Flexural bond strength behaviour in OPC concrete of NBS beam for various corrosion levels

Akshatha Shetty,Katta Venkataramana,K.S. Babu Narayan 국제구조공학회 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.49 No.1

Corrosion is one of the primary reasons why structures have limited durability. The present investigation is carried out to study the behavior of RC (Reinforced Concrete) structural members subjected to corrosion. Experimental investigations were carried out on National Bureau of Standard (NBS), RC beam specimens made of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) concrete. Load versus deflection behaviour was studied for different levels of corrosion i.e., 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%. It is observed that for every percentage increase in corrosion level, there is about 1.6% decrease in load carrying capacity. Also as the amount of corrosion increases there is a reduction in bond stress.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Fabrication of Hydrophilic Antimicrobial Polymer Thin Film Coatings

        Akshatha Nagaraja,Yashoda Malgar Puttaiahgowda,Ananda Kulal,Ajithkumar Manayan Parambil,Thivaharan Varadavenkatesan 한국고분자학회 2019 Macromolecular Research Vol.27 No.3

An efficient hydrophilic-antimicrobial thin film coating of functionalized polymaliamides for controlling pathogenic microorganisms is reported in this article. The article is enriched with synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial studies of polymaliamides and its thin film. FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR details of the polymaliamidesis explicated, and the thermal properties of the polymer are revealed using TGA, DSC studies and detailed explanation is provided in the article. The activity of the polymer and thin film against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, tuberculosis variant bacteria Mycobacterium smegmatis and Candida albicans are also reported ornately. The morphological behavior of film when interacting with the microbes is studies using SEM and AFM studied and presented elaborately.

Integrative Strategy with Ayurveda and Electro-Acupuncture in Hemifacial Spasm: a Case Report

Bhat Akshatha K,kumar Venugopalan Krishna,Johnson Jim Daniel 사단법인약침학회 2023 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.16 No.2

We report a primary hemifacial spasm that started four years ago with sudden twitching of the face towards the right side. It was diagnosed as a hemifacial spasm by a neurologist and prescribed with Zeptol 100 mg 0.5 tablet BID for two weeks, followed by two sittings of Botox injection in a gap of 1 year. A year later, it reappeared more severely, driving her towards an integrative treatment modality. Ayurveda treatments including Nasya, Ksheera dhooma, internal medications, and Rasona navaneetha prayoga were administered. GV20, GB14, EX-HN5, ST3, ST4, ST6, TE17, LI4, and GB34 were selected for electroacupuncture. The scores of hemifacial spasm grading and quality of life scale were 9 and 20 (before), 6 and 16 (after treatment), and 4 and 10 (follow-up after six months), respectively. This integrative approach was safe and has shown an improvement in hemifacial spasm.

Gross motor dysfunction and balance impairments in children and adolescents with Down syndrome: a systematic review

        Jain Preyal D.,Nayak Akshatha,Karnad Shreekanth D.,Doctor Kaiorisa N. 대한소아청소년과학회 2022 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.65 No.3

Background: Individuals with Down syndrome present with several impairments such as hypotonia, ligament laxity, decreased muscle strength, insufficient muscular cocontraction, inadequate postural control, and disturbed proprioception. These factors are responsible for the developmental challenges faced by children with Down syndrome. These individuals also present with balance dysfunctions.Purpose: This systematic review aims to describe the motor dysfunction and balance impairments in children and adolescents with Down syndrome. Methods: We searched the Scopus, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Wiley, and EBSCO databases for observational studies evaluating the motor abilities and balance performance in individuals with Down syndrome. The review was registered on PROSPERO.Results: A total of 1,096 articles were retrieved; after careful screening and scrutinizing against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 articles were included in the review. Overall, the children and adolescents with Down syndrome showed delays and dysfunction in performing various activities such as sitting, pulling to stand, standing, and walking. They also presented with compensatory mechanisms to maintain their equilibrium in static and dynamic activities. Conclusion: The motor development of children with Down syndrome is significantly delayed due to structural differences in the brain. These individuals have inefficient compensatory strategies like increasing step width, increasing frequency of mediolateral center of pressure displacement, decreasing anteroposterior displacement, increasing trunk stiffness, and increasing posterior trunk displacement to maintain equilibrium. Down syndrome presents with interindividual variations; therefore, a thorough evaluation is required before a structured intervention is developed to improve motor and balance dysfunction.

      • Manual Liquid Based Cytology in Primary Screening for Cervical Cancer - a Cost Effective Preposition for Scarce Resource Settings

Nandini, N.M.,Nandish, S.M.,Pallavi, P.,Akshatha, S.K.,Chandrashekhar, A.P.,Anjali, S.,Dhar, Murali Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.8

Conventional pap smear (CPS) examination has been the mainstay for early detection of cervical cancer. However, its widespread use has not been possible due to the inherent limitations, like presence of obscuring blood and inflammation, reducing its sensitivity considerably. Automated methods in use in developed countries may not be affordable in the developing countries due to paucity of resources. On the other hand, manual liquid based cytology (MLBC) is a technique that is cost effective and improves detection of precursor lesions and specimen adequacy. Therefore the aim of the study was to compare the utility of MLBC with that of CPS in cervical cancer screening. A prospective study of 100 cases through MLBC and CPS was conducted from October 2009 to July 2010, in a Medical College in India, by two independent pathologists and correlated with histopathology (22 cases). Morphological features as seen through MLBC and CPS were compared. Subsequently, all the cases were grouped based on cytological diagnosis according to two methods into 10 groups and a subjective comparison was made. In order to compare the validity of MLBC with CPS in case of major diagnoses, sensitivity and specificity of the two methods were estimated considering histological examination as the gold standard. Increased detection rate with MLBC was 150%. The concordance rate by LBC/histopathology v/s CPS/histopathology was also improved (86% vs 77%) The percentage agreement by the two methods was 68%. MLBC was more sensitive in diagnosis of LSIL and more specific in the diagnosis of inflammation. Thus, MLBC was found to be better than CPS in diagnosis of precursor lesions. It provided better morphology with increased detection of abnormalities and preservation of specimen for cell block and ancillary studies like immunocytochemistry and HPV detection. Therefore, it can be used as alternative strategy for cervical cancer prevention in limited resource settings.
