This study was conducted to investigated the major characteristics of genetically modified rice of "Milyang 204" originated from Dongjinbyeo compared to a non-transgenic rice varieties Dongjinbyeo and Junambyeo. Basta resistant transgenic rice lines carrying bar gene produced by the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute were evaluated for their agronomic characters. The transgenic Japonica rice of "Milyang 204" showed inferior phenotypic traits compared to a non-transgenic rice variety Dongjinbyeo and Junambyeo. On the basis of UPOV (Union Internationale Pour la Protaection des Obtentions Vegetables) and NSMO(National Seed Management Office) the transgenic "Milyang 204" showed difference in some traits out of some agronomic traits, such as leaf color, angle of flag leaf, number of spikelets, culm length, white core and white belly compared to the nontransgenic varieties rice.
Methodology for Evaluating SBAS Satellite Correction
Han, Deok-Hwa,Kim, Dong-Uk,Kim, Jung-Beom,Kee, Chang-Don,Choi, Kwang-Sik,Han, Ji-Ae The Institute of Positioning 2018 Journal of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Vol.7 No.4
The Satellite-based Augmentation System (SBAS), as a safety critical system, should be verified on an ongoing basis to ensure the adequate performance. This study proposes two methods to evaluate the performance of SBAS satellite correction. Analysis methods based on precise ephemeris and measurement were applied to present an evaluation method for SBAS satellite correction, and a test was performed based on real data. The precise ephemeris-based analysis method had no limitations on the position of the test user and showed a high precision, enabling an accurate performance analysis in various positions. Although the measurement-based analysis method has the advantage of fast data interval, it showed a relatively lower accuracy due to the effects of various error factors. Compared with the precise ephemeris-based analysis method, there was a large difference of more than 5 m at the beginning of smoothing filter, and a difference less than 50 cm when filtered for more than an hour.

Background Alongside the extent of removal and patients’ survival in the management of brain tumors, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has become an important consideration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the change of HRQOL in brain tumor patients before and after surgery and to assess the associated factors that contribute to the change of HRQOL. Methods A total of 258 patients who underwent surgical treatment were enrolled in this study. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the 20-item EORTC QLQ-Brain Neoplasm (QLQ-BN20) were used to assess HRQOL. Patients were asked to fill out the questionnaires before and 3-6 months after surgery. Results Global QOL (p<0.001) and emotional function (p<0.018) were significantly improved after surgery. Physical function (p=0.015) was significantly aggravated. Among the symptoms, headache, pain and nausea and vomiting were significantly decreased (p<0.01, p=0.041, p<0.001, respectively), while dyspnea, communication deficit and weakness of the legs were increased (p=0.005, p=0.040, and p=0.014, respectively). Preoperative neurologic deficit (p=0.019) and tumor diameter (p=0.016) were significantly related to the patients who showed aggravation of global QOL after brain tumor surgery. In the aggravated global QOL group, common complaints and concerns included role function, appetite loss, financial difficulty and future uncertainty. Conclusion In brain tumor patients, HRQOL has improved after surgery. Role function, appetite loss, financial difficulty and future uncertainty were important factors for HRQOL in brain tumor patients treated with surgery. Although there is National Health Insurance and Medical Aid program in Korea, financial difficulty and future uncertainty are much more important in influencing QOL than previously thought. The results of this short-term follow up preliminary study suggest that several factors were related to HRQOL, Further research is needed to evaluate the long term change of HRQOL and enhance the global QOL by analyze related factors.
Is radical surgery for clinical stage I right-sided colon cancer relevant? A retrospective review
Han Deok Kwak,Jae Kyun Ju,Seung-Seop Yeom,Soo Young Lee,Chang Hyun Kim,Young Jin Kim,Hyeong Rok Kim 대한외과학회 2020 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.98 No.3
Purpose: Radical lymph node dissection for right-sided colon cancer is technically challenging. No clear guideline is available for surgical resection of clinical stage I right-sided colon cancer. This study was designed to review the pathologic stage of clinical stage I right-sided colon cancer and determine the relevant extent of surgical resection. Methods: Patients were treated for clinical stage I right-sided colon cancers (cecal, ascending, hepatic flexure, and proximal transverse colon) between July 2006 and December 2014 at a tertiary teaching hospital. Open surgery was not included because laparoscopic surgery is an initial major procedure in the institution. Results: During the study period, 80 patients diagnosed with clinical stage I right-sided colon cancer were classified into 2 groups according to the pathology: stage 0/I and II/III. Tumor sizes were larger in the stage II/III group (P = 0.003). The stage II/III group had higher rates of vascular (P = 0.023) and lymphatic invasion (P = 0.023) and lower rates of well differentiation (P = 0.022). During follow-up, 1 case of local and 4 cases of systemic recurrences were found. Multivariate analysis to confirm odds ratios affecting change from clinical stage I to pathological stage II/III showed that tumor size (P = 0.010) and the number of retrieved lymph nodes (P = 0.046) were risk factors. Conclusion: For right-sided colon cancer, even with clinical stage I included, radical lymph node dissection should be performed for exact staging with sufficient number of lymph nodes. This will help determine appropriate adjuvant treatment, especially in large tumor sizes
Rice Functional Genomics by Transposon Mutagenesis
Han, Chang-deok Plant molecular biology and biotechnology research 2002 Plant molecular biology and biotechnology research Vol.2002 No.-
Transposable elements are powerful mutagens. Along with genomic sequences, knock-out phenotypes and expression patterns are important information to elucidate function of genes. In this review, I propose a strategy to develop tranposant lines on a large scale by combining genetic cross and tissue culture of Ac and Ds lines. Based on the facts that Ds becomes reactivated via tissue culture of seeds carrying Ac and inactive Ds. In this review, describe limitation and considerations in operating transposon tagging systems in rice. Also, I discuss the efficiency of our gene trap system and technical procedures to clone Ds Flanking DNA.
IDD10 is Involved in the Interaction between NH4+ and Auxin Signaling in Rice Roots

NH4+ is an important nitrogen resource for rice plantsin paddy soil. Therefore, it is likely that NH4+-triggered plantgrowth interacts with phytohormone-mediated developmentalmechanisms. Our previous transcriptomic analysis revealedthat many genes involved in auxin signaling and efflux aresensitive to NH4+. In the current study, we found that NH4+treatment causes a delayed gravity response in rice roots. Tofurther elucidate the interlocking relationship between NH4+and auxin signaling during root development, we utilizedmutants and overexpressors of a key NH4+ signaling transcriptionfactor INDETERMINATE DOMAIN 10 (IDD10), encoding atranscription factor that regulates the expression of NH4+uptake and N-assimilation genes. We obtained several linesof evidence that auxin affects NH4+-mediated gene expressionand root development in rice plants via IDD10. First, thegravity response was delayed in idd10 roots and acceleratedin IDD10 overexpressor (IDD10 OX) roots in the absenceand (especially) presence of NH4+. Second, idd10 plantsshowed strong root coiling only in the presence of NH4+. However, treatment of 1-N-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA),a polar auxin transport inhibitor suppressed the NH4+-specific root phenotype of idd10. Third, the expression ofNH4+-responsive auxin-related genes was affected in idd10and IDD10 overexpressors. Finally, IDD10 expression wasinduced by IAA and suppressed by NPA. These findingssuggest that the gene expression patterns and phenotypestriggered by NH4+ are influenced by the actions of auxinduring root development, pointing to a regulatory circuitbetween NH4+ and auxin signaling that functions in rootdevelopment in rice.
