Challenges in Managing Decommissioned Offshore Wind Turbine Blades: Now and the Future

As environmental concerns about the piling up of onshore wind turbine blades in landfills are on the rise, questions also arise regarding the disposal of decommissioned offshore wind turbine blades in the near future. Through a data mining process conducted on online databases of offshore wind farms, this study analyzed the growing pattern of offshore wind farms across countries and the scope of diversity in the type of wind turbine blades to decommission in the coming decades. The total capacity of offshore wind farms worldwide was found to increase rapidly, especially in the past few years. Besides the 17 countries with offshore wind farms currently in operation, 36 additional countries were found to have plans for building offshore wind farms. The first stream of rotor blades to decommission from offshore wind farms with a capacity above 400 MW is expected to be as early as year 2032. Common materials used for these rotor blades are composite materials, most of which can reportedly release hazardous gases during certain disposal processes. More research is needed to identify regulatory or technological strategies useful for the safe handling of these wastes.
Bee Venom Decreases LPS-Induced Inflammatory Responses in Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cells

The world dairy industry has long been challenged by bovine mastitis, an inflammatory disease, which causes economic loss due to decreased milk production and quality. Attempts have been made to prevent or treat this disease with multiple approaches, primarily through increased abuse of antibiotics, but effective natural solutions remain elusive. Bee venom (BV) contains a variety of peptides (e.g., melittin) and shows multiple bioactivities, including prevention of inflammation. Thus, in the current study, it was hypothesized that BV can reduce inflammation in bovine mammary epithelial cells (MAC-T). To examine the hypothesis, cells were treated with LPS (1 μg/ml) to induce an inflammatory response and the antiinflammatory effects of BV (2.5 and 5 μg/ml) were investigated. The cellular mechanisms of BV against LPS-induced inflammation were also investigated. Results showed that BV can attenuate expression of an inflammatory protein, COX2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α. Activation of NF-κB, an inflammatory transcription factor, was significantly downregulated by BV in cells treated with LPS, through dephosphorylation of ERK1/2. Moreover, pretreatment of cells with BV attenuated LPS-induced production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (e.g., superoxide anion). These results support our hypothesis that BV can decrease LPS-induced inflammatory responses in bovine mammary epithelial cells through inhibition of oxidative stress, NF-κB, ERK1/2, and COX-2 signaling.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought significant changes to today’s life. Human contact is regarded as a source of risk. Thus, the low-contact services provided by service robots have gained more attention in the hospitality industry. However, a relatively smaller proportion of empirical research exists about service robots on the consumer side. Moreover, technology acceptance theories were mostly used in the adoption of new technology products, but the psychological aspects of consumers were rarely explored. Therefore, the stimulus- organism-response model (SOR model) was applied to explore consumers’ acceptance of adopting service robots and to understand what factors will successfully stimulate consumers’ subsequent value and behavioral responses. Furthermore, we investigated the relationship among stimulus (coolness and affinity), organism (utilitarian value and hedonic value) and response (intention to use and word-of-mouth recommendation). This study used convenience sampling and tested the hypotheses with SPSS and Smart PLS.

This study purposed to look for its uses by analyzing useful substances in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabin us L.) leaves based on the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents in the leaves, DPPH radical scavenging activity of leaf extract, SOD activity, etc. by different growth stage and variety. According to the results of experiment, the total polyphenol content was highest in Everglade-41 (27.9 mg/g dw.), the total flavonoid content was highest in Tainung-2 (42.3 mg/g dw.), and SOD activity was highest in Dowling (96.1 %). However, DPPH radical scavenging activity was similar among the three varieties.

Design and Implementation of SDN-based 6LBR with QoS Mechanism over Heterogeneous WSN and Internet

Recently, the applications of Internet of Things (IoTs) are growing rapidly. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) becomes an emerging technology to provide the low power wireless connectivity for IoTs. The IPv6 over low-power wireless personal area networks (6LoWPAN) has been proposed by IETF, which gives each WSN device an IPv6 address to connect with the Internet. The transmission congestion in IoTs could be a problem when a large numbers of sensors are deployed in the field. Therefore, it is important to consider whether the WSN devices have be completely integrated into the Internet with proper quality of service (QoS) requirements. The Software Defined Network (SDN) is a new architecture of network decoupling the data and control planes, and using the logical centralized control to manage the forwarding issues in large-scale networks. In this research, the SDN-based 6LoWPAN Border Router (6LBR) is proposed to integrate the transmission fromWSNs to Internet. The proposed SDN-based 6LBR communicating between WSNs and the Internet will bring forward the requirements of end-to-end QoS with bandwidth guarantee. Based on our experimental results, we have observed that the selected 6LoWPAN traffic flows achieve lower packet loss rate in the Internet. Therefore, the 6LoWPAN traffic flows classified by SDN-based 6LBR can be reserved for the required bandwidth in the Internet to meet the QoS requirements.

Short-term and creep tests were performed on saturated silty mudstone obtained from the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Based on the triaxial creep test results, the variations of creep strain and creep rate of silty mudstone with time were analyzed in detail, and the differences between the axial and lateral creep parameters were quantitatively studied at different deviatoric stress levels. The longterm strength of silty mudstone was obtained. The results demonstrate that the lateral creep characteristics are more significant than the axial creep characteristics for silty mudstone in the tests. Analysis of the lateral creep characteristics of the rock is a reasonable approach to determine whether creep failure occurs in the silty mudstone. The long-term strength of silty mudstone decreases remarkably, and it is actually the lateral long-term strength of the rock. According to the triaxial creep curves of silty mudstone, a new nonlinear viscoelasto-plastic creep model was proposed by connecting in series the nonlinear viscoplastic body with the sixcomponent model. Comparing the model curves with test results, this model was determined to reflect the creep properties of silty mudstone accurately. Finally, the selection of the creep model parameters was achieved by considering the axial and lateral creep characteristics of silty mudstone.
게이미피케이션 디자인으로 온라인 교육 이용 만족도 향상 -참여도와 학습 효과의 중개 역할을 중심으로-

본 연구에는 게이미피케이션이 학습자 참여도, 학습 효과 및 만족도에 주는 영향과 참여도 및 학습 효과가 그 과정에서 나타내는 그중에서 맡는 조절 역할을 탐구하고자 한다. 한국 학부생과 대학원생 총 306명을 대상으로 양적 데이터를 획득한 후 구조방정식모형을 통하여 게이미피케이션, 학생 참여도, 학습 효과 및 만족도 간의 상호관계를 연구하였다. 연구 결과에 따라 게이미피케이션 다자인 요소 중 도전성과 흥미성이 학생의 참여도와 만족도에 직접적인 영향을 미치고, 도전성이 학습 효과에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 참여도와 학습 효율성은 게이미피케이션과 학생 만족도 간의 매개체이다. 온라인 교육은 게이미피케이션 디자인을 활용하여 학생들의 참여도, 만족도와 학습 유효성을 높일 수 있고 학생들에게 더 나은 학습 경험을 제공한다. 본 연구는 현재의 인터넷 배경에서 학생들의 학습 요구를 충족시키기 위해 온라인 교육에 중요한 시사점을 제공하였다. '놀이를 통하여 배운다'라는 교육 방식을 통해 더욱 활기차고 매력적인 학습 분위기를 만들어 학생들의 학습 경험과 전체 교육의 질을 향상시킬 수 있다. This study aimed to investigate the effects of gamification design on engagement, learning effectiveness, and satisfaction of students in higher education, and the moderating role of engagement and learning effectiveness therein. The study obtained quantitative data from 306 undergraduate and graduate students who participated in gamification design lectures in Korea. Structural equation modeling investigated the links between gamification design, student engagement, learning effectiveness, and satisfaction. The results indicated that the challenging and fun aspects of the gamification design elements directly influenced student engagement and satisfaction. In addition, the presence of challenges directly affects learning effectiveness. Engagement and learning effectiveness mediate the link between gamification design and student satisfaction. Online education can use gamification design to improve student engagement, satisfaction, and learning effectiveness. It results in a better learning experience for students. This study provides important insights for online education websites to meet the learning needs of students in the current Internet context. The use of gamification design creates a more dynamic and engaging learning environment, which enhances the student learning experience and the overall quality of education.
