Towards defi ning a simplifi ed procedure for COTS system-on-chip TID testing

        Stefano Di Mascio,Alessandra Menicucci,Gianluca Furano,Tomasz Szewczyk,Luigi Campajola,Francesco Di Capua,Andrea Lucaroni,Marco Ottavi 한국원자력학회 2018 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.50 No.8

The use of System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions in the design of on-board data handling systems is animportant step towards further miniaturization in space. However, the Total Ionizing Dose (TID) andSingle Event Effects (SEE) characterization of these complex devices present new challenges that areeither not fully addressed by current testing guidelines or may result in expensive, cumbersome testconfigurations. In this paper we report the test setups, procedures and results for TID testing of a SoCmicrocontroller both using standard 60Co and low-energy protons beams. This paper specifically pointsout the differences in the test methodology and in the challenges between TID testing with proton beamand with the conventional gamma ray irradiation. New test setup and procedures are proposed whichare capable of emulating typical mission conditions (clock, bias, software, reprogramming, etc.) whilekeeping the test setup as simple as possible at the same time.

Surgical Management of Rhinosinusitis in Onco-Hematological Patients

        Stefano Di Girolamo,Sara Mazzone,Roberta Di Mauro,Piergiorgio Giacomini,Maria Cantonetti 대한이비인후과학회 2014 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.7 No.4

Objectives. In onco-hematological diseases, the incidence of paranasal sinuses infection dramatically increase and requires a combination of medical and surgical therapy. Balloon dilatation surgery (DS) is a minimally invasive, tissue preserv- ing procedure. The study evaluates the results of DS for rhinosinusitis in immunocompromised patients. Methods. A retrospective chart review was conducted in 110 hematologic patients with rhinosinusitis. Twenty-five patients were treated with DS technique and 85 patients with endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). We considered the type of an- esthesia and the extent of intra- and postoperative bleeding. Patients underwent Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-20) to evaluate changes in subjective symptoms and global patient assessment (GPA) questionnaire to value patient satis- faction. Results. Local anesthesia was employed in 8 cases of DS and in 15 of ESS. In 50 ESS patients, an anterior nasal packing was placed and in 12 cases a repacking was necessary. In the DS group, nasal packing was required in 8 cases and in 2 cases a repacking was placed (P=0.019 and P=0.422, respectively). The SNOT-20 change score showed significant improvement of health status in both groups. However the DS group showed a major improvement in 3 voices: need to blow nose, runny nose, and facial pain/pressure. The 3-month follow-up GPA questionnaire showed an higher sat- isfaction of DS group. Conclusion. Balloon DS represents a potentially low aggressive treatment and appears to be relatively safe and effective in onco-hematologic patients. All these remarks may lead the surgeon to consider a larger number of candidates for sur- gical procedure.

A torque-measuring micromotor provides operator independent measurements marking four different density areas in maxillae

Di Stefano, Danilo Alessio,Arosio, Paolo,Piattelli, Adriano,Perrotti, Vittoria,Iezzi, Giovanna The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2015 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.7 No.1

PURPOSE. Bone density at implant placement site is a key factor to obtain the primary stability of the fixture, which, in turn, is a prognostic factor for osseointegration and long-term success of an implant supported rehabilitation. Recently, an implant motor with a bone density measurement probe has been introduced. The aim of the present study was to test the objectiveness of the bone densities registered by the implant motor regardless of the operator performing them. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 3704 bone density measurements, performed by means of the implant motor, were registered by 39 operators at different implant sites during routine activity. Bone density measurements were grouped according to their distribution across the jaws. Specifically, four different areas were distinguished: a pre-antral (between teeth from first right maxillary premolar to first left maxillary premolar) and a sub-antral (more distally) zone in the maxilla, and an interforaminal (between and including teeth from first left mandibular premolar to first right mandibular premolar) and a retroforaminal (more distally) zone in the lower one. A statistical comparison was performed to check the inter-operators variability of the collected data. RESULTS. The device produced consistent and operator-independent bone density values at each tooth position, showing a reliable bone-density measurement. CONCLUSION. The implant motor demonstrated to be a helpful tool to properly plan implant placement and loading irrespective of the operator using it.

Changes in Speech Range Profile Are Associated with Cognitive Impairment

        De Stefano Alessandro,Di Giovanni Pamela,Kulamarva Gautham,Di Fonzo Francesca,Massaro Tommaso,Contini Agnese,Dispenza Francesco,Cazzato Claudio 대한치매학회 2021 Dementia and Neurocognitive Disorders Vol.20 No.4

Background and Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the variations in the speech range profile (SRP) of patients affected by cognitive decline. Methods: We collected the data of patients managed for suspected voice and speech disorders, and suspected cognitive impairment. Patients underwent an Ear Nose and Throat evaluation and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). To obtain SRP, we asked the patients to read 18 sentences twice, at their most comfortable pitch and loudness as they would do in daily conversation, and recorded their voice on to computer software. Results: The study included 61 patients. The relationship between the MMSE score and SRP parameters was established. Increased severity of the MMSE score resulted in a statistically significant reduction in the average values of the semitones to the phonetogram, and the medium and maximum sound pressure levels (p<0.001). The maximum predictivity of MMSE was based on the highly significant values of semitones (p<0.001) and the maximum sound pressure levels (p=0.010). Conclusions: The differences in SRP between the various groups were analyzed. Specifically, the SRP value decreased with increasing severity of cognitive decline. SRP was useful in highlighting the relationship between all cognitive declines tested and speech.

A Shellfish on the Path of Truth: Funny Images and the Modulation of Pleasure and Pain

Martina Di Stefano 한국서양고전학회 2021 西洋古典學硏究 Vol.60 No.3

Until recent times, Plato’s depreciation of images has led to neglect how they feature in his texts. An interest towards the arguments against images have prevailed over noticing and assessing their actual use in his dialogues. In fact, Socrates is said to be a master in drawing images and Platonic dialogues show a great awareness of how images creep in our understanding. A positive assessment of the role of images in Plato’s texts has therefore started to spread and their use has been epistemologically justified by underlying how images are one of the steps towards truth and by connecting this ‘necessary’ but imperfect means to the finitude of human beings. Moreover, some passages have led to construe the whole Platonic fiction as a sort of image, aimed at enacting and making listeners/readers reenacting Socratic philosophein. Indeed, in the Phaedrus written texts are compared to eidōla (images) of the living discussions and the Symposium likens Sokratikoi logoi to images of excellence. This general interest for Platonic images and theory of images has therefore seen an increasing number of analyses flourish, focusing originally on their consistent and subtle use. This challenging view has, however, ignored a fundamental aspect of Plato’s use of images in his dialogues, the role of funny and laughable images. In this paper, I shall try to show how the use of funny images fits in both Plato’s theory and dialogical fiction. For this purpose, I will firstly address the structure of the emotional response to laughable images, i.e. ridicule. A mixture of pleasure and pain, ridicule proves to be equally powerful and dangerous, and it is allowed only under specific conditions. I will then investigate how both the pleasant and painful strands explain the presence of funny images in Platonic texts. Following the idea that Plato’s dialogues are images of the philosophical practice, I will consider both verbal eikones aiming at ridiculing doctrines or individuals, lowering the register, and eliciting laughter, and laughable representations of negative characters. To fully understand how and why Plato’s logoi dwells on funny images, I argue that it is necessary to find an internal and compelling reason for which he had recourse to them, which is strongly entwined with desire, good imitation, and philosophical persuasion. I will show that funny images are extensively exploited by Plato because they act on two levels: they instill through pleasure the desire for a philosophical life and they help avoid identification with powerful and seductive negative characters, like Callicles or Thrasymachus, while discarding their doctrines. By doing so, this pleasant experience contributes to associate pleasure to the playful representation of virtue; at the same time, through the representation of negative characters, pain is also correctly learnt.

The effect of undersizing and tapping on bone to implant contact and implant primary stability: A histomorphometric study on bovine ribs

        Danilo Alessio Di Stefano,Vittoria Perrotti,Gian Battista Greco,Claudia Cappucci,Paolo Arosio,Adriano Piattelli,Giovanna Iezzi 대한치과보철학회 2018 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.10 No.3

PURPOSE. Implant site preparation may be adjusted to achieve the maximum possible primary stability. The aim of this investigation was to study the relation among bone-to-implant contact at insertion, bone density, and implant primary stability intra-operatively measured by a torque-measuring implant motor, when implant sites were undersized or tapped. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Undersized (n=14), standard (n=13), and tapped (n=13) implant sites were prepared on 9 segments of bovine ribs. After measuring bone density using the implant motor, 40 implants were placed, and their primary stability assessed by measuring the integral of the torque-depth insertion curve. Bovine ribs were then processed histologically, the bone-toimplant contact measured and statistically correlated to bone density and the integral. RESULTS. Bone-toimplant contact and the integral of the torque-depth curve were significantly greater for undersized sites than tapped sites. Moreover, a correlation between bone to implant contact, the integral and bone density was found under all preparation conditions. The slope of the bone-to-implant/density and integral/density lines was significantly greater for undersized sites, while those corresponding to standard prepared and tapped sites did not differ significantly. CONCLUSION. The integral of the torque-depth curve provided reliable information about bone-to-implant contact and primary implant stability even in tapped or undersized sites. The linear relations found among the parameters suggests a connection between extent and modality of undersizing and the corresponding increase of the integral and, consequently, of primary stability. These results might help the physician determine the extent of undersizing needed to achieve the proper implant primary stability, according to the planned loading protocol.

A comparison between anorganic bone and collagen-preserving bone xenografts for alveolar ridge preservation: systematic review and future perspectives

Danilo Alessio Di Stefano,Francesco Orlando,Marco Ottobelli,Davide Fiori,Umberto Garagiola 대한악안면성형재건외과학회 2022 Maxillofacial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Vol.44 No.-

After tooth extraction, dimensional changes affect the alveolar socket, leading to loss in alveolar bone height and width. Histological modifications also occur, with initial formation of a blood clot that is replaced with granulation tissue and subsequently with a provisional connective tissue matrix. Spontaneous healing ends with socket filling with woven bone, which is gradually replaced with lamellar bone and bone marrow. Adequate alveolar ridge dimensions and bone quality are required to assure optimal stability and osseointegration following dental implant placement. When a tooth is extracted, alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) procedures are an effective method to prevent collapse of the post-extraction socket. Heterologous bone is widely chosen by clinicians for ARP, and anorganic bone xenografts (ABXs) made bioinert by heat treatment represents the most used biomaterial in clinical applications. Collagen-preserving bone xenografts (CBXs) made of porcine or equine bone are fabricated by less invasive chemical or enzymatic treatments to remove xenogenic antigens, and these are also effective in preserving post-extraction sites. Clinical differences between anorganic bone substitutes and collagen-preserving materials are not well documented in the literature but understanding these differences could clarify how processing protocols influence biomaterial behavior in situ. This systematic review of the literature compares the dimensional changes and histological features of ABXs versus CBXs in ridge preservation procedures to promote awareness of different bone xenograft efficacies in stimulating the healing of post-extraction sockets.

The socket shield technique and its complications, implant survival rate, and clinical outcomes: a systematic review

        Stefano Oliva,Mario Capogreco,Giovanna Murmura,Ettore Lupi,Di Carlo Mariachiara,Maurizio D’Amario 대한치주과학회 2023 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.53 No.2

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of the socket shield technique (SST), an innovative surgical method introduced in 2010, for reducing buccal bone plate resorption. Methods: The review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Clinical studies conducted in humans and investigating the SST were searched on PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar in November and December 2021. The implant survival rate, percentage of complications, and clinical parameters (marginal bone loss [MBL], pink esthetic score [PES], and buccal bone plate resorption [BBPR]) were analyzed using the collected data. Results: The initial search resulted in 132 articles. After article screening, the full texts of 19 studies were read and 17 articles were finally included in the review. In total, 656 implants were installed with the SST. Nine of the 656 implants experienced failure, resulting in an implant survival rate of 98.6%. The percentage of complications was about 3.81%. The analysis of clinical parameters (MBL, PES, and BBPR), showed favorable results for the SST. The mean MBL in implants placed with the SST was 0.39±0.28 mm versus 1.00±0.55 mm in those placed without the SST. PES had a better outcome in the SST group, with an average of 12.08±1.18 versus 10.77±0.74. BBPR had more favorable results in implants placed with the SST (0.32±0.10 mm) than in implants placed with the standard technique (1.05±0.18 mm). Conclusions: The SST could be considered beneficial for preserving the buccal bone plate. However, since only 7 of the included studies were long-term randomized controlled trials comparing the SST with the standard implant placement technique, the conclusions drawn from this systematic review should be interpreted with caution. • Dynamic response of a linear two d.o.f system visco-elastically coupled with a rigid block

        Di Egidio, Angelo,Pagliaro, Stefano,Fabrizio, Cristiano,de Leo, Andrea M. Techno-Press 2019 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.8 No.4

The present work investigates the use of a rigid rocking block as a tool to reduce vibrations in a frame structure. The study is based on a simplified model composed by a 2-DOF linear system, meant to represent a general M-DOF frame structure, coupled with a rocking rigid block through a linear visco-elastic device, which connects only the lower part of the 2-DOF system. The possibility to restrain the block directly to the ground, by means of a second visco-elastic device, is investigated as well. The dynamic response of the model under an harmonic base excitation is then analysed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the coupling in reducing the displacements and the drift of the 2-DOF system. The nonlinear equations of motion of the coupled assemblage 2-DOF-block are obtained by a Lagrangian approach and then numerically integrated considering some reference mechanical and geometrical quantities as variable parameters. It follows an extensive parametric analysis, whose results are summarized through behaviour maps, which portray the ratio between the maximum displacements and drifts of the system, with and without the coupling with the rigid block, for several combinations of system's parameters. When the ratio of the displacements is less than unity, the coupling is considered effective. Results show that the presence of the rocking rigid block improves the dynamics of the system in large ranges of the characterizing parameters.
