a high negative corre-lation between the two. As a further exploration, we extend the Mortensen-Pissarides structure of period-byperiod Nash wage bargaining to an environment where there is labor force heterogeneity (permanently employed "insiders" and "outsiders" subject to separations) and limited participation in the financial asset markets. We show that a reasonable calibration of the resulting model sat-isfactorily accounts not only for aggregate fluctuations in unemployment and vacancies and their cross-correlations but also for the observed wedge between variations at the intensive margin (hoursper worker) and at the extensive margin (total hours). The model also achieves a satisfactory repli-cation of the major financial return phenomena; namely.a low risk-free rate, a high equity premium, and an upward sloping term structure. The key to these results is the variable income insurance effectively provided by shareholders and given to workers arising from the interaction of Nash wage bargaining superimposed on the incomplete financial market structure. We refer to the variable income insurance as (income) distribution risk.

Limestone’s performance as a solid adsorbent for HF and HCl generated in refrigerant destruction applications

Tekai Akuetteh,Adam Andrew Donaldson 한국화학공학회 2014 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.31 No.10

The viability of two solid adsorbents, limestone and cement powder, for use in a flow-through packed-bedcolumn for HCl and HF gas neutralization following refrigerant destruction was studied. Neutralization tests performedat 408 K using 5% HCl in N2 and 5% HF in N2, showed that limestone had a significantly higher adsorption capacityfor both HF and HCl. ~49% of fed HCl, and between 7.8%-16.2% of fed HF gases were adsorbed by 7 g of limestonefor a gas flow rate of 6.67×10−6m3/s (STP) over 30 to 180 minutes. Effective diffusivities (De) of HCl and HF intothe limestone particles were 1.5×10−9and 2.2×10−9m2/s, respectively, indicating that a solid diffusion mechanism dom-inance would limit the suitability of this method as a solid adsorbent in the tested form. Under these conditions, com-plete particle conversion times were 227 hours for HCl-limestone and 154 hours for HF-limestone. Considering thelong conversion times observed, shorter conversion times would require micron-scale particle sizes, suitable for entrainedflow but not for a packed-bed arrangement. A Na2CO3/Limestone slurry used to neutralize the reactor effluent provedefficient within this system, and may be a more suitable alternative for acid neutralization involving HF.
