Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Increased Autonomic Activation and Improved Symptoms of Depression and Insomnia among Patients with Major Depression Disorder

        I-Mei Lin,Sheng-Yu Fan,Cheng-Fang Yen,Yi-Chun Yeh,Tze‐Chun Tang,Mei-Feng Huang,Tai-Ling Liu,Peng-Wei Wang,Huang-Chi Lin,Hsin-Yi Tsai,Yu-Che Tsai 대한정신약물학회 2019 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.17 No.2

Objective: Autonomic imbalance is considered a psychopathological mechanism underlying major depressive disorder (MDD). Heart rate variability (HRV) is an index for autonomic activation. Poor sleep quality is common among patients with MDD. HRV biofeedback (BF) has been used for regulating autonomic balance among patients with physical illness and mental disorders. The purpose of present study was to examine the effects of HRV-BF on depressive symptoms, sleep quality, pre-sleep arousal, and HRV indices, in patients with MDD and insomnia. Methods: In this case-controlled study, patients with MDD and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score higher than 6 were recruited. The HRV-BF group received weekly 60-minute protocol for 6 weeks, and the control group who have matched the age and sex received medical care only. All participants were assessed on Beck Depression Inventory-II, Back Anxiety Inventory, PSQI, and Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale. Breathing rates and electrocardiography were also performed under resting state at pre-testing, and post-testing conditions and for the HRV-BF group, also at 1-month follow-up. Results: In the HRV-BF group, symptoms of depression and anxiety, sleep quality, and pre-sleep arousal were significantly improved, and increased HRV indices, compared with the control group. Moreover, in the HRV-BF group, significantly improved symptoms of depression and anxiety, decreased breathing rates, and increased HRV indices were detected at post-testing and at 1-month follow-up, compared with pre-testing values. Conclusion: This study confirmed that HRV-BF is a useful psychosocial intervention for improving autonomic balance, baroreflex, and symptoms of depression and insomnia in MDD patients.

Notch1 promotes the pericytemyofibroblast transition in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis through the PDGFR/ ROCK1 signal pathway

        Yi-Chun Wang,Qiong Chen,Jun-Ming Luo,Jing Nie,Qing-He Meng,Wei Shuai,Han Xie,Jia-Mei Xia,Hui Wang 생화학분자생물학회 2019 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.51 No.-

The goals of this study were to investigate the role of the Notch1/PDGFRβ/ROCK1 signaling pathway in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis and to explore the possibility of treating fibrosis by targeting Notch1. Lung tissues from patients with pulmonary fibrosis were examined for the expression of Notch1/PDGFRβ/ROCK1 using RT-qPCR, western blotting, and immunostaining. Cultured mouse lung pericytes were transfected with Notch1-overexpressed vectors or shRNA targeting PDGFRβ/ROCK1 to examine cell behaviors, including proliferation, cell cycle arrest, and differentiation toward myofibroblasts. Finally, a mouse pulmonary fibrosis model was prepared, and a Notch1 inhibitor was administered to observe tissue morphology and pericyte cell behaviors. Human pulmonary fibrotic tissues presented with overexpression of Notch1, PDGFRβ, and ROCK1, in addition to a prominent transition of pericytes into myofibroblasts. In cultured mouse lung pericytes, overexpression of Notch1 led to the accelerated proliferation and differentiation of cells, and it also increased the expression of the PDGFRβ and ROCK1 proteins. The knockdown of PDGFRβ/ROCK1 in pericytes remarkably suppressed pericyte proliferation and differentiation. As further substantiation, the administration of a Notch1 inhibitor in a mouse model of lung fibrosis inhibited the PDGFRβ/ROCK1 pathway, suppressed pericyte proliferation and differentiation, and alleviated the severity of fibrosis. Our results showed that the Notch1 signaling pathway was aberrantly activated in pulmonary fibrosis, and this pathway may facilitate disease progression via mediating pericyte proliferation and differentiation. The inhibition of the Notch1 pathway may provide one promising treatment strategy for pulmonary fibrosis.

        Chun-Jen Huang,Hui-Min Hsieh,Herng-Chia Chiu,Peng-Wei Wang,Mei-Hsuan Lee,Chih-Yi Li,Ching-Hua Lin 대한신경정신의학회 2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.6

Objective: The study investigated to compare health care utilization and expenditures between diabetic patients with and without depression in Taiwan. Methods: Health care utilization and expenditure among diabetic patients with and without depression disorder during 2000 and 2004 were examined using Taiwan’s population-based National Health Insurance claims database. Health care utilization included outpatient visits and the use of inpatient services, and health expenditures were outpatient, inpatient, and total medical expenditures. Moreover, general estimation equation models were used for analyzing the factors associated with outpatient visits and expenditures. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied for identifying the factors associated with hospitalization. Results: The average annual outpatient visits and annual total medical expenditures in the study period were 44.23–52.20; NT$87,496–133,077 and 30.75–32.92; NT$64,411–80,955 for diabetic patients with and without depression. After adjustment for covariates, our results revealed that gender and complication were associated with out-patient visits. Moreover, the time factor was associated with the total medical expenditure, and residential urbanization and complication factors were associated with hospitalization. Conclusion: Health care utilization and expenditures for diabetic patients with depression were significantly higher than those without depression. Sex, complications, time, and urbanization are the factors associated with health care utilization and expenditures.

Polypropylene/Carbon Fiber Composite Layered Materials: Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Effect and Mechanical Performance

        Mei-Feng Lai,Chen-Hung Huang,Jia-Horng Lin,Yu-Chun Chuang,Ching-Hua Wang,Ching-Wen Lou 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.9

In this study, conductive polymer composites and conductive functional fabrics are combined to serve aselectromagnetic shielding planks. Polypropylene (PP), carbon black (CB), and short carbon fibers (SCF) are blended atdifferent ratios to form conductive polymer composites (i.e. PCS series). The mechanical property, electrical property, morphology, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the PCS series are evaluated. The testresults show that with 20 wt% of conductive fillers (i.e. CB and SCF), PCS20 exhibits the optimal tensile strength, flexuralstrength, and electrical property that is 7 order of magnitude higher than that of pure PP plates. Moreover, the EMI SE of thisgroup also reaches -30 dB, which meets level one of civil EMI SE standard. Therefore, PCS20 is used to combine with fourconductive sandwiches. The resulting multilayered functional PCS-sandwich planks are tested in terms of mechanicalproperty, morphology, and EMI SE. The test results show that the planks composed of a pure conductive woven sandwichhave the maximum tensile property and significantly improved impact resistance. All of the multilayered functional plankshave EMI SE that is higher than -50 dB and are qualified for the protection level of standard EMI SE electronic devices.

      • Recent Progress in HER2 Associated Breast Cancer

Wang, Wei-Jia,Lei, Yuan-Yuan,Mei, Jin-Hong,Wang, Chun-Liang Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.7

Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide among women and the second most common cancer. Approximately 15-23% of breast cancers over-express human epidermal growth factor receptor2 (HER2), a 185-kDa transmembrane tyrosine kinase, which is mainly found at the cell surface of tumor cells. HER2-positive breast cancer, featuring amplification of HER2/neu and negative expression of ER and PR, has the three following characteristics: rapid tumor growth, lower survival rate, and better response to adjuvant therapies. Clinically, it is notable for its role in a pathogenesis that is associated with increased disease recurrence and acts as a worse prognosis. At the same time, it represents a good target for anti-cancer immunotherapy despite the prevalence of drug resistance. New treatments are a major topic of research, and a brighter future can be expected. This review discusses the role of HER2 in breast cancer, therapeutic modalities available and prognostic factors.

The induction of apoptosis by a newly synthesized diosgenyl saponin through the suppression of estrogen receptor-α in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells.

Chun, Jaemoo,Han, Lina,Xu, Mei Ying,Wang, Bo,Cheng, Mao Sheng,Kim, Yeong Shik Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 2014 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.37 No.11

Estrogen receptor (ER)-α is an important therapeutic target in the clinical treatment of breast cancer. A potential down-regulator of ER-α, diosgenyl α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(12)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(14)]-α-L-arabinopyranoside is a newly synthesized diosgenyl saponin named compound 22. This study evaluated the in vitro mechanism of compound 22 as an anticancer agent for breast cancer. Our results indicated that compound 22 selectively inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in ER-positive MCF-7 cells, compared with ER-negative MDA-MB-231 and MCF-10A cells. Western blot analysis showed that compound 22 decreased the expression of procaspase-3, procaspase-8, and survivin; and increased the expression of Fas ligand and cleaved PARP1 in MCF-7 cells, indicating that compound 22-induced apoptosis was mediated by the extrinsic pathway. This apoptosis was associated with the suppression of ER-α protein and mRNA expression and the inhibition of ER-DNA binding to the estrogen responsive element. Moreover, ER-α mediated gene expression such as c-Myc and cyclin D1 was reduced, and the activation of p38 and ERK 1/2 was significantly decreased after treatment with compound 22 in MCF-7 cells. Taken together, these results demonstrate that compound 22 down-regulates ER-α expression and induces apoptosis through the extrinsic pathway, suggesting that compound 22 may be effective in the treatment of ER-positive breast cancer.

The role of the genomic mutation signature and tumor mutation burden on relapse risk prediction in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma after concurrent chemoradiotherapy

        Wang Hui-Ching,Moi Sin-Hua,Chan Leong-Perng,Wu Chun-Chieh,Du Jeng-Shiun,Liu Pei-Lin,Chou Meng-Chun,Wu Che-Wei,Huang Chih-Jen,Hsiao Hui-Hua,Pan Mei-Ren,Chen Li-Tzong 생화학분자생물학회 2023 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.55 No.-

Personalized genetic profiling has focused on improving treatment efficacy and predicting risk stratification by identifying mutated genes and selecting targeted agents according to genetic testing. Therefore, we evaluated the role of genetic profiling and tumor mutation burden (TMB) using next-generation sequencing in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC). The relapse mutation signature (RMS) and chromatin remodeling mutation signature (CRMS) were explored to predict the risk of relapse in patients with HNSC treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) with platinum-based chemotherapy. Patients in the high RMS and CRMS groups showed significantly shorter relapse-free survival than those in the low RMS and CRMS groups, respectively (p < 0.001 and p = 0.006). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that extranodal extension, CCRT response, and three somatic mutation profiles (TMB, RMS, and CRMS) were independent risk predictors for HNSC relapse. The predictive nomogram showed satisfactory performance in predicting relapse-free survival in patients with HNSC treated with CCRT.

Adaptive State-of-Charge Estimation Method for an Aeronautical Lithium-ion Battery Pack Based on a Reduced Particle-unscented Kalman Filter

        Wang, Shun-Li,Yu, Chun-Mei,Fernandez, Carlos,Chen, Ming-Jie,Li, Gui-Lin,Liu, Xiao-Han The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2018 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.18 No.4

A reduced particle-unscented Kalman filter estimation method, along with a splice-equivalent circuit model, is proposed for the state-of-charge estimation of an aeronautical lithium-ion battery pack. The linearization treatment is not required in this method and only a few sigma data points are used, which reduce the computational requirement of state-of-charge estimation. This method also improves the estimation covariance properties by introducing the equilibrium parameter state of balance for the aeronautical lithium-ion battery pack. In addition, the estimation performance is validated by the experimental results. The proposed state-of-charge estimation method exhibits a root-mean-square error value of 1.42% and a mean error value of 4.96%. This method is insensitive to the parameter variation of the splice-equivalent circuit model, and thus, it plays an important role in the popularization and application of the aeronautical lithium-ion battery pack.

      • Kojic Acid Protects C57BL/6 Mice from Gamma-irradiation Induced Damage

        Wang, Kai,Liu, Chao,Di, Chan-Juan,Ma, Cong,Han, Chun-Guang,Yuan, Mei-Ru,Li, Peng-Fei,Li, Lu,Liu, Yong-Xue Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.1

The radioprotective effects of a single administration of kojic acid (KA) against ionizing radiation were evaluated via assessment of 30-day survival and alterations of peripheral blood parameters of adult C57BL/6 male mice. The 30-day survival rate of mice pretreated with KA (75 or 300 mg/kg body weight, KA75 or KA300) subcutaneously 27 h prior to a lethal dose (8 Gy, 153.52 cGy/min) of gamma irradiation was higher than that of mice irradiated alone (40% or 60% vs 0%). It was observed that the white blood cell (WBC) count/the red blood cell (RBC) count, haemoglobin content, haematocrit and platelet count of mice with or without KA pretreatment as exposed to a sub-lethal dose (4 Gy, 148.14 cGy/min) of gamma irradiation decreased maximally at day 4/day 8 post-irradiation. Although the initial WBC values were low in KA300 or WR-2721 (amifostine) groups, they significantly recovered to normal at day 19, whereas in the control group they did not. The results from the cytotoxicity and cell viability assays demonstrated that KA could highly protect Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells against ionizing radiation with low toxicity. In summary, KA provides marked radioprotective effects both in vivo and in vitro.
