        Gamification and Audience Response Systems in Foreign Language Education

        This paper describes how we integrated the concept of gamification into our newly developed Portuguese-as-additional-language teaching materials that were designed to be part of our book series Conversando em Português (Talking in Portuguese) (2019). We present here both the theoretical framework that presided over the elaboration of gamified elements and our methodology, and illustrate the approach with some sample work that focuses on the use of Audience Response Systems (ARS). In foreign language education, gamification has been employed in a variety of settings, from elementary levels up to college instruction. Creating motivation and stimulating interaction are two of the most important goals of any conversation-focused activity. Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a theoretical background, we developed language learning games that can motivate and engage our students.

        Ten Thousand Miles Away: teaching distant languages and the role of grammar

        It is a constant challenge for teachers and learners alike to teach Indo-European countries, like English, French and Spanish in country with a very distant native language like Korea. The opposite, of course, holds true, teaching Korean for European learners is an equally arduous endeavor. In this essayistic paper, I revise the concepts of language distance and language transference, explaining how important they are for successful learning of foreign language. I try to explain how to measure language distance and justify why Korean may be considered a very distant language from European languages. Following that, I talk about how distance impacts transference of knowledge and, thus, learning, motivation and students’ attitude. I will claim that, because the teaching of European languages has been for a long time an endemic enterprise, these two characteristics have been largely ignored by those preparing pedagogical material. I discuss that the experience of dealing with distant languages challenge some of unspoken assumptions of both Foreign Language Acquisition.

        Production and Characterization of a Collagenolytic Serine Proteinase by Penicillium aurantiogriseum URM 4622: A Factorial Study

        A 2^4 full factorial design was used to identify the main effects and interactions of the initial medium pH, soybean flour concentration, temperature and orbital agitation speed on extracellular collagenase production by Penicillium aurantiogriseum URM4622. The most significant variables for collagenase production were soybean flour concentration and initial medium pH that had positive main effects, and temperature that had a negative one. Protein concentration in soybean flour revealed to be a significant factor for the production of a collagenase serine proteinase. The most favorable production conditions were found to be 0.75% soybean flour, pH 8.0, 200 rpm, and 28ºC, which led to a collagenase activity of 164 U. The enzyme showed an optimum activity at 37℃ and pH 9.0,was stable over wide ranges of pH and temperature (6.0 ~10.0 and 25 ~ 45℃, respectively) and was strongly inhibited by 10 mM phenylmethylsulphonylfluoride. The firstorder rate constants for collagenase inactivation in the crude extract, calculated from semi-log plots of the residual activity versus time, were used in Arrhenius and Eyring plots to estimate the main thermodynamic parameters of thermoinactivation (E^*_d = 107.4 kJ/mol and ΔH^*_d = 104.7kJ/mol). The enzyme is probably an extracellular neutral serine collagenase effective on azocoll, gelatin and collagen decomposition.

        포르투갈어 동사 활용 학습: 동사 활용표의 대안 모색을 위한 사례 연구

        동사 활용표는 외국어로서의 포르투갈어 교수·학습에 있어 기본적인 필수 요소이다. 포르투갈어 동사의 다양한 활용 형태로 인해 학습자들은 포르투갈어 습득 기간의 대부분을 동사 변형을 암기하는 데 집중한다. 본고에서는 포르투갈어 교수·학습을 위해 주로 어떤 방법론이 사용되는지 파악하기 위해 대표적인 외국어로서의 포르투갈어 교수·학습 교과서 문헌을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 동사 활용표가 외국어로서의 포르투갈어 교수·학습 교과서 전체에 도입되어 사용되고 있음을 확인하였다. 외국어 학습자들은 학습과제와 과정에 따라 정보를 탐구하고 내재화한다는 점을 고려하여, 포르투갈어 학습자들을 대상으로 설문 조사를 수행하고 폴리코릭 요인 테스트를 통해 응답을 분석한 후 서수 로지스틱 회귀를 통해 분석 연구를 진행하였다. 실험 결과, 학습자들이 동사 활용표를 지속적으로 사용하는 경우라 하더라도 다른 학습전략을 함께 시도할 경우 학습과제를 덜 어렵게 느낄 뿐만 아니라 단순한 동사 활용 학습은 소모적으로 인식한다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 이와 같이 현재의 포르투갈어 문법 교수·학습은 전통적인 동사 활용표의 제시를 넘어 보다 다양한 교수·학습 전략을 모색할 필요가 있다. Conjugation tables are a basic staple in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language. Due to the rich verbal morphology, students spend a considerable time of their acquisition period concentrating in memorizing all verb inflections. In this paper we examine first a representative sample of Portuguese as second language textbooks, to explore what methods are used to teach the subject. Results show that conjugation tables are the only way conjugation is introduced in the totality of the textbooks. In the second part, we turn to students’ perceptions on the subject matter and in their processes to study and internalize the information. For that, we conducted a survey and analyzed the responses through polychoric and factorial tests and finally through ordinal linear regression. Results show that students use conjugation tables constantly, but the ones that try different strategies perceive the subject as less difficult and time-consuming. We propose that there is an important gap to be filled in the teaching of grammar and it is past time to develop more methods beyond the traditional conjugation tables.

        Escalando a barreira da língua:um exame de como as propostas curriculares brasileiras lidam com a distância linguística

        In this work, we review critically the Curricula proposal for medium distance languages, the official document from Brazilian government, published by the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Brazil. This Proposal aims to harmonize the Portuguese teaching policies in Brazilian cultural centers and other programs. We start by discussing the state of the art on linguistic distance and language transfer. Afterwards, we review the proposal in three parts: 1) Theoretical basis for the the proposal; 2) A critic to the languages selected as representatives of the medium distance category, namely: Italian, French, English, Dutch, Finnish, Hebraic and Arabic. Finally, even if you point the weak points in the documents, our aim is to make a contribution to the future development of the policies and to aid in the discussion.

        An efficient method to model the time-domain behavior of viscoelastically damped systems based on an improved fractional derivative model

        Viscoelastic materials are widely used as an efficient passive control technique to mitigate undesirable vibration and noise in many engineering fields. However, the damping properties of these materials are strongly influenced by operational and environmental factors, such as excitation frequency and operating temperature, leading to some difficulty during the finite element modelling of engineering systems containing these materials, especially for transient analysis. Thus, it is proposed herein an improved fractional derivative model to be combined with the finite element method in a straightforward way to describe the frequency- and temperature-dependent behavior of viscoelastic materials. As an academic application, the influence of the temperature on the transient responses of a viscoelastic sandwich beam subjected to some types of excitations is addressed. Moreover, the parameters of the viscoelastic model are obtained by curve-fitting for each operating temperature and the resulting equations of motion of the viscoelastic system in the time-domain are solved by using the Newmark integration scheme. Through this improved fractional derivative model, the time-domain responses of the viscoelastic sandwich beam are evaluated for several operating temperatures and compared with the corresponding obtained by the open literature to demonstrate the main features and capabilities of the proposed method.

        High removal of emerging contaminants from wastewater by activated carbons derived from the shell of cashew of Para

        Abstract Activated carbon from the shell of the cashew of Para (SCP) was produced by chemical activation with ZnCl using the ratio of SCP: ZnCl2 1.0:1.5 at 700 °C. The prepared activated carbon (SCP700) was used for the removal of two emerging contaminants, 4-bromophenol (4-BrPhOH) and 4-chloroaniline (4-ClPhNH2) that are primarily employed in the industry. Different analytical techniques were used to characterize the activated carbon. From the N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms were obtained the specific surface area of 1520 m2 g? 1 and total pore volume of 0.492 cm3 g?1. The functional groups were identified by the FTIR technique and quantified by modified Boehm titration. The results revealed the bearing of several functional groups on the SCP700 surface, which may utterly influence the removal of the emerging contaminants. The equilibrium experiments showed that the maximum uptaken capacities (Qmax) achieved at 45 °C were 488.2 (4-BrPhOH) and 552.5 mg g?1 (4-ClPhNH2). The thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that the processes of 4-BrPhOH and 4-ClPhNH2 adsorption are exothermic, spontaneous, energetically suitable, and the magnitude of ΔH° is compatible with physisorption. The mechanism of the adsorption of the emerging contaminants onto the carbon surface is dominated by microporous filling, hydrogen bonds, π-stacking interactions, and other Van der Waals interactions. The use of activated carbon for the treatment of industrial synthetic wastewater with several inorganic and organic molecules commonly found in industrial effluents showed a very high percentage of uptaking (up to 98.64%).

        Comparing a tablet computer and paper forms for assessing patient-reported outcomes in edentulous patients

        PURPOSE The aim of this study was to determine whether two methods of documentation, print and electronic forms, for the assessment of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in complete denture wearers provide comparable results. The study also quantified the time needed for filling the forms by each method. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty participants enrolled in a university clinic answered two forms (a questionnaire for denture satisfaction and OHIP-EDENT). They provided answers with two application methods in a random order, with a one-month interval between them: (1) electronic forms on a tablet computer; and (2) print forms. The methods were compared in terms of mean results, correlation/agreement, internal consistency, and spent time. RESULTS Mean results for both methods were similar for each denture satisfaction item (100-mm VAS) and OHIP-EDENT summary score. Both questionnaires presented good internal consistency regardless of the application method (Cronbach's α=0.86 or higher). Correlation and agreement between the methods regarding specific items was at least moderate for the majority of cases. Mean time for the electronic and print forms were 9.2 and 8.5 minutes, respectively (paired t test, P=.06, non-significant). CONCLUSION The electronic method is comparable to print forms for the assessment of important PRO of prosthetic treatment for edentulism, considering the results and time needed. Findings suggest the viability of replacing print forms with a tablet for applying the tested inventories in clinical trials.
