<P>Over the past decade, vertical nanostructures have provided novel approaches for biomedical applications such as intracellular delivery/detection, specific cell capture, membrane potential measurement, and cellular activity regulation. Although the feasibility of the vertical nanostructures as a new biological tool has been thoroughly demonstrated, a better understanding of cell behavior on vertical nanostructures, in particular the effects of geometry, is essential for advanced applications. To investigate the cell behavior according to the variation of the spacing between vertical nanostructures, we have interfaced fibroblasts (NIH3T3) with density-controlled vertical silicon nanocolumn arrays (vSNAs). Over a wide range of vSNA densities, we observe three distinct cell settling regimes and investigate both overall cell behavior (adhesions, morphology, and mobility) and detailed biomacromolecule variance (F-actin and focal adhesion) across these regimes. We expect that these systematic observations could serve as a guide for improved nanostructure array design for the desired cell manipulation.</P>

Similar to Chile in the 1990s, Slovenia has introduced an unremunerated reserve requirement(URR) on financial credits in 1995. We find that the URR has not been effective in reducing overall inflows of foreign capital. Hence, the gain in monetary autonomy has been limited. While the overall structure of capital inflows has not differed decidedly from that of other transition economies, Slovenia has raised less short-term bank credit from abroad. Moreover, there are indications that the volatility of exchange rates has declined after the imposition of the URR while the volatility of capital flows has increased

Since low serum l-arginine (Arg) and high asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) can predict microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), we tested whether Arg and ADMA are affected by diet and physical activity in overweight/obese and T2DM subjects. We tested the effects on serum Arg and ADMA of single loads of dextrose, protein, fat, or alcohol (∼300 calories each); one episode of physical exercise; and 12 weeks of standard lifestyle modification (dietary and physical activity counseling). Alcohol drink was followed by ∼30% lowering in Arg. Arg and ADMA increased after a protein load but remained stable after glucose or fat load or 30 min of treadmill walk. Following 12 weeks of lifestyle modification, ADMA declined only in subjects achieving weight loss >5%. In conclusion, alcohol is a previously unrecognized acute suppressor of serum Arg. Lifestyle modification lowers ADMA in subjects who achieve weight loss >5%. Clinical Trial Registration Number: NCT04406402.

Epimorphic regeneration in vertebrates involves the restoration of lost tissue or organs through the formation of a regeneration blastema and occurs through a complex interaction of a number of molecular signaling pathways. Of the many effectors of successful tail regeneration in the lizard Hemidactylus flaviviridis, one crucial pathway is the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mediated PGE2 signaling pathway. The current study was aimed at understanding whether COX-2 signaling plays any role in the expression of Wnt/b-Catenin signaling components during regenerative outgrowth in H. flaviviridis. Etoricoxib—selective inhibitor of the inducible isoform of COX-2—was administered to lizards orally. We tested the expression of b-Catenin during wound epidermis and blastema stages in the regenerating tail and found a reduction in its expression in response to drug treatment. Further, it was observed that the expression of canonical Wnt ligands was greatly altered due to COX-2 inhibition. Our results provide evidence of a cross-talk between the COX-2 induced PGE2 pathway and Wnt/b-Catenin signaling in the regenerating lizard tail. An understanding of the interaction among various signaling pathways will help elucidate the mechanism underlying epimorphosis in lizards, the only amniotes capable of appendage regeneration.
Triticum aestivum (Wheatgrass) formulation: An alternate treatment for the patients with Thalassemia

We have developed the tablet formulation of Triticum aestivum (wheatgrass) and investigated clinically, its effects in patients suffering from b-thalassemia (major) at K. T. Children Hospital, Civil Hospital, Rajkot. The tablets (wheatgrass powder 250 mg.) were given 3 times in a day for 9 months. Blood samples were collected at the start, after 6 months and 9 months and analyzed for various biochemical and hematological parameters. Treatment with wheatgrass formulation for 9 months produced significant decrease in hemoglobin, total RBC, eosinophil and reticulocyte counts. The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were significantly increased was significantly increased. The serum ferritin was also significantly decreased. There was no influence on serum magnesium, serum iron and Thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS). Our data indicate that treatment with wheatgrass on patients with $\beta$-thalassemia (major) may have beneficial effects in the form of a decrease in ineffective erythropoiesis, stimulation of hemoglobin synthesis in RBC, decrease in iron load and decrease in eosinophil count.

Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) is an invasive technique used during the surgical management of medically refractory epilepsy. The utility of SEEG rests in its ability to survey the three-dimensional organization of the epileptogenic zone as well as nearby eloquent cortices. Once concentrated to specialized centers in Europe and Canada, the SEEG methodology has gained worldwide popularity due to its favorable morbidity profile, superior coverage of deep structures, and ability to perform multi-lobar explorations without the need for craniotomy. This rapid shift in practice represents both a challenge and an opportunity for pediatric neurosurgeons familiar with the subdural grid approach. The purpose of this review is to discuss the indications, technique, and safety of long-term SEEG monitoring in children. In addition to reviewing the conceptual and technical points of the diagnostic evaluation, attention will also be given to SEEG-based interventions (e.g., radiofrequency thermo-coagulation).
