Experimental validation of the seismic analysis methodology for free-standing spent fuel racks
Alberto Gonzalez Merino,Luis Costas de la Pena,Arturo Gonzalez 한국원자력학회 2019 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.51 No.3
Spent fuel racks are steel structures used in the storage of the spent fuel removed from the nuclear powerreactor. Rack units are submerged in the depths of the spent fuel pool to keep the fuel cool. Their freestandingdesign isolates their bases from the pool floor reducing structural stresses in case of seismicevent. However, these singular features complicate their seismic analysis which involves a transientdynamic response with geometrical nonlinearities and fluid-structure interactions. An accurate estimationof the response is essential to achieve a safe pool layout and a reliable structural design. Ananalysis methodology based on the hydrodynamic mass concept and implicit integration algorithms wasdeveloped ad-hoc, but some dispersion of results still remains. In order to validate the analysis methodology, vibration tests are carried out on a reduced scale mock-up of a 2-rack system. The two rackmockups are submerged in free-standing conditions inside a rigid pool tank loaded with fake fuel assembliesand subjected to accelerations on a unidirectional shaking table. This article compares theexperimental data with the numerical outputs of a finite element model built in ANSYS Mechanical. Thein-phase motion of both units is highlighted and the water coupling effect is detailed. Results show agood agreement validating the methodology.

Chia oil has the highest recognized α-linolenic acid (ALA) content. ALA is associated with beneficial changes in plasma lipids and the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Present article aims to analyze the effect of Chia oil–enriched restructured pork (RP) on aged rats in a nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) model. Groups of six male Wistar rats (1-year old) were fed the experimental diets: control RP diet (C) noncholesterol high saturated; cholesterol-enriched high-saturated fat/high-cholesterol control RP diet (HC) with added cholesterol and cholic acid; and Chia oil- or Hydroxytyrosol RP cholesterol–enriched high-saturated fat/high cholesterol (CHIA and HxT). Total cholesterol, hepatosomatic index, Nrf2, antioxidant, and inflammation markers were determined. CHIA reduced the hypercholesterolemic effect by lowering levels similar to C; also, ameliorated redox index. CHIA, despite high polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content, reduced thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and induced the lowest SOD protein synthesis but not a reduction on its activity. Chia oil activated the Nrf2 to arrest the pro-oxidative response to cholesterol and aging. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) system was lower in HxT than in CHIA, suggesting its antiatherogenic activity and related protective effect against high PUFA. Increase in tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) was partially blocked by CHIA. Chia oil has the ability to prevent oxidative damage and modify the inflammatory response, suggesting adequate regulation of the antioxidant system. Results stress the importance of incorporating ALA into the diet.
Novus-io: An Internet of Things Platform for Academic Projects
( Camilo Lozoya ),( Alberto Aguilar-gonzalez ),( Antonio Favela-contreras ),( Arturo Zamora ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2018 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.12 No.12
Internet of things (IoT) is based on a global dynamic information network with cloud services where a great number of devices (things) exchange data to provide added-value services and products. There are several commercial and open source IoT platforms available in the market to connect devices to internet; however, they have cost and operational constraints that make them not suitable for academic projects. In this work, an IoT platform, known as Novus-io, is introduced in order to support academic projects for undergraduate students. With this platform and proper training, undergraduate students from different majors (not only from information technology and electronics) are capable to upgrade their school projects with IoT functionalities. The objective of this approach is to provide to any undergraduate student skills and knowledge on IoT, so they will be prepared, in their imminent step toward professionalism, to understand the relevance of digital services in today´s world.

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the productive performance, carcass yield, size of digestive organs and nutrient utilization in Mexican Creole chickens, using four diets with different concentrations of metabolizable energy (ME, kcal/kg) and crude protein (CP, %). Methods: Two hundred thirty-six chickens, coming from eight incubation batches, were randomly distributed to four experimental diets with the following ME/CP ratios: 3,000/20, 2,850/19, 2,700/18 and 2,550/17. Each diet was evaluated with 59 birds from hatching to 12 weeks of age. The variables feed intake (FI), body weight gain (BWG), feed conversion (FC), mortality, carcass yield, size of digestive organs, retention of nutrients, retention efficiency of gross energy (GE) and CP, and excretion of N were recorded. Data were analyzed as a randomized block design with repeated measures using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS, with covariance AR (1) and adjustment of degrees of freedom (Kendward-Roger), the adjusted means were compared with the least significant difference method at a significance level of 5%. Results: The productive performance variables BWG, mortality, carcass yield, fat and GE retention and excretion of N were not different (p>0.05) due to the diet effect. In the 3,000/20 diet, the chickens had lower values of FI, FC, crop weight, gizzard weight, retention, and retention efficiency of CP (p<0.05) than the chickens of the 2,550/17 diet. Conclusion: The Mexican Creole chickens from hatching to 12 weeks of age can be feed with a diet with 2,550 kcal ME and 17% CP, without compromising productive parameters (BWG, mortality, carcass yield) but improving retention and retention efficiency of CP.

We report the expression, purification, and characterization of L-asparaginase (AnsA) from Rhizobium etli. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity in a single-step procedure involving affinity chromatography, and the kinetic parameters Km, Vmax, and kcat for L-asparagine were determined. The enzymatic activity in the presence of a number of substrates and metal ions was investigated. The molecular mass of the enzyme was 47 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The enzyme showed a maximal activity at 50oC, but the optimal temperature of activity was 37oC. It also showed maximal and optimal activities at pH 9.0. The values of Km, Vmax, kcat, and kcat/Km were 8.9±0.967×10-3 M, 128±2.8 U/mg protein, 106±2 s-1, and 1.2±0.105×104M-1s-1, respectively. The L-asparaginase activity was reduced in the presence of Mn2+, Zn2+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ metal ions for about 52% to 31%. In addition, we found that NH4 +, L-Asp, D-Asn, and β-aspartyl-hydroxamate in the reaction buffer reduced the activity of the enzyme, whereas L-Gln did not modify its enzymatic activity. This is the first report on the expression and characterization of the L-asparaginase (AnsA) from R. etli. Phylogenetic analysis of asparaginases reveals an increasing group of known sequences of the Rhizobialtype asparaginase II family.
