        Achieving Dual-Functionality by Surface Coating of Zeolite with Stearic Acid: Combining Breathability and Odor Control Properties in Polyethylene/Zeolite Composite Films

        This study was aimed at providing both water vapor permeability and hydrogen sulfide adsorption properties in polyethylene (PE) stretched films by using different amounts of natural zeolites. Firstly, zeolite was coated with 1%, 5%, and 7% stearic acid in a high shear mixer. Cup test, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and ash-oven analyses showed that a succesful coating was achieved. According to the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) gas adsorption and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) analyses, surface treatment with stearic acid didn’t change the particle size of the zeolite but lowered its hydrogen sulfide (H2S) adsorption capacity from 38.84±5.22 ppm/g sample (uncoated zeolite) to 17.26±2.54 ppm/g sample (7% coated zeolite). PE/zeolite (80/20 and 60/40 w/w) blown films were generated by using uncoated and 1%, 5%, and 7% stearic acid coated zeolites and then stretched. It was observed that the stearic acid coating of zeolite greatly improved the compatibility between polyethylene and zeolite resulting in films without pinholes generation after stretching (especially the 7% coated zeolite containing PE/zeolite (60/40 w/w) film). The usage of coated zeolite also improved mechanical properties by increasing the tensile strength and decreasing the elongation at break values. It was revealed that a loading amount of 40 wt% coated zeolite was necessary for achieving a sufficient breathability (658±4 and 1040±3 g/m2/day for 5% and 7% coated zeolite containing films, respectively). Odor removal capacity of the PE/zeolite (60/40 w/w) films was improved by 165% and 244% for the 5% and 7% coated zeolite containing samples, respectively.

        Study on the Granulation Behavior of TiO2-PVA Composite Powders Prepared Via Spray Drying Technique

        In this study, TiO2-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite granules were prepared via spray drying technique. To investigate the effects of solid content and binder/powder ratio in the slurry on the granulation behavior of TiO2 powders, the feed compositions were designed to vary over a wide range. The morphology, actual densities, and average granule size and size distribution of the TiO2-PVA composite granules were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy technique, a gas pycnometer, and an image analyzing program (Image-J), respectively. The results indicate that solid content and the amount of PVA in the feedstock slurry are the dominant factors determining the granule morphology, size, and size distribution of TiO2-PVA composite. Moreover, it was observed that increasing the solid content and the amount of PVA in the slurry improved the granulation process and reduced the granule defects. For the preparation of spherical TiO2-PVA composite granules with the minimum amount of non-granulated powders, the optimized composition of the feedstock slurry was found to be 35 wt.% solid and 3 wt.% PVA.

      • Manufacturing, Market Policy And Exports In Australia : Emulating The East Asian Economic Miracle?

        This paper considers industry policy and manufacturing in Australia by discussing the levels of tariffs and assistance by the Australian state. Australian policymakers have long been fascinated by the rise of East Asia and attempted to emulate a similar high-tech manufacturing industry via neo-liberal deregulation. Such a deregulation was of course was never part of the origin of the East Asian miracle until the 1980s. When it did occur however its effects soon became acutely visible in 1997-1998 across Asian economies. The paper does not discuss whether a singular East Asian economic model exists. Nor does it debate the validity of the project apparently contained in the government policy since the 1980s. More to the point, this paper raises the market policy movement that took inspiration from fixed perceptions of the East Asian economic miracle which was frequently (but not necessarily correctly) identified with neo-liberal deregulation. In the paper, the exports of elaborately transformed manufactures, especially during the Howard Coalition government (1996-2007) period, are analysed. What is Australia’s trade performance in such manufactures, including elaborately transformed manufactures? What is the debate on the current support mechanisms? Most importantly, what has the 1990s-2000s neo-liberal market governance achieved in Australia? The paper covers these questions and reflects on the nature of Australian manufacturing exports to Japan.

        Autologous blood injection to the temporomandibular joint : Magnetic resonance imaging findings

        Purpose : The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the autologous blood injection (ABI) for chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and Methods : ABI was applied to 14 patients who had chronic recurrent TMJ dislocation. MRIs of the patients were taken and compared before and one month after the injection. Results : All of the patients had no dislocations of their TMJs on clinical examination one month after the injection. In the pre-injection, unilateral or bilateral TMJ dislocations were observed on MRIs in all patients. One month after the injection, TMJ dislocations were not observed in MRI evaluation of any patients. A significant structural change that caused by ABI was not observed. Conclusion : The procedure was easy to perform and it caused no foreign body reaction. However, it was unclear how the procedure prevented the dislocation.

        Improving Empathy in Nursing Students

        Purpose: This study aimed to examine changes of empathy levels of nursing student in two different curricula structures, one called “traditional” and the other called “integrated” curricula. The study was a longitudinal design to follow a cohort of nursing students to examine the magnitude of changes in empathy in their education years. Methods: The study was conducted in a public school of nursing giving a baccalaureate degree, which had a fundamental change in their curricula. In all, 81 students from the traditional curricula and 66 students from the integrated curricula completed the study, and data from a total of 147 students were analyzed between 2003 and 2008. The Empathic Communication Skills Scale and the Empathic Tendency Scale were given to the students in the beginning of their freshman year and at the end of the fourth year just before graduation. Results: Although both of the curricula were seemed effective at improving empathic skills of students, especially the scores of students who completed the integrated curricula were higher than the scores of the other group attending the traditional curricula (p<.05). However, the empathic tendency scores of students in both curricula decreased at the end of fourth year. Conclusion: Although undergraduate nursing curricula either traditional or integrated improved empathic skills, it seemed that integrated curricula were more effective than traditional curricula in increasing empathic skills. The more hours and more experiential methods contributed to improved empathy. The decrease in empathic tendency requires further attention of educators and nurse managers.

      • Dry thermal development of negative electron beam resist polystyrene

        We report dry thermal development of negative resist polystyrene with low molecular weight. When developed on a hotplate at $350^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, polystyrene showed reasonable high contrast and resolution (30 nm half-pitch), but low sensitivity. Resist sensitivity was greatly improved at lower development temperatures, though at the cost of reduced contrast. In addition, we observed the thickness reduction due to thermal development was higher for larger remaining film thickness, implying the thermal development process is not just a surface process and the more volatile chains below the top surface may diffuse to the surface and get evaporated.
