        Ultrafine palladium nanoparticle-bonded to polyetheylenimine grafted reduced graphene oxide nanosheets: Highly active and recyclable catalyst for degradation of dyes and pigments

        Much attention has been increasingly focused on the applications of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) for the catalytic degradation of various dyes and pigments in industrial wastewater. We have demonstrated that Pd NPs/ Fe3O4-PEI-RGO nanohybrids exhibit high catalytic activity and excellent durability in reductive degradation of MO, R6G, RB. Specific surface area was successfully prepared by simultaneous reduction of Pd(OAc)2 chelating to PEI grafted graphene oxide nanosheets modified with Fe3O4. The as-prepared Pd NPs/Fe3O4-PEI-RGO nanohybrids were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-lambda 800 spectrophotometer, respectively. The catalytic activity of Pd NPs/Fe3O4-PEI-RGO nanohybrids to the degradation of MO, R6G, RB with NaBH4 was tracked by UV-visible spectroscopy. It was clearly demonstrated that Pd NPs/Fe3O4-PEI-RGO nanohybrids exhibited high catalytic activity toward the degradation of dyes and pigments, which could be relevant to the high surface areas of Pd NPs and synergistic effect on transfer of electrons between reduced graphene oxide (RGO), PEI and Pd NPs. Notably, Pd NPs/Fe3O4-PEI-RGO nanohybrids were easily separated and recycled thirteen times without obvious decrease in system. Convincingly, Pd NPs/Fe3O4-PEI-RGO nanohybrids would be a promising catalyst for treating industrial wastewater.

      • Streptomyces xinghaiensis sp. nov., isolated from marine sediment.

        <P>A novel actinomycete, strain S187(T), was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected from Xinghai Bay, Dalian, China. Growth occurred on ISP medium 2 containing 0-9 % NaCl and at pH 6.0-9.0 and 10-45 degrees C. The cell wall of strain S187(T) contained the isomer ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H(6)) (40.8 %), MK-9(H(8)) (38.2 %) and MK-9(H(2)) (8.8 %). The major fatty acids were iso-C(16 : 0) (29.6 %), anteiso-C(15 : 0) (14.0 %) and anteiso-C(17 : 0) (11.6 %). Cells contained phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides and one unknown phospholipid. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.01 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate had similarities of 98.1 and 97.5 % with those of Streptomyces flavofuscus NRRL B-8036(T) (=DSM 41426(T)) and Streptomyces albiaxialis DSM 41799(T), respectively, showing that the novel strain should be assigned to the genus Streptomyces. DNA-DNA hybridizations with the two above-mentioned Streptomyces species showed 31.4 and 46.9 % relatedness, respectively. Moreover, the three strains differed in some physiological and biochemical properties. Thus, on the basis of phenotypic and genotypic analyses, it is proposed that strain S187(T) represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces xinghaiensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is S187(T) (=NRRL B-24674(T)=CCTCC AA 208049(T)=KCTC 19546(T)).</P>

        A novel clocking effect between inlet bend and volute in an automotive turbocharging system

        Numerical methods were carried out on a turbocharger compressor with inlet bent pipe to research a novel clocking effect between the inlet bend and the volute. It was found that the clocking effect with 3.4 percent of variations (1.9 percentage points) in compressor efficiency positively exists at the research point near chock. The reason for the changed efficiency loss is that the inlet bend induces a serious distortion of approaching flow to impeller inlet on one hand, and the downstream volute causes a circumferentially non-uniform distribution of pressure in vaneless diffuser. By adjusting the clocking positions between inlet bend and volute, not only is the unsteadiness of the flow rate through single impeller channel changed, but the uniformity of the incoming flow at the vaneless diffuser inlet is modulated as well. It is the dominant reason for the novel clocking effect that the bad uniformity causes more flow loss in both diffuser and volute.

        Cordycepin inhibits chondrocyte hypertrophy of mesenchymal stem cells through PI3K/Bapx1 and Notch signaling pathway

        Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are widely used in cartilage tissue engineering to repair articular cartilage defects. However, hypertrophy of chondrocytes derived from MSCs might hinder the stabilization of hyaline cartilage. Thus, it is very important to find a suitable way to maintain the chondrogenic phenotype of chondrocytes. It has been reported that cordycepin has anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor functions. However, the role of cordycepin in chondrocyte hypertrophy remains unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of cordycepin on chondrogenesis and chondrocyte hypertrophy in MSCs and ATDC5 cells. Cordycepin upregulated chondrogenic markers including Sox9 and collagen type II while down-regulated hypertrophic markers including Runx2 and collagen type X. Further exploration showed that cordycepin promoted chondrogenesis through inhibiting Nrf2 while activating BMP signaling. Besides, cordycepin suppressed chondrocyte hypertrophy through PI3K/Bapx1 pathway and Notch signaling. Our results indicated cordycepin had the potential to maintain chondrocyte phenotype and reconstruct engineered cartilage. [BMB Reports 2016; 49(10): 548-553]

        Blood-compatible Polyaniline Coated Electrospun Polyurethane Fiber Scaffolds for Enhanced Adhesion and Proliferation of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

        The endothelialization and anti-thrombotic abilities of tissue engineered vascular scaffolds are considered to be effective properties for improving the performance small-caliber vascular scaffolds. For this purpose, we designed and developed electrically conductive fibrous scaffolds based on polyaniline coated polyurethane (PANI-PU) electrospun fibersfor vascular tissue engineering applications. The porosity of PANI-PU fibers was 75.27±2.04 %. The obtained PANI-PU fibers were characterized by SEM observations, XPS analysis, water contact angle (WCA) measurement and mechanical property. The PANI functionalization aimed to improve the performance of anticoagulation and endothelialization. The WCA of PAIN-PU decreased to 35 o from 135 o of PU fibers. Blood compatibility and cytocompatibility were compared before and after PANI coating. The adhered platelet cells on PANI-PU was 6.87×105/cm2 and plasma recalcification time was 123 s. Platelet adhesion and plasma recalcification time test showed that the PANI-PU scaffolds had a certain anticoagulant effect. The hemolysis rate of PANI-PU fibers was 0.14 %, which showed that the PANI-PU scaffolds could be used as blood contact materials. The observation of endothelial cell proliferation and morphology in human umbilical vein endothelial cells showed that PANI-PU fibers were more beneficial to cell adhesion, proliferation and extension than that of PU fibers. The results demonstrates the PANI coated electrospun PU fibers have great potential in application as small-diameter vascular grafts and this work shows new insights into conductive scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering.

        Isolation, Structural Characterization, and Lymphopoiesis Stimulant Activity of a Polysaccharide from the Abalone Gonad

        A novel polysaccharide (AGP-32) from the gonad of Haliotis discus hannai Ino was isolated using a protease-assisted process and successive ion-exchange and gel-filtration chromatography. The backbone of AGP-32 was determined using hydrolysis with trifluoroacetic acid. FTIR, NMR, and methylation analysis, and periodate oxidation and Smith degradation analysis revealed that the AGP-32 backbone mainly consisted of (1→6)-linked mannose, (1→3)-linked galactose, and (1→3)-linked glucose in a proportion of 2:3:1. An in vitro cell assay indicated that AGP-32 promoted mice splenic lymphocyte proliferation by 26% at a concentration of 50 μg/mL. AGP-32 had an effect on immune protection and is a candidate for consideration as a functional food.

      • Simultaneous Modulated Accelerated Radiation Therapy and Concurrent Weekly Paclitaxel in the Treatment of Locally Advanced Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

        Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of simultaneous accelerated radiation therapy (SMART) and concurrent weekly paclitaxel in the treatment of locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: Forty-one patients with pathologically confirmed nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated by SMART with concurrent weekly paclitaxel. Daily fraction doses of 2.5 Gy and 2.0 Gy were prescribed to the gross tumor volume (GTV) and clinical target volume (CTV) to a total dose of 70 Gy and 56 Gy, respectively. Paclitaxel of $45mg/m^2$ was administered concurrently with radiation therapy every week. Adjuvant chemotherapy was given four weeks after the completion of the radiotherapy (RT) if the tumor demonstrated only a partial response (PR). Results: All patients completed the radiotherapy (RT) course. Adjuvant chemotherapy was administered to 12 patients due to PR. The CR (complete remission) rate was 82.9% three months after RT. Thirty-nine (95.1%) patients completed the concurrent weekly chemotherapy with paclitaxel, and two patients skipped their sixth course. Seven patients had a 15% dosage reduction at the fifth and sixth course due to grade 3 mucositis. The median follow-up was 30 (range, 14-42) months. The three-year overall survival (OS), metastases-free survival (MFS), and local control rates were 77.0%, 64.4%, and 97.6%, respectively. No correlation between survival rate and T or N stage was observed. Grade 3 acute mucositis and xerostomia were present in 17.1% and 7.1%, respectively. Conclusion: SMART with concurrent weekly paclitaxel is a potentially effective and toxicity tolerable approach in the treatment of locally advanced NPC.

        Kinetic Models of Controllable Pore Growth of Anodic Aluminum Oxide Membrane

        An anodized Al2O3 (AAO) membrane with apertures about 72 nm in diameter was prepared by two-step anodic oxidation. The appearance and pore arrangement of the AAO membrane were characterized by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was confirmed that the pores with high pore aspect ratio were parallel, well-ordered, and uniform. The kinetics of pores growth in the AAO membrane was derived, and the kinetic models showed that pores stopped developing when the pressure (σ) trended to equal the surface tension at the end of anodic oxidation. During pore expansion,the effects of the oxalic acid concentration and expansion time on the pore size were investigated, and the kinetic behaviors were explained with two kinetic models derived in this study. They showed that the pore size increased with extended time (r=G·t+G’), but decreased with increased concentration (r=−K·lnc -K’)through the derived mathematic formula. Also, the values of G, G’,K, and K’ were derived from our experimental data.
