Lepidoscelio viatrix is a potential biocontrol agent of the eggs of wingless grasshopper, Neorthacris acuticeps nilgerensis, in mulberry plantation in natural conditions. The present investigation was undertaken to understand the attachment of the parasite to the hopper under scanning electron microscope and the oviposition behavior of the parasite. The results reveal that the parasite grips firmly to the lateral and dorsal surfaces of the female grasshopper with its mandibles implanted in the intersegmental membranes of the abdominal segments. During oviposition, L. viatrix initially turn around the egg pod and protrude its ovipositor and insert into the eggs. It lays eggs inside the eggs of grasshopper by an up and down movement of the ovipositor, Further, field observations indicated a drastic fall in the incidence of the grasshopper population on mulberry, with the increased parasitization of L. viatrix.

A comprehensive study on daily pupal weight loss due to histolysis and histgenesis in Bombyx mori Linn., has been undertaken. The percentag of pupal weight loss in the male pupa is higher than the female, conforming that the female pupa require more energy in the form of less pupal weight loss for ovipositional activities. The regression equation clearly shows higher percentage loss of daily pupal weight in male than female with respect to age and, this is also evident from the slope of the regression line. Moreover, analysis of the coefficient of correlation shows that the weight loss of pupa is directly correlated with the age rather than climatic parameters under which the pupa dwells.
Stimulation of Fecundity through Antennal Amputation in the Mulberry Silkworm, Bombyx mori L.
Singh, Ravindra,Kumar, Virendra,Kariappa, B.K.,Dandin, S.B.,Rao, D.Raghavendra Korean Society of Sericultural Science 2004 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.8 No.2
Stimulation of fecundity following female antennal amputation has been reported for the first time in silkworm. Antennal amputation caused significant increase in fecundity in two newly evolved multivoltine silkworm breeds viz., BL 67 and 96A. This study indicated better chances for increasing egg yield and the increase in fecundity may be attributed to the action of some neurohormones. Significance of antennal amputation in silkworm has been discussed.
Parthenogenesis in Silkworm, Bombyx mori L.

Parthenogenesis in mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori L. acquires immense use in the development of outstanding homozygous lines with higher viability, hybrid vigour, combining ability and less phenotypic variability. It can serve as a powerful tool in controlling sex of the offsprings as well as a useful tool in selection. In fact India is the second largest silk producing country in the world next only to China and all the five types of natural silks viz., mulberry, oak tasar, tropical tasar, muga and eri are produced in India. However, little information is available on the role of artificial parthenogenesis in the development of superior silkworm breeds. This paper overviews some important studies carried out on artificial parthenogenesis, and outline of different types of parthenogenesis, methods of induction of artificial parthenogenesis, factors responsible for successful parthenogenetic development, cytogenetics of artificial parthenogenesis and role of artificial parthenogenesis in silkworm breeding. Besides, an attempt is made to describe briefly about parthenogenetic engineering which includes cloning in silkworm, artificial insemination, chimeras, hybridization, chromosomal substitution and recombinant DNA in silkworm.

The general and specific combining abilities and hybrid vigour of seven polyvoltine breeds [BL24, BL62, BL6S, BL67, BL68, BL69, and Pure Mysore (PM)] with five bivoltine breeds (NB4D2, CSR2, CSR5, CSR18 and CSR19) were evaluated in a line ${times}$ tester design by analysing six quantitative traits viz., fecundity, yield 110,000 larvae both by number and weight, cocoon weight, shell weight and cocoon shell ratio. ANOVA estimates showed significant effects for all the traits indicating the role of both additive and non- additive gene actions. Estimation of GCA revealed that the breed BL67 exhibited significant positive effects toy all the six traits followed by BL68 for four important economic traits viz., fecundity, cocoon weight, shell weight and cocoon shell ratio. Among testers, CSR5 showed significant GCA effects for five traits whereas CSR2 exhibited for shell weight and shell ratio. Three hybrids viz., BL67${times}$ NB4D2, BL67 ${times}$CSR5 and BL67${times}$ CSR19 excelled in four quantitative traits for SCA. Majority of the hybrids expressed positive hybrid vigour for cocoon yield/10,000 larvae by weight, cocoon weight and shell weight. Four hybrids namely PM ${times}$ NB4D2, BL67 ${times}$NB4D2, BL67${times}$ CSR5 and BL67${times}$ CSR19 manifesting positive hybrid vigour for five economic traits were adjudicated as best Heterotic hybrids and recommended for commercial exploitation to increase the silk yield.

Breeding programme was initiated during November, 1995 with the main objective to breed productive multivoltine breeds/ hybrids with suitable genetic constitution to suit the fluctuating tropical climate prevailed in India. Two multivoltine breeds viz., BL-24 and BL-27 selected were as breeding resource materials from the silkworm germplasm maintained at Central Sericul-tural Research and Training Institute, Mysore. By adopting hybridization, backcrossing inbreeding and selection, a new multivoltine breed namely BL-67. This breed spins light greenish yellow cocoons and cocoon shape is oval with medium to coarse grains. The evolved breed was crossed with five tropical bivoltine breeds viz., NB4D2, CSR2, CSR5, CSR18 and CSR101 to study the combining ability, and identified a superior hybrid, BL67 ${\times}$ CSR101, named as CAUVERY, The hybrid is characterized by high pupation rate (>95%), high shell weight (> 35 cg), high cocoon shell ratio (> 20%), longer filament length (> 900 m) and high neatness (93) with a renditta of 6.5 producing 2A-3A grade silk. The hybrid is selected for Race Autho-rization test of Central Silk Board.
