Regional Integration Agreements, Trade Flows and Economic Crisis: A Static and Dynamic Gravity Model

Bassem Kahouli 한국국제경제학회 2016 International Economic Journal Vol.30 No.4

Regional trade agreements (RTA) strengthening is a crucial component of the contemporary global economy. These agreements are considered beneficial in many senses (economics: trade, FDI, growth, etc.) and are a stabilizing factor in international relations (politics). In this paper, I study the effects of RTAs on exports between members and non-members taking into account the Viner specification. I also try to estimate the effect of the recent economic crisis on the export flows and achievement of RTAs. I use a static and dynamic gravity model to 40 countries belonging to 6 heterogeneous RTAs for the period 1980–2011. This model is estimated taking into account the latest estimation techniques that treats endogeneity effects of integration and the existence of dynamic effect.

Effect of structure configurations and wind characteristics on the design of solar concentrator support structure under dynamic wind action

Bassem Kaabia,Sébastien Langlois,Sébastien Maheux 한국풍공학회 2018 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.27 No.1

Concentrated Solar Photovoltaic (CPV) is a promising alternative to conventional solar structures. These solar tracking structures need to be optimized to be competitive against other types of energy production. In particular, the selection of the structural parameters needs to be optimized with regards to the dynamic wind response. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the main structural parameters, as selected in the preliminary design phase, on the wind response and then on the weight of the steel support structure. A parametric study has been performed where parameters influencing dynamic wind response are varied. The study is performed using a semi-deterministic time-domain wind analysis method. Unsteady aerodynamic model is applied for the shape of the CPV structure collector at different configurations in conjunction with a consistent mass-spring-damper model with the corresponding degrees of freedom to describe the dynamic response of the system. It is shown that, unlike the static response analysis, the variation of the peak wind response with many structural parameters is highly nonlinear because of the dynamic wind action. A steel structural optimization process reveals that close attention to structural and site wind parameters could lead to optimal design of CPV steel support structure.

Experimental and numerical study on the tensile, three-point-bending, and interlaminar fracture toughness of GLARE

        Bassem Dahshan,Abdel-Halim M. El-Habbak,Mahmoud A. Adly,Mostafa Shazly 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.8

Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are a special type of composite structure consisting of metal sheets bonded to composite laminas. The current study investigated the effect of the replacement of cross-ply (0/90 ◦ ) glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminas with woven glass fiber reinforced polyester laminas in GLARE laminates on the tensile, bending and interlaminar fracture toughness of the laminate. Test results showed that the existence of woven glass fiber laminas increased the tensile strength with a decrease in corresponding strain, the flexure strength decreased significantly due to the existence of polyester instead of epoxy resin, and the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness increased. ABAQUS® software was used to simulate the tests, and ductile damage was employed to detect the failure of aluminum layers, the Hashin failure criteria to model the failure of composite layers in the laminate, and the cohesive surface interaction to capture delamination between layers.

      • Chinese Veto Power in the UN Security Council and Dealing with the Syrian Issue

BASSEM KHALED ABDELSALAM ELMAGHRABY 동덕여자대학교 한중미래연구소 2018 한중미래연구 Vol.10 No.-

This paper aims to display how China uses its veto power in the UN Security Council in general and to compare the Chinese perspective in using its veto power with the actual Chinese dealing in the Syrian case. In general, China has exercised its veto right to protect its interests and achieve certain goals such as improvement of its image as a responsible power in the global context. With regard to the Syrian situation, China has used its veto power, jointly with Russia, six times to abolish resolutions related to Syria by taking into account the neutrality. Findings are as follows. First, with the international issues in the UN Security Council China’s deal has been hampered by the motivations of other countries, which were subject significantly to their political interests, at the voting process. Second, the use of a veto power by the core members of the UN Security Council often became a tool for the implementation of their national interests at the expense of a violation of the UN Charter.

X-Ray CT scanning imaging for the Nubia sandstone as a tool for characterizing its capillary properties

        Bassem S. Nabawy,Christian David 한국지질과학협의회 2016 Geosciences Journal Vol.20 No.5

The Nubia sandstone is among the most important aquifers/reservoirs system in and around the Gulf of Suez province in Egypt. It is composed of very fine to coarse siliceous highly porous sandstone. It can be differentiated into four formations, named Araba, Naqus, Abu Durba and Malha. The capillary imbibition properties of the Nubia sandstone have been studied using two different techniques: 1) Increasing mass against time and 2) X-Ray CT scanning imaging. Both methods are valuable in characterizing the different capillary properties of the studied rocks, i.e., the coefficient of capillary ‘C’ (measured in g/(cm2.s1/2) using the first method and the capillary parameter ‘A’ (measured in cm/s1/2) using the second one. In addition, porosity (17.7 to 23.5%) was measured using two techniques: 1) Water saturation under vacuum, and 2) mercury injection ‘MICP’ under high pressure. The mercury injection test indicated homogeneity in the pore throat distribution of the studied samples. Liquid permeability (41.6 to 374.2 md) was measured using water flow; it is very good to excellent and mostly controlled by the rock porosity and average pore throat diameter. Both capillary parameters ‘A’ and ‘C’ show a positive correlation with permeability. On a limited set of samples the anisotropy linked to pore fabric could be estimated.

Excellent Laundry Detergent Compatibility and High Dehairing Ability of the Bacillus pumilus CBS Alkaline Proteinase (SAPB)

        Bassem Jaouadi,Semia Ellouz-Chaabouni,Mamdouh Ben Ali,Ezzedine Ben Messaoud,Belgacem Naili,Abdelhafidh Dhouib,Samir Bejar 한국생물공학회 2009 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.14 No.4

The newly Tunisian soil-isolated bacterium, producing the alkaline proteinase termed SAPB that was already purified and characterized [1], was assigned as Bacillus pumilus CBS strain on the basis of biochemical properties and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The maximum protease activity recorded after 24 h of incubation in an optimized medium at 37°C was 6,500 U/mL in shaking flask culture and 25,000 U/mL in fermentor. SAPB showed excellent stability and compatibility in laundry detergent retaining more than 98% of its initial activity after pre-incubation for 1 h at 40°C with Det, followed by OMO (97%), Dinol (94%), and Dixan (93%). Examination of various stained cloth pieces exhibited a remarkable efficiency in the removal of blood and chocolate stains. More interestingly, SAPB demonstrated powerful dehairing capabilities of hair removal from skin with minimal damage on the collagen and a nearly complete feather-degradation. Likewise, Bacillus pumilus CBS effectively degraded feather-meal (98.5%), chicken feather (92%), goat hair (80%), and bovine hair (68%) whereas sheep wool under went less degradation. Keratin-degradation resulted in sulfhdryl group formation (0.95~3.91 μM).

      • A parametric study on the free vibration of a functionally graded material circular plate with non-uniform thickness resting on a variable Pasternak foundation by differential quadrature method

        Abdelbaki, Bassem M.,Ahmed, Mohamed E. Sayed,Al Kaisy, Ahmed M. Techno-Press 2022 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.11 No.4

This paper presents a parametric study on the free vibration analysis of a functionally graded material (FGM) circular plate with non-uniform thickness resting on a variable Pasternak elastic foundation. The mechanical properties of the material vary in the transverse direction through the thickness of the plate according to the power-law distribution to represent the constituent components. The equation of motion of the circular plate has been carried out based on the classical plate theory (CPT), and the differential quadrature method (DQM) is employed to solve the governing equations as a semi-analytical method. The grid points are chosen based on Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto distribution to achieve acceptable convergence and better accuracy. The influence of geometric parameters, variable elastic foundation, and functionally graded variation for clamped and simply supported boundary conditions on the first three natural frequencies are investigated. Comparisons of results with similar studies in the literature have been presented and two-dimensional mode shapes for particular plates have been plotted to illustrate the effect of variable thickness profile.
