        Synthesis of New 8-Formyl-4-methyl-7-hydroxy Coumarin Derivatives

        8-Formyl-4-Methyl-7-Hydroxy Coumarin Derivatives were synthesized via Penchem condensation followed by Duffs reaction. Treatment of this with N,N-di substituted cyano acetamides in the presence of piperdine afforded New 8-Formyl-4-Methyl-7-Hydroxy Coumarin Derivatives (7a-o). Their structures were characterized by IR, $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR and Mass spectral and elemental analysis data.

        Efficacy of Cyanobacterial Biofertilizer (CBB) on Leaf Yield and Quality of Mulberry and its Impact on Silkworm Cocoon Characters

        An experiment was conducted to study the efficiency of cyanobacterial biofertilizer (CBB) with chemical (NPK) fertilizer on quantitative and qualitative characters of mulberry variety Kanva-2. Their influences on silkworm growth and cocoon characters were also studied. Ten different CBB and NPK fertilizer treatments were given to 5000 plants of established mulberry garden. Treatments were of four types viz., (i) T1 to T7: single and combination dose of CBB+50% NPK (ii) T8: combination dose of CBB + 25%NPK, (iii) T9: CBB only and (iv) T10: control-l00% NPK. Soil pH decreased and nutrients status increased in CBB (T1- T9) treated plots. Average of ten crops data on quantitative traits revealed that T7 (CBB [N. muscorum (1.0 g), A. variahilis (1.0) and S. millei (1.0 g)] + 50% NPK) was very effective in improving growth parameters. Leaf yield was also found high in treatment T7 (32.12 tons/ha/yr.) followed by T10 (31.17 tons/ha/yr.) and T8 (27.67 tons/ha/yr.). Leaf quality characters were found high in T7 and low in T9. Most of the quality traits in T7 are on par with control no. The results revealed that reduction in the dose of chemical fertilizers in T7 did not affect the leaf yield and leaf quality traits of mulberry. This clearly indicates that the efficiency of CBB (T7) provides nitrogen, increases essential nutrients available in soil, maintain soil pH and supply growth substances required for the improvement of leaf yield and leaf quality of mulberry. Bioassay study also revealed no significant difference in silkworm growth and cocoon characters between treatments T7 and T10. Economics calculated revealed that T7 is highly economical and beneficial over T10 by gaining an amount of Rs. 660/-/acre/crop. Thus, treatment T7 containing N. muscorum (1.0 g), A. variahilis (1.0 g) and S. millei (1.0 g) + 50% NPK fertilizers can be recommended to sericulturists mainly to reduce the use of NPK fertilizers, by saving 50% of its cost and to improve soil fertility conditions, which in turn improves leaf yield and quality of mulberry.

        Electrical and mechanical properties of diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn1-xMnxS nanocrystalline films

        Nanostructured Zn1-xMnxS films (0 ≼ x ≼ 0.25) were deposited on glass substrates by simple resistive thermal evaporation technique. All the films were deposited at 300 K in a vacuum of 2 × 10-6 m bar. All the films temperature dependence of resistivity revealed semiconducting behaviour of the samples. Hot probe test revealed that all the samples exhibited n-type conductivity. The nanohardness of the films ranges from 4.7 to 9.9 GPa, Young’s modulus value ranging 69.7–94.2 GPa.

        Studies on Boil-off Loss Ratio in the Cocoon Shells of Multivoltine×Bivoltine Hybrids of Silkworm, Bombyx mori L.

        The process of removal of gummy proteinous material sericin from silk is commonly called as degumming loss or boil-off loss ratio. In the present study, the boil-off loss ratio in the cocoon shells of twelve multivoltine×bivoltine hybrids and their parents were analysed. Inheritance pattern of boil-off loss ratio was analysed in crosses involving high and low boil-off loss parents, F1s, F2s and back-crosses by parent off spring regression analysis. Heterosis and heterobeltiosis was also analysed for this character, Highly significant (P>0.01) variations were observed in eight out of ten multivoltine and two out of five bivoltine parents indicating the presence of genetic variation in the expression of boil-off loss ratio. Among F1 hybrids, ten hybrids expressed significant (P>0.01) variations when compared with control hybrid PM×NB4D2. Significant negative heterosis was expressed in three multi×bi hybrids viz., BL67×CSR101, 96A×CSR19 and 96C×CSR19, which is desirable for this character, whereas expression of heterobeltiosis was significant only with one hybrid, 96C×CSR18 in desired direction. Studies on inheritance pattern showed that the character is heritable and contribution percentage of female and male in the ratio of 50.9: 49.1 and it appears that both the parents are influencing in the expression of boil-off loss ratio in silkworm. Based on the overall performance and evaluation by multiple trait evaluation index and also considering the expression of the boil-off loss ratio three hybrids viz., BL67×CSR101, 96A×CSR19 and 96C×CSR18 were found superior and recommended for commercial exploitation.

      • Prognostication of Climate Using Sliding Window Algorithm

        Weather forecasting is the task of determining future state of the atmosphere. To predict the future’s weather condition, the variation in the conditions in past years must be utilized. The probability that the weather condition of the day in consideration will match the same day in previous year is very less. But the probability that it will match within the span of adjacent sixty days of previous year is very high. A Sliding window algorithm is emerging as a leading methodology for the application of weather prediction. So, the prediction is made based on sliding window algorithm. So, sixty days are considered for previous year a sliding window is selected of size equivalent to fifteen days. Every thirty days of sliding window is then matched with that of current year’s thirty days in consideration. The best matched window is made to participate in the process of predicting weather conditions. The month wise results are being computed for four months to check the accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate that the applied technique gives better predicted weather conditions are quite efficient with an average accuracy of 94.21%.

        Higher concentrations of folic acid reduced the dietary requirements of supplemental methionine for commercial broilers

        Objective: An experiment was conducted to study the effect of supplementing DL methionine (DL Met) at graded concentrations on performance, carcass variables, immune responses and antioxidant variables in broiler chicken fed folic acid (FA) fortified (4 mg/kg) lowmethionine diet.Methods: A basal diet (BD) without supplemental DL Met, but with higher level (4 mg/kg) of FA and a control diet (CD) with the recommended concentration of methionine (Met) were prepared. The BD was supplemented with DL Met at graded concentrations (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% supplemental DL Met of CD). Each diet was fed ad libitum to 10 replicates of 5 broiler male chicks in each from 1 to 42 d of age.Results: Body weight gain (BWG) reduced, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) increased in broilers fed low-Met BD. At 30% and 20% inclusion of DL met, the BWG and FCR, respectively were similar to those fed the CD. Similarly, supplementation of 10% DL Met to the BD significantly increased ready to cook meat yield and breast meat weight, which were similar to those of the CD fed broilers. Lipid peroxidation reduced, the activity of antioxidant enzymes (GSHPx and GSHRx) in serum increased and lymphocyte proliferation increased with increased supplemental DL Met level in the BD. The concentrations of total protein and albumin in serum increased with DL Met supplementation to the BD.Conclusion: Based on the data, it can be concluded that supplemental Met can be reduced to less than 50% in broiler chicken diets (4.40, 3.94, and 3.39 g/kg, respectively in pre-starter, starter and finisher phases) containing 4 mg/kg FA.
