Translators and Revisers: Toward More Collaboration

Carolyn Scheer 한국통역번역학회 2003 통역과 번역 Vol.5 No.2

The prevailing wisdom dictates that a translator should work into his/her own language (L1). In Korea, however, the prevailing wisdom does not match the reality. With the demand for into-English translations burgeoning, Korea is faced with a problem: Because few English speakers take up Korean language studies, and even fewer go on to become translators, only a handful of foreigners are working in the K-E translation market, and those are mainly literary translators. To make matters worse, very few Korean-speaking translators can produce high-quality English texts independently. They must rely on native-speakers to check and revise their work. Given Korea’s unique situation in which Koreans must translate Korean into English, the translator and reviewer should work as a collaborative team to produce high-quality English translations. The paper will review prior research, look at findings of the study and then establish a methodology that translators and revisers can follow to produce a quality L2 product.

Global pressures on education research: quality, utility, and infrastructure

        Carolyn D. Herrington,Katherine P. Summers 서울대학교 교육연구소 2014 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.15 No.3

This article provides an overview of issues likely to drive educational research globally over the next decade, and it examines the Asia Pacific Education Review (APER)’s role in respon ding to these issues, shaping research agendas, and delivering high-quality research. We also look at the implications of these pressures, along with changes in the academic infrastructure, regarding the form, distribution, quality, and utility of education research. We focus on three pressures in particular: a new demography of education, the changing technology of education, and the expansion of higher education and the research university. Demographic pr essures create demand for new and different types of institutional responses and have created a new set of issues in education. Technological innovations promise to challenge current systems. MOOCs, web-based professional development for adults, mobile learning, and web-based performance supports for younger students will alter the physical, intellectual, and learning environments of higher education. How might these developments affect the infrastructure of academic research? Quality control will become even more central. It is a strength of academe, something which research institutions are particularly well designed to conduct. Growth in the higher education sector has been accompanied by equally unprecedented growth in research programs, research-trained faculty, and researchoriented universities. This, in turn, has produced pressure for more publications and journals. We conclude with a discussion of how the educational research community will likely respond to these challenges and the role of APER in this process.

Ultrasonography of adnexal causes of acute pelvic pain in pre-menopausal non-pregnant women

        Carolyn S, Dupuis,김영환 대한초음파의학회 2015 ULTRASONOGRAPHY Vol.34 No.4

Acute-onset pelvic pain is an extremely common symptom in premenopausal women presentingto the emergency department. After excluding pregnancy in reproductive-age women, ultrasonography plays a major role in the prompt and accurate diagnosis of adnexal causesof acute pelvic pain, such as hemorrhagic ovarian cysts, endometriosis, ovarian torsion, andtubo-ovarian abscess. Its availability, relatively low cost, and lack of ionizing radiation makeultrasonography an ideal imaging modality in women of reproductive age. The primary goal ofimaging in these patients is to distinguish between adnexal causes of acute pelvic pain thatmay be managed conservatively or medically, and those requiring emergency/urgent surgical orpercutaneous intervention.

Representations of Gender Inequality and Women’s Issues in Philippine Feminist Discourses

        Carolyn I. SOBRITCHEA 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2005 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.11 No.2

The dynamic women’s movements of the Philippines in Southeast Asia are composed of women from various social classes, ideological orientations, religious affiliations and occupational groups. This paper is a preliminary attempt to undertake an anthropology of feminist knowledge as I examine the representations of gender inequality, the empirical articulations of women’s oppression, and their influence in the directions and dynamics of feminist theorizing. Narratives or texts about women’s/ gender issues are embedded in many kinds of writing – in research reports, creative works, in designs of development programs, in advocacy materials, training manuals and so on. I argue here that the development of many discursive sites for the interrogation of marginality has been responsible for the advances as well as drawbacks, the many bases of unity as well as tensions, among feminists in non-government organizations, in academe and in people’s organizations. Narratives or texts about women’s/ gender issues are embedded in many kinds of writing – in research reports, creative works, in designs of development programs, in advocacy materials, training manuals and so on. In other words, the discourse has gone beyond feminist academic circles to include feminists in development and advocacy work. I try to provide a brief overview of the important historical events in the birth and subsequent growth of what is often referred to in feminist circles as the second wave of women’s movement. This provides a useful backdrop for understanding the contents and trajectory of the many and diverse ideas put forward by Filipino feminists.

Safely navigating kidney transplantation during the COVID-19 pandemic: the Singapore General Hospital’s experience

        Carolyn Shan-Yeu Tien,Ian Tatt Liew,Quan Yao Ho,Sobhana Thangaraju,Maslinna Binte Abdul Rahman,Constance Lee,Nicole Chelsi Xin Hui Leah,Xia He,Li Ting Siew,Terence Yi Shern Kee 대한이식학회 2023 Korean Journal of Transplantation Vol.37 No.2

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic curtailed transplant activities worldwide, driven by concerns about increased COVID-19-related mortality among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs), infections originating from donors, and decreased availability of surgical and intensive care resources as healthcare resources are reallocated for pandemic response. We examined the outcomes of KTRs at our center before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted a retrospective single-center cohort study examining the characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing kidney transplantation during two periods: January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2019 (pre-COVID-19 era) and January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2022 (COVID-19 era). We reviewed perioperative and COVID-19 infection-related outcomes in both groups. Results: A total of 114 transplants were performed during the pre-COVID-19 era, while 74 transplants were conducted during the COVID-19 era. No differences in baseline demographics were observed. Additionally, there were no significant differences in perioperative outcomes, except for a longer cold ischemia time during the COVID-19 era. However, this did not result in an increased incidence of delayed graft function. Among the KTRs infected with COVID-19 during the pandemic era, no severe complications such as pneumonia, acute kidney injury, or death were reported. Conclusions: With the global transition to an endemic phase of COVID-19, it is imperative to revitalize organ transplant activities. Effective containment workflow, good vaccination uptake, and prompt COVID-19 treatment are essential to ensure that transplants can proceed safely.

      • A study on the factors affecting performance assessment and budget allocation of sports programs: Focusing on Korea Sports Promotion Foundation Funded programs

( Carolyn Yoonhee Park ),( Yoonji Ryu ),( Jongho Kim ),( Kihan Kim ) 한국체육학회 2016 국제스포츠과학 학술대회 Vol.2016 No.1

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between program performance assessment and budget allocation of KSPF sponsored programs. From the path dependency point of view, the author anticipates that not the performance rating but the size of program budget and period of program to be significant determinant to next year budget. Thus, this paper attempts to identify following research question: "Does performance rating of sport business programs influence budget allocation?" The hypothesis to this question is that the result of previous year``s program performance rating(good, fair, poor) would not influence on next year``s budget allocation(increase, maintenance, cutback). Method: This study adopts the measures of multivariable regression analysis, in order to capture determinant of program performance rating and to see whether the mark of performance influences next year``s budget size or not. To investigate said relationship, this paper considers the size of the program budget, period of program, beneficiary’s satisfaction, and type of executing agency as determinants of performance rating and budgeting. Result: The results and detailed discussion will be presented at the conference. Conclusion: Overall, this study suggests the importance of relationship between program performance assessment and budget allocation. As the purpose of performance evaluation system is to improve the quality, program feedback system is important. Therefore, it is important to make strong linkage between the result of performance evaluation and program budget.
