CANADA’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESOLUTION OF THE DARFUR, SUDAN’S CONFLICT

The ongoing conflict in Darfur that has erupted in 2003 between the central government and rebel groups has resulted in large-scale atrocities, killing and displacement of civilians. It has been defined as an ethnic cleansing as well as the first genocide of the twenty-first century. This article explores the role that the international community plays in the resolution of the conflict. Through the use of qualitative methods of semi structured interviewed and analysis of secondary sources, this article particularly reveals the contribution of Canada to the resolution of the conflict through the activities of its government, Non-Governmental Organizations and grassroots organizations. Although much has been done to assist the people of Darfur, it can be argued that more should be done to ensure lasting peace. This can be achieved in the near future because as violence continues to unfold in Darfur, the role of Canada will continue to be crucial to help to foster peace in the coming years.

The Linguistic Landscape of Post-Soviet Bishkek

This study analyzes the linguistic landscape of post-Soviet Bishkek in order to understand the relationship among Kyrgyz, Russian, and English, and society in the city. The linguistic landscape is the visible language on public and private signs in a given territory. In Bishkek, the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic, the linguistic landscape not only includes the two languages given elevated status through the state’s official language policy, Russian and Kyrgyz, but also comprises the English language. My study is based on 104 photographed signs, 15 interviews with young residents of Bishkek, and 40 hours of participant observation. I argue that the status and function of Kyrgyz, Russian, and English in Bishkek society are closely tied to language ideologies resulting from globalization, social and linguistic hierarchies, and nationalistic and educational legacies of Soviet state-building. My findings have implications for the creation and adoption of multilingual nationalism in post-Soviet space.

Effects of Dried Apple Consumption on Body Composition, Serum Lipid Profile, Glucose Regulation, and Inflammatory Markers in Overweight and Obese Children

Consumption of fruits reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease; however, very few studies have investigated the effect of fruit consumption in overweight and obese children. We examined whether consuming dried apple as a snack is a practical solution for weight loss and improves body composition and metabolic markers. Thirty-eight overweight or obese children aged 10 to 16 years were randomly assigned to one of two groups consuming twice daily 120 kcal serving per day of either dried apple or a control snack (muffin) for 8 weeks. Body weight, height, waist circumference, and body composition were determined during an initial visit and after 8 weeks of intervention. Blood samples were collected to measure serum concentrations of blood lipids, glucose, insulin, proinsulin, total adiponectin, and C-reactive protein, as well as total antioxidant capacity and activity of glutathione peroxidase. Body weight increased in the muffin group (P = .01). BodPod and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry showed that fat-free mass increased (P < .05) only in the muffin group. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration increased (P = .04) after the 8-week treatment within the apple group. Overall, minor differences were detected in growing children who consumed snacks of either dried apples or muffins with similar macronutrient profiles for 8 weeks. Future research should evaluate the effects of consuming fresh apples that include the peel.

Teaching Social Justice through Three Time Periods of Sweatshop History

Due to the plethora of political, economic, and social challenges experienced on a global scale in the 21st century, students need to be concerned with more than their immediate surroundings (Johnson, 2005). When implemented in an educational setting, topics encompassing social justice may provide students with the confidence and skills to become “reflective, moral, caring, and active citizens in a troubled world” (Banks and Banks, 2009, p.5). The purpose of this article was to provide examples of undergraduate lessons focused on sweatshop conditions within three time periods of United States history that incorporate social justice into the course curriculum. By implementing social justice lessons into the curriculum, students can engage in critical reading, writing, and thinking about injustices faced by society. Girded with knowledge of past oppression within the apparel industry, students may become actively engaged in challenging social injustices in our world.

Urine Proteomics in the Era of Mass Spectrometry

With the technological advances of mass spectrometry (MS)-based platforms, clinical proteomics is one of the most rapidly growing areas in biomedical research. Urine proteomics has become a popular subdiscipline of clinical proteomics because it is an ideal source for the discovery of noninvasive disease biomarkers. The urine proteome offers a comprehensive view of the local and systemic physiology since the proteome is primarily composed of proteins/peptides from the kidneys and plasma. The emergence of MS-based proteomic platforms as prominent bioanalytical tools in clinical applications has enhanced the identification of protein-based urinary biomarkers. This review highlights the characteristics of urine that make it an attractive biofluid for biomarker discovery and the impact of MS-based technologies on the clinical assessment of urinary protein biomarkers.

Integrating Storytelling and Visual Arts Therapy: Case Reflections with Young Adults with autism

This paper explores the integration of narrative therapy and art therapy practice in work with young adults on the autism spectrum. Group and individual cases will demonstrate how the narratives of these clients have the potential to be expressed in unique ways through the use of visual art media in connection with storytelling. It will outline group responses to diverse visual arts media, including collage, clay, and photography. This paper may inform future practices that integrate visual arts, narrative processes, storytelling, and other expressive therapies in work with this population.

Transforming Social Studies Teacher Education : Teaching Civics to Adult English Language Learners

As social studies teacher educators we have a responsibility to prepare future teachers who are globally aware, culturally and linguistically responsive, and pedagogically reflective. This study seeks to better understand how a collaborative practicum experience with a local immigrant English/Civics community program is preparing pre-service social studies teachers (PSSTs) for their future work with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) secondary school students by asking the following question: [How] does the practicum experience develop pre-service teachers’ knowledge, attitudes, and skills for becoming globally aware and culturally and linguistically responsive educators? Using a lens of global mindedness and culturally and linguistically relevant pedagogy, we analyzed and interpreted PSSTs reflections. Findings revealed that PSSTs experienced significant changes in their professional and personal growth.

Changes in Membrane Fatty Acid Composition during Entry of Vibrio vulnificus into the Viable But Nonculturable State

Vibrio vulnificus, a Gram-negative bacterium found in estuarine waters, is responsible for over 95%of all seafood-related deaths in the United States. As a result of a temperature downshift to 5oC, this organism enters the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state. Changes in the membrane fatty acid (FA) composition of V. vulnificus may be a contributing factor to the ability of this organism to enter into and survive in the VBNC state. This hypothesis was tested by incubating the organism at 5oC in artificial sea water and analyzing the cells’ FAs during the initial hours of temperature and nutrient downshift. Prior to downshift, the predominant FAs were 16:0, 16:1 and 18:0. During the first four hours of downshift, statistically significant changes occurred in 15:0, 16:1, 16:0, 17:0, and 18:0. These results indicate that changes in FA composition occur prior to entry of V. vulnificus into the VBNC state, suggesting that the ability to maintain membrane fluidity may be a factor in this physiological response. Cells in which fatty acid synthesis was inhibited did not survive, indicating that active fatty acid metabolism is essential for entry of cells into the VBNC state.
