Gummy stem blight (GSB) is one of the most destructive and economically important, soil borne diseases of melon caused by the ascomycete fungus, Didymella bryoniae throughout the world. In Korea, however, no GSB resistant genotype has been reported yet. The study aimed to identify GSB resistant melon germplasm. We screened a total of 60 genotypes including 16 lines and 44 melon cultivars collected from USA and Korea. Among the 16 melon lines, four lines including 'PI482399', 'PI140471', 'PI136170' and 'PI420145', and two Korean cultivars viz. 'Asia Papaya' and 'Supra' showed complete resistance. We were aware that both genotypic and environmental variations could influence the phenotypic screening of resistance and susceptibility. We therefore, further assessed all genotypes using 20 SSR markers. The SSR marker 'CMCT505' linked to Gsb1 in chromosome 1 perfectly grouped resistant and susceptible lines indicating that resistance is probably due to the presence of Gsb1 gene. Cloning and sequencing of resistant and susceptible Gsb1 amplicons showed that there were 32-bp deletions in resistant line and 39-bp deletions in resistant cultivar compared to susceptible one. Thus, the resistant melon lines and cultivars identified in this study could be recommended for the melon breeding program. Furthermore, the SSR marker 'CMCT505' which is tightly linked with Gsb1 could be used for molecular screening of melon germplasm.

Background: Despite being rare in incidence, malignant tumors of major salivary glands show diverse histological variation. There are limited data on major salivary gland tumor management and outcome from Pakistan. The objective of this study was to share our experience with management of malignant tumors of major salivary glands. Materials and Methods: Patients who received treatment at Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital and Research Center from July 2002 to June 2011 with an underlying diagnosis of a major salivary gland malignancy were included. Patient characteristics and treatment modalities were assessed. Local, regional and distant failures were determined. Disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated using Kaplan Meier curves and the Log rank test was used to determine statistical significance. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Cox proportional hazard regression. Results: The parotid gland was the primary site of origin in 104 (80%) patients. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (43%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (24%) were the most common histological types. Surgery followed by adjuvant radiation remained the mainstay treatment modality with 81 (62%) patients. Nineteen (15%) patients were treated with surgery alone and 30 (23%) patients with locally advanced surgically inoperable tumors received radiation only. Forty one (32%) patients failed the treatment (local 12, regional 11, locoregional 5, distant 13). The expected 5 year DFS and OS were 65% and 74% respectively. On multivariate analysis, grade was the only independent predictor of DFS and nodal involvement was the only independent predictor of overall survival. Conclusions: Employing existing standards of treatment, comparable survival can be achieved in Pakistani population with major salivary gland malignancies as elsehwere in the world.
Gemcitabine And Cisplatin Followed by Chemo-Radiation for Advanced Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Concurrent chemo-radiation (CRT) has been established as the standard of care for non-metastatic loco-regionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) but recently the addition of induction chemotherapy in the already established regimen has presented an attractive multidisciplinary approach. This retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of induction chemotherapy (IC) followed by CRT for the management of loco-regionally advanced NPC. Between July 2005 and September 2010, 99 patients were treated with cisplatin based IC followed by CRT. Induction chemotherapy included a 2 drug combination; intravenous gemcitabine $1000mg/m^2$ on day 1 and 8 and cisplatin $75mg/m^2$ on day 1 only. Radiotherapy (RT) was given as a phase treatment to a total dose of 70 Gy in 35 fractions. Concurrent cisplatin ($75mg/m^2$) was administered to all patients on days 1, 22 and 43. All patients were evaluated for tumor response and adverse effects after IC and 6 weeks after the completion of the treatment protocol. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 17 and Kaplan Meier estimates were applied to project survival. Median follow-up duration was 20 months. The 5-year overall survival (OS), loco regional control (LRC) and relapse free survival (RFS) rates were 71%, 73% and 50%respectively. Acute grade 4 toxicity related to induction chemotherapy and concurrent chemo-radiation was 4% and 2% respectively, with only 3 toxicity-related hospital admissions. We conclude that induction gemcitabine and cisplatin followed by chemo-radiation is a safe and effective regimen in management of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, meriting further investigation in randomized clinical trials.
Occurrence and identification of Emeria species in broiler rearing under traditional system

Background: The present study was intended to determine the prevalence and identification of species involved causing coccidiosis in broilers rearing under traditional farming system in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. For the current study, a convenient sampling technique was carried out. A total of 7814 broilers (aged 1 to 6 weeks) were submitted to the Disease Diagnostic Laboratory of Livestock and Animal husbandry Department Mirpur, Azad Kashmir. Results: From the total screened, 750 were found positive for coccidiosis representing an overall prevalence of 9.59 %. Age-wise highest prevalence (10.88 %) recorded in the middle age birds (0 to 3 week old) were found more susceptible to infection than those aged above 3 weeks. Higher prevalence (12.49 %) of coccidiosis in broilers was observed in spring as compared with 6.60 % in summer season. In this study two main coccidiosis causing species, Emeria tenella and Emeria maxima were identified on the basis of their morphological feature and habitat (caeca and intestine), However, E. tenella was dominant compared to E. maxima. Conclusion: The study provides an insight to the occurrence of Emeria species which must be taken into consideration when rearing the broilers.

In recent years, the demand of electric power generation has increased significantly. Electrical distribution systems are progressively featured with multi types of Distributed Generation (DG) units to meet the sustainable energy requirements, improve voltage profile, and minimize energy losses. The aim of this work was to improve voltage profile and to reduce the power losses by optimal placing and sizing of multiple DGs, grouped in three types according to their capability in generating active and reactive powers, using iterative method. The load-flow method was used to simulate the test system i.e., IEEE-33 bus radial distribution system, using MATLAB programming. A notable improvement in voltage profile and reduction in active and reactive power losses of 69.66% and 64.14%, respectively, were achieved in comparison to the system without DGs.
