Seung-Joon Oh, In-Kyung Jeong, Young-Seol Kim, Young-Kil Choi, Jeong-Ryung Paeng¹, Jung-Hwan Bae and Hyun-Dae Shin²Department of internal Medicine, College Medicine, Endocrine Research Institute¹. Department of Rehabilitation, College of Oriental Medicine², Seoul, korea. Bady Fat Reduction Effects of Red Ginseng Compound Preparation on the Patients with Obesity. Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 244-254, 1999.-Obesity can be defined as a metabolic disease due to an increased state of fat tissues caused by an imbalance of calorie intake and use. Recently, in Korea by improvement and westernization of food intake, along with decrease in exercise activities, the prevalence of obesity has increased greatly. Our objectives were to study stability and effects of decrease in body fat by administering red ginseng compound preparation (known to have body fat decreasing effects in laboratory animals) to obesity patients on low calorie diets. Changes in weight and body fat were measured while carrying out calorie-restricted diets on patients for 4 weeks, then administering red ginseng compound preparation for another 4 weeks. The patients were 20 people whose BMI were 25kg/㎡ or over and whose percent body fat was also 30% or over when tested by bioelectrical conductivity. 1. Changes in weight were from 70.04kg(base line) to 67.43kg(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 2. In similar sense, BMI decreased from 27.12kg/㎡(base line) to 26.56kg/㎡(after dieting), and further to 26.01kg/㎡ (after taking red ginseng compound preparation). The BMI seemed to decrease significantly compared to the baseline after the use of red ginseng compound. 3. Waist hip ratio was changed from 0.8858(base line) to 0.8728, but it was statistically insignificant. 4. The percent body fat was 35,16%(base line), 33.87%(after dieting), and 31.68%(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 5. Complete blood cell count and blood chemisrty remained unaffected by the administration. 6. In concern to endocrinologic studies, T3 decreased from 118.7 to 98.2ng/dL, and T4 increased from 8.8 to 9.2㎕/ dL. Epinephrine showed a tendency to decreased from 0.27 to 0.25 ng/mL, and norepinephrine increased from 0.39 to 0.44ng/mL. 7. Leptin was not changed. 8. Some patients complained adverse effects; constipation(5 patients, may be due to diet therapy), fatigue (2 patients), pruritus(2 patients), flushing(s patients), dizziness(3 patients) and epigastric discomfort(2 patients). However their symptoms were mild, so medication did not stopped. In conclusion, loss of weight without significant side effects was observed during low calorie diet and red ginseng compound preparation administration. This is thought to be in relation to sympathetic nerve system rather than adrenal gland. Also, further long0term studies should be required, since the observed results were based on short-term changes in weight.

      • Primary network cognition with spatial diversity signature

        Dae-Young Seol,Tae-Won Yune,Gi-Hong Im IEEE 2009 IEEE COMMUNICATIONS LETTERS Vol.13 No.5

<P>The identification of primary networks improves efficiency in dynamic spectrum access. We propose a spatial diversity signature for the primary signal detection, which exploits the structure of space-time or space-frequency codeword based on Alamouti scheme. The signature pattern informs the secondary user which network transmits the primary signal and enables to maintain an experiential database for each primary network. The proposed scheme provides reliable detection and network identification performance over frequency-selective fading channels in low signal-to-noise ratio regimes, without sacrificing the data rate of primary system.</P>

Immunophenotypic markers in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia: the prognostic significance of CD20 and TdT expression

2015 Blood Research Vol.50 No.4

BackgroundEfforts to overcome poor outcomes in patients with adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have focused on combining new therapeutic agents targeting immunophenotypic markers (IPMs) with classical cytotoxic agents; therefore, it is important to evaluate the clinical significance of IPMs.MethodsBaseline characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients with adult ALL were retro-spectively analyzed. The percentage of blasts expressing IPMs at diagnosis was measured by multicolor flow cytometry analysis. Samples in which ≥20% of blasts expressed an IPM were considered positive.ResultsAmong the total patient population (N=230), almost all (92%) were in first or second hem-atological complete remission (HCR) and 54% received allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (allo-HCT). Five-year hematologic relapse-free survival (HRFS) and overall sur-vival (OS) rates were 36% and 39%, respectively, and 45.6% and 80.5% of patients were positive for the IPMs CD20 and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT), respectively. Expression of CD20, CD13, CD34, and TdT was associated with HRFS rate, and ex-pression of CD20 and CD13 was associated with OS rate, as was the performance of al-lo-HCT. In multivariate analysis, positivity for CD20 (HRFS: hazard ratio [HR], 2.21, P<0.001; OS: HR, 1.63, P=0.015) and negativity for TdT (HRFS: HR, 2.30, P=0.001) were both significantly associated with outcomes. When patients were categorized into three subgroups according to positivity for CD20 and TdT, there were significant differences in HRFS and OS among the subgroups.ConclusionPositivity for CD20 and TdT expression and clinical risk group were prognostic factors in adult ALL.

Improved Parameter Estimation with Threshold Adaptation of Cognitive Local Sensors

Seol, Dae-Young,Lim, Hyoung-Jin,Song, Moon-Gun,Im, Gi-Hong The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2012 Journal of communications and networks Vol.14 No.5

Reliable detection of primary user activity increases the opportunity to access temporarily unused bands and prevents harmful interference to the primary system. By extracting a global decision from local sensing results, cooperative sensing achieves high reliability against multipath fading. For the effective combining of sensing results, which is generalized by a likelihood ratio test, the fusion center should learn some parameters, such as the probabilities of primary transmission, false alarm, and detection at the local sensors. During the training period in supervised learning, the on/off log of primary transmission serves as the output label of decision statistics from the local sensor. In this paper, we extend unsupervised learning techniques with an expectation maximization algorithm for cooperative spectrum sensing, which does not require an external primary transmission log. Local sensors report binary hard decisions to the fusion center and adjust their operating points to enhance learning performance. Increasing the number of sensors, the joint-expectation step makes a confident classification on the primary transmission as in the supervised learning. Thereby, the proposed scheme provides accurate parameter estimates and a fast convergence rate even in low signal-to-noise ratio regimes, where the primary signal is dominated by the noise at the local sensors.

      • Relay-based single carrier transmission with SFBC in uplink fast fading channels

        Dae-Young Seol,Ui-Kun Kwon,Gi-Hong Im,Eung-Sun Kim IEEE 2007 IEEE COMMUNICATIONS LETTERS Vol.11 No.12

<P>This letter proposes a relay-based single carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) with space-frequency block code (SFBC) in a distributed fashion. The proposed scheme achieves spatial diversity in uplink fast fading channels without the complexity of multiple antennas at source (mobile equipment). The source of the proposed system has a very simple transmitter structure without any increase of peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In order to obtain spatial diversity, the transmit sequence of relay is efficiently generated in the time domain, which realizes the SFBC. The corresponding destination structure and frequency domain equalization are also presented. Simulation result shows that the proposed system considerably outperforms the distributed space-time block code (D-STBC) SC-FDE over fast fading channels.</P>

Domestic Korea construction industry experiences higher accident rate than other industries due to overtime and extra works resulted from inadequately planned short schedule. After identifying candidate drivers affecting construction schedule of an apartment project from intensive interviews with experts, a total of 117 field data was collected in order to develop a standard for determining whether or not a planned schedule for concrete structural frameworks is optimum. From correlation and multiple regression analyses with the data, four drivers, namely ‘ratio of floor area to site’, ‘no. of floors’, ‘no. of ground floors’, and ‘no. of days needed for concrete curing’, were identified. Furthermore, a two-way table using ‘no. of ground floors’ and ‘no. of underground floors’ has been developed for the determination of an optimum schedule. It was also found that the driver of ‘no. of days needed for concrete curing’ can be used as an adjustment factor for better judgement of the duration. The results will be in the great interests for those that are likely to check if planned or changed schedule is how optimum and to reduce risk of accident let by too much extra and overtime works.
