        A P2P-to-UPnP Proxy Gateway Architecture for Home Multimedia Content Distribution

        Deploying advanced home networking technologies and modern home-networked devices in residential environments provides a playground for new home applications and services. Because home multimedia entertainment is among the most essential home applications, this paper presents an appealing home media content sharing scenario: home-networked devices can discover neighboring devices and share local media content, as well as enormous amounts of Internet media content in a convenient and networked manner. This ideal scenario differs from traditional usages that merely offer local media content and require tedious manual operations of connection setup and file transfer among various devices. To achieve this goal, this study proposes a proxy gateway architecture for home multimedia content distribution. The proposed architecture integrates several functional mechanisms, including UPnP-based device discovery, home gateway, Internet media provision, and in-home media content delivery. This design addresses several inherent limitations of device heterogeneity and network interoperability on home and public networks, and allows diverse home-networked devices to play media content in an identical and networked manner. Prototypical implementation of the proposed proxy gateway architecture develops a proof-of-concept software, integrating a BitTorrent peer-to-peer client, a UPnP protocol stack, and a UPnP AV media server, as well as media distribution and management components on the OSGi home gateway platform. Practical demonstration shows the proposed design and scenario realization, offering users an unlimited volume of media content for home multimedia entertainment.

      • Improved DC Voltage Utilization for the Star-Connected Cascaded H-bridges Converter under Unbalanced Voltage Sags

        The static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) are installed at the medium-voltage level of power system for grid voltage regulation and power factor improvement. The star-connected cascaded multilevel converter is widely for high voltage and high rated power STATCOM application. The voltage balancing control is a fundamental issue for cascaded converter, which can be implemented by negative sequence current and zero sequence voltage injection. The zero sequence voltage injection increases the DC voltage utilization, thus the DC voltage and cascaded number should be expanded to avoid over-modulation. However, the increase of DC voltage and cascaded number result in the high cost of the system but reduce the efficiency. On the other hand, the negative sequence current injection results in significant peak current and would trigger the over-current protection. This study provides a voltage balancing strategy to improve the DC voltage utilization by regulating the effectiveness between zero sequence voltage and negative sequence current injection. In addition, the proposed method is based on power flow management. All the unbalanced components of grid voltage and converter output current are considered, thus the proposed method can satisfy for grid fault operation. Laboratory test results are for proposed method variation and validate that the converter can accomplish system operation and manage DC voltage utilization during grid fault operation.

      • Sustainable Urban Regeneration in Taiwanese Old Urban Districts: From a User's Perspective

        The researchers intend to approach urban regeneration issues in old urban districts from a user's perspective. Instead of experts' evaluation and professional disciplines, this research relies on the users' perceptions about the factors of the built environment on a liveable urban district. The case study areas are two historic districts in Tainan city - Chihkan district and Minsheng greenpark district. In order to measure the users' attitudes about regeneration issues, the researchers use Likert scale in questionnaire for users to fill in the right scale of their perception. The users to be surveyed can classify into two groups: 1) inhabitants in a district, 2) tourists in a district. As for inhabitants, questionnaire mainly concerns the liveability issues of an old district, for instance, the impact of high density on life quality, or satisfaction about local traffic; whilst for tourists, questionnaire concentrates on cultural tourism issues, for instance, the attractiveness of gourmet, cultural heritage or the degree of importance they feel about the retailing stores, and department stores in old districts etc. After collecting the questionnaires from both two groups, multivariate analysis is used in coding. By factor analysis, the key constructs concerning a liveable district can be concluded with priority order, for instance, cultural heritage as the most important construct, a neighbourhood for all social hierarchy as the second important construct, and a convenient neighbourhood as the third important construct and others. By descriptive statistics, the tourists' attitudes about historic districts can also be summarized, for instance, which element is more appealing to most tourists, or how important do most tourists feel about reused old buildings etc. Research results can be used to build regeneration strategies fit to the need of districts.

        Microstructure and Texture Evolution of AA 6063 During an Ex-ECAE Process

        Equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) has been studied at the lab scale for many years. However, few successful industrial applications of the ECAE process have been reported. In the present work, a process referred to as Ex-ECAE that was composed of two processes of the direct extrusion and the ECAE via route C, was developed. The Ex-ECAE process was developed to refine the microstructure of the extrudate, particular the coarse grain layer (CGL) on the surface of the extrudate. The Ex-ECAE die with a die angle of 120° contained three segments and was used in the conventional direct extrusion press. The high friction and the continuous routes of the ECAE resulted in asymmetric dead metal zones (DMZs) to be formed at the corners of the die channel. It revealed that the visible grains in the CGL were refined and became invisible due to the intense shear deformation as the CGL flowed along the boundaries of the asymmetric DMZs. The textures of the Ex-ECAE at the various segments were studied by EBSD. This study demonstrated that the ECAE process could be scaled up using the extrusion press. Success or lack of success depended on the capacity of the extrusion press and the die design.

        The Incremental Cost Matrix Procedure for Locating Repair Service Centers in Multinational Reverse Logistics

        This study provides a heuristic algorithm to solve the locating problem of repair service centers (RSCs). To enhance the customer service level with more satisfaction and quicker responsiveness, the locating problem of RSCs has become one of the important issues in reverse supply chain management. This problem is formulated as a zero-one mixed integer programming in which an exiting distributor will be considered to be an un-capacitated repair service center for the objective of cost-minimizing. Since logistical costs are highly interrelated with the multinational location of distributors and RSCs, the fixed cost for setting a repair service center, variable cost, transportation cost, and exchange rates are considered in this study. Recognizing the selection of un-capacitated RSCs’ locations is a combinatorial optimization problem and is a zero-one mixed integer programming with NP-hard complexity, we provide a heuristic algorithm named as incremental cost matrix procedure (ICMP) to simplify the solving procedure. By using the concise and structural cost matrix, ICMP can efficiently screen the potential location with cost advantage and effectively decide which distributor should be a RSC. Results obtained from the numerical experiments conducted in small scale problem have shown the fact that ICMP is an effective and efficient heuristic algorithm for solving the RSCs locating problem. In the future, using the extended ICMP to solve problems with larger industrial scale or problems with congestion effects caused by the variation of customer demand and the restriction of the RSC capacity is worth a further investigation.

        Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) Fruit Extracts Improve Colon Microflora and Exert Anti-Inflammatory Activities in Caco-2 Cells

        Intestinal microflora and inflammation are associated with the risk of inflammatory bowel diseases. Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) has various bioactivities, but its effect on colon health remains unknown. This study focused on the effects of fermented noni fruit extracts on colon microflora and inflammation of colon epithelial cells. The anti-inflammatory activities of ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts on Caco-2 cells were evaluated including interleukin-8 (IL-8) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). The growth of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species was promoted by ethanol extract. Ethyl acetate extract decreased intracellular reactive oxygen species and significantly suppressed COX-2, IL-8, and prostaglandin E2 production and neutrophil chemotaxis by suppressing the translocation of the p65 subunit. Quercetin was the main contributor to the anti-inflammatory activity. The fermented noni fruit promoted probiotic growths and downregulated the intracellular oxidation and inflammation in Caco-2 cells. These results suggest that fermented noni fruit might protect against inflammatory diseases of the colon.

        Laser Interference Lithography and Nanoimprint Techniques for Lower Reflection Transparent Conducting Oxide Hybrid Films

        The transparent conducting oxide (TCO) film is a significant component in flat panel display industry, applied for flexible display, e-paper, and touch panel. The TCO materials have high refractive index, so the phenomenon of high reflectance is the major issue and needs solved in present and future market. In this study, the structure and process of new lower reflection TCO hybrid film is introduced. The laser interference lithography and UV nanoimprint are combined for fabrication of sub-wavelength structures on PET film, then the tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) deposited on structures. Finally, the best result of this hybrid film is reflectance reduced to 3.3% at wavelength 550nm, just 13% of the original film, and the resistance of ITO layer is 1.05x10-3 Ω-cm. This result is useful for the TCO film applied in low reflection demand products in the future.
