        Yin-ke Chen, from Yi-ning, Jiang-shi in China, was not only a history specialist but also a knowledgeable master in Chinese Classics. His statements on the memorial of Guan-tang Wang from Ching-hua University says, ”The study principle for a learned person is to glorify truth by freeing the mind from the control of the secularity. I’d rather die without the freedom of thought.” It is clear to see from his life that he was a typical figure, with the thoughts of freedom, who faced spiritual and physical frustration when there was a political reformation in China. However, the political constraint could never change his strong mind toward the insistence on free will and independent spirit. A huge number of his poems express his persistent spirit on culture. To explore this spirit, his poems are provided in this study

        In the nineteenth century, any ideology introduced from the West to mainland China was always characterized by the Chineseness, including nationalism. Before and after the revolution to overthrow the Qing dynasty, due to various situation changes, Dr. Sun Yat-sen had different interpretations of the content of his minzuzhuyi(nationalism). The Chinese tradition and openness of interpretation of Dr. Sun’s national thought, therefore, would make conflictions with western nationalism, and brought competitions between the Cross-Strait to be the only successor of Dr. Sun’s thought. This article will explore the developments and challenges of Dr. Sun’s nationalism, and how to race for dominating the interpretations of his thought between Taiwan and the mainland China.

      • A nonNMDA antagonist, GYKI 52466 improves microscopic O₂balance in the cortex during focal cerebral ischemia

A non-NMDA antagonist, GYKI 52466 improves microscopic O² balance in the cortex during focal cerebral ischemia. Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 172-182, 1999.-This study was performed to test whether GYKI 52466, a non-NMDA receptor antagonist, would improve microregional oxygen supply and consumption balance in the focal cerebral ischemic area. Rats were anesthetized with 1.4% isoflurance. For the GYKI Group (n=8), 19 min before middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion, a bolus of 5mg/kg of GYKI 52466 iv was administered and was followed by an infusion of 5mg/kg/hr. For the control Group(n=8), the same volume of the vehicle was administered. One hour after MCA occlusion, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured using the 14C-iodoantipyrine autoradiographic technique. Microscopic arterial and venous oxygen saturations were determined using microspectrophotometry. In the cortex contralateral to MCA occlusion, the average rCBF and the average O² consumption were lower in the GYKI Group than in the Control Group (rCBF:GYKI 65.5±24.1, Control 97.7 33.4ml/100g/min;O² consumption: GYKI3.9±1.2, Control 6.2±2.5ml O²/100g/min) without a significant difference in the number of veins with SvO²<50%. In the ischemic cortex, the number of veins with SvO²<50% was significantly smaller in the GYKI Group (21 veins out of 63)than in the Control Group(45 out of 59)without a significant difference in the average rCBF(GYKI44.9±17.7, Control 29.7±10.4) or regional O² consumption between these two groups (GYKI 3.3±1.4,Control 27.7±1.2). Our data demonstrated that GYKI 52466 was effective in improving microscopic O² balance in the focal ischemic cortical area of the brain and it decreased O² consumption in the non-ischemic cortex.         韓愈古文的實詞作法

        This article aims to discuss shici (or real word in literal meaning) in Han Yu’s classical prose. The term “shici,” here is applied in contrast to “xuci,” (empty word in literal meaning, or functional word, or structural particle in linguistics terminology). In the first place, we, by means of accumulating theoretical criteria on shici usage, represented by Han Yu himself, his posterity, and contemporary scholars, will examine whether Han Yu has a special contribution on shici, or not? Besides close textual reading, I make reference back to works on pingdianxue (extra-textual commentary study) of successive dynasties, these works include some considerably stylistic modes, which have ever been raised by former literati, and then try to epitomize the treatment of shici by Han Yu in his classical prose. In overall, his use of shici shows us some cases as follows: (1) penetrating over all prose by virtue of shici, (2) his own innovation of shici, (3) his accurate paraphrase by shici, (4) conveying spirit by a single shici, (5) revitalizing obsolete word by shici, (6) Not in the case of consecutive use, in different places in the article using the same shici. With analytical approach of various shici examples, and theirs usage in classical prose structure, it helps us reaffirm his artistic value on Chinese literature.

Proceedings of international Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 44-64, 1999.-Cordyceps sinensis is a major parasitic fungus on larva of Lepidoptera. It is one of the well know fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment asthma, lung and kideney diseases. Many fungi belonging to the genus Cordyceps have been demonstrated to produce natural products with various biological activities. Reported biological activities of genus cordyceps include:(a)inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis;(b)enhancement of cell differentiation;(c)restruction of cytoskeleton;(d)inhibition of protein kinase activity;(e)antitumor activity on bladder, colon, lung carcinoma as well as fibroblastoma;(f)inhibition of the infection and revers transciptase activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1; and(g) inhibition of methylation of nucleic acid. Thus, it is suggested that the extracts of Cordyceps sp. Contain antitumor, antiviral, and many other biological activities. In our previous studies, we proved that C. sinensis contains the antitumor and immunomodulatory agents. In the present studies, effects of C. sinensis on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids(BAL)cells were demonstrated. The crude methanolic extracts of C. sinensis were fractionated into 15 fractions by silica gel column chromatography. Effects of various fraction on BAL cells proliferation and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) stimulated interleukin-1β(IL-8),platelet activating factor(PAF), interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-8(IL-8) production on BAL cells were determined. The result indicated that the CS-19-22 fraction suppressed BAL cells proliferation activated by LPS. The median inhibitory concentration(IC50) was 6㎍/ml. The CS-19-22 fraction also decreased IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-αand IL-8 production.The results of revers transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) demonstrated that the CS-19-22 fraction did not affect IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-α,and IL-8 mRNAs expression in BAL cells activated by LPS. By contrast, it inhibited the IL-10 mRNA expression but enhanced IFN-γand IL-12 mRNAs expression in activated BAL cells. Moreover, the CS-19-22 fraction blocked PAF-induced platelet aggregation. It is unlikely that cytotoxicity was involved. Because no cell deths were observable. We hypothesize that inhibitory mechanisms of CS-19-22 on BAL cells proliferation may be related to the impairments of gene expression and production of cytokines in BAL cells. The explanation of C. sinensis antiasthma function may involved the following(1)C.sinenesis contained immunomodulatory agents that stimulated IFN-γand IL-12 expression in TH1cells.(2)Enhanced secretion of IFN-γand IL-12 will inhibit the Tγcells immune responses Ex. Decreasing of IL-6 and IL-10 production.(3) The impairments of cytokines production in TH2 cells suppressed th BAL cells proliferation then more cytokines production Ex.IL-1β,PAF,IL-6,TNF-αand IL-8 in activated BAL cells were decreased. (4)The suppression of TH2cells immune responses will inhibit the growth and differentiation of B cells then IgE production will be decreased. (5)Reduced production of IgE will decreased asthma attack occurring in individuals. However, the results of the present study suggested that C. sinensis may also have acted to treat asthma in part by inhibiting BAL cells proliferation and cytokine gene expression and production. Future, experiments with treatment of animals with asthma with C. sinensis will be necessary to defined whether C. sinensis can reduce asthma injury. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure principal growth inhibitors and their mechanisms of action are subjected for further study.

        Boundaries of the Amurian Plate identified using multiple geophysical methods

        One of the most topical issues regarding the recent geodynamics of Eastern Asia is identifying the boundaries of the Amurian (AM) block, it has great significance to research the relationship between the Northeast Asia and the Pacific Plate. In this study, continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) measurement data from Northeast China, Southeast Russia, the Korean Peninsula (KP) and Eastern Mongolia are used to calculate the velocity field and Euler pole. The results show that the two sides of the Tanlu fault zone have different velocity directions and Euler centers. And the movement velocity and rotation velocity of the two blocks are different. Chi-square (χ2) statistics indicate significant relative movement between the AM and KP blocks, confirming that they are generally independent and do not belong to the same block. The focal mechanism solutions and energy release indicate that Tanlu fault zone is a large dextral strike-slip fault, there are many deep-focus earthquakes, shallow-focus earthquakes and volcanic earthquakes in this fault zone, which release a lot of energy. Under the strong pushing of the Pacific plate, the KP block is forced to changed direction from SEE to SE along the Tanlu fault zone. These comprehensive calculations show that the AM and KP blocks are two mutually independent blocks, the boundary between them is the Tanlu fault zone.

        현실인식으로서의 드라마 : Studie von Rilkes Dramen 릴케의 드라마 연구

        Rainer Maria Rilke ist einer der bekanntesten und zugleich am meisten interpretierten deutschen Dichter. Aber seine Dramen bekommen von den Lesem und Wissenschaftlem bis jetzt nur wenige Aufmerksamkeit. Aber Rilkes Dramen, die ausschließlich in seiner fru¨heren Schaffensperiode gedichtet worden sind, weisen schon auf die ganze Charakterristik seiner Werke hin. Am Anfang hat Rilke mit dem Psychodrama und dann gleich mit dem naturalistischen Drama angefangen. Er wolte mit dem naturalistischen Drama die gesellschaftlichen Probleme besser kritisieren. In Prag, wo zwar der Naturalismus nicht genug verbreitet war, schaffte Rilke doch hervorragende naturalistische Werke mit typisch naturalistischen Theme und Stoffen. Mit den naturalistischen Themen konnte Rilke aber nicht genug ausdru¨ckn, was er eigentlich darstellen wollte.. Er wollte nicht nur das au¨ßere Leben, sondern auch die innere Bewegung des Menschen herauskristalisieren. Maeterlick was in diesem Sinne von großer Bedeutung. Rilke hat unter dem Einfluß von Maeterlink eine Reihe von bedeutsamen symbolischen Dramen geschrieben. Aber weder das naturalistische noch das symbolistische Drama konnte ihn befriedigen. Mit dem symbolistischen Drama, das ur an die innere Seele interessiert ist, konnte er sein unbegrenztes Vertrauen in die Macht der Kunst icht genug ausdru¨cken. Schließlich verla¨ßt er das Drama und gehr in die lyrische Welt hinein.

        막스 프리쉬의 드라마이론

        Die vorliegende Arbeit hat den Begriff ,,Umschreibung,, zum Gegenstand der Untersuchung, um schließlich aufgrund dessen die poetologische Konzeption Max Frischs aufschließen zu konnen. Nach Frisch ist das eignetliche Leben ,,eine Allgegenwart alles Moglichen,,. Aber in der Realitat ist das Wesen des Menschen in ein ,,Nacheinander,, zerlegt. Aber uber die Mogliche Zusammenfugung der beiden zeitlichen Dimension in der Realitat weiß Frisch kaum etwas zu sagen. Nur sieht er in der Dichtung annahrend die Moglichkeit. Was er mit seiner Dichtung darstellt, ist darum nicht die Geschichte, die mit Daten und Fakten belegt und damit sukzessiv angeordnet ist, sondern eine denkbare, mogliche und spielbare Geschichte personlicher Erfahrung. Um dieses Erlebnismuster darstellen zu konnen, bedarf Frisch der Technik der ,,Umschreibung,,, die im Grunde nicht anderes besagt, als eine Geschichte zu schreiben, die unmittelbar von sich aus ablehnt, eine Geschichte zu sein. Und gerade dadurch, daß die Umschreibung die Verbindlichkeit der Geschichte als eine Tauschung entlarvt, wird die Geschichte am Ende relativiert, schließlich negiert und wieder zum Ausgangspunkt zuruckgebracht.
