        Rapid, real-time detection of pathogenic microorganisms is an emerging and quickly evolving field of research, especially with regard to microorganisms that pose a major threat to public health. Herein, a new method that uses bioimpedance and solid culture medium for the real-time detection of microorganisms is introduced. We fabricated a new impedimetric biosensor by integrating solid media and two plane electrodes attached on two facing sides of an acryl well. During bioelectrical impedance analysis, the solid medium showed the characteristics of a homogenous conductive material. In a real-time impedance measurement, our solid-medium biosensor could monitor bacterial growth in situ with a detection time of ~4 hrs. Our data indicate that the solid-medium biosensor is useful for detecting airborne microorganisms, thereby providing a new analytical tool for impedance microbiology.

        MBA(Master of Business Administration) holders are few and not so important in Japanese companies. Many Japanese MBA holders conceal that they have MBA degrees. Many such individuals include business people that have attended business schools in Japan without informing their companies. Japanese employees receiving MBA degrees from Japanese, American or European business schools are unlikely to see salary increases and/or promotions commensurate with having earned a higher business degree. However, at Korean and Chinese companies it is common that such employees would receive salary increases and/or promotions after having received the MBA degree. The focus of this paper is MBA holders who are working in Japanese companies, and the purpose is to explain the current situations of such MBA holders. To achieve the purpose of this study, I analyzed Japanese MBA holders, especially studied at U.S. top business schools, in relation to Korean MBA holders and Chinese MBA holders.

        Adiponectin-Activated AMPK Stimulates Dephosphorylation of AKT through Protein Phosphatase 2A Activation

        <P>Low serum levels of adiponectin are a high risk factor for various types of cancer. Although adiponectin inhibits proliferation and metastasis of breast cancer cells, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain obscure. In this study, we show that adiponectin-activated AMPK reduces the invasiveness of MDA-MB-231 cells by stimulating dephosphorylation of AKT by increasing protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) activity. Among the various regulatory B56 subunits, B56gamma was directly phosphorylated by AMPK at Ser(298) and Ser(336), leading to an increase of PP2A activity through dephosphorylation of PP2Ac at Tyr(307). We also show that both the blood levels of adiponectin and the tissue levels of PP2A activity were decreased in breast cancer patients and that the direct administration of adiponectin into tumor tissues stimulates PP2A activity. Taken together, these findings show that adiponectin, derived from adipocytes, negatively regulates the invasiveness of breast cancer cells by activating the tumor suppressor PP2A.</P>

        Reductive Dechlorination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls as Affected by Natural Halogenated Aromatic Compounds

        We investigated the effects of halogenated aromatic compounds (HACs) including naturally occurring ones (L-thyroxine, 3-chloro-L-tyrosine, 5-chloroindole, 2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol and chlorobenzene) on polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) dechlorination in sediment cultures. A PCB-dechlorinating enrichment culture of sediment microorganisms from the St. Lawrence River was used as an initial inoculum. When the culture was inoculated into Aroclor 1248 sediments amended with each of the six HACs, the extent of dechlorination was not enhanced by amendment with HACs. The dechlorination patterns in the HAC-amended sediments were nearly identical to that of the HAC-free sediments except the 3-chloro-L-tyrosine-amended ones where no dechlorination activity was observed. When these sediment cultures were transferred into fresh sediments with the same HACs, the dechlorination specificities remained the same as those of the initial inoculations. Thus, in the present study, the substrate range of the highly selected enrichment culture could not be broadened by the HACs. It appears that HACs affect PCB dechlorination mainly through population selection rather than enzyme induction of single population.

        Adipocyte culture medium stimulates invasiveness of MDA-MB-231 cell via CCL20 production

        <P>We explored whether adipocyte culture medium affects the secreted chemokine profile of tumor cells, because adipocytes stimulate progression or metastasis of breast cancer cells, and chemokines secreted from tumor cells are involved in these processes. CCL20 expression was dramatically increased, and an NF-kappaB blocker completely inhibited adipocyte culture medium-induced CCL20 expression in MDA-MB-231 cells. We showed that adipocyte culture medium increased the production of TNF-alpha in MDA-MB-231 cells, which stimulated CCL20 expression in an autocrine fashion. Our data also showed that CCL20 increased the migration and invasiveness of MDA-MB-231 cells, but did not affect the proliferation of these cells.</P>

        A Human-Centric Approach for Smart Manufacturing Adoption: An Empirical Study

        Purpose: This study aims to address the overlooked micro-level aspects within Smart Manufacturing (SM) research, rectifying the misalignment in manufacturing firms' estimation of their technological adoption capabilities. Drawing upon the Social-Technical Systems (STS) theory, this paper utilises innovation capability as a mediating variable, constructing a human-centric organisational model to bridge this research gap. Research design, data and methodology: This study collected data from 233 Chinese manufacturing firms via online questionnaires. Introducing innovation capability as a mediating variable, it investigates the impact of social-technical system dimensions (work design, social subsystems, and technical subsystems) on SM adoption willingness. Smart PLS 4.0 was employed for data analysis, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) validated the theoretical model's assumptions. Results: In direct relationships, social subsystems, technical subsystems, and work design positively influence firms' innovation capabilities, which, in turn, positively impact SM adoption. However, innovation capability does not mediate the relationship between technical subsystems and SM adoption. Conclusions: This study focuses on the internal micro-level of organisational employees, constructing a humancentric framework that emphasises the interaction between organisations and technology. The study fills empirical gaps in Smart Manufacturing adoption, providing organisations with a means to examine the integration of employees and the organisational socialtechnical system.

        P-type Si-nanowire-based Field-effect Transistors for Electric Detection of a Biomarker: Matrix Metalloproteinase-9

        We studied the electric detection of a biomarker by using p-type Si-nanowire-based field-effect transistors (FETs) for biological applications. A combination of electron-beam lithography and a lift-off process was utilized to fabricate individual 50-nm-thick Si nanowire FETs. The gatedependent I − VSD curves revealed that the conductance of a Si-nanowire FET increased with increasing negative VG. The conductance of the Si nanowire FET depended upon the existence of negatively charged streptavidin binding to a biotin with a peptide and Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), cutting the peptide. Our results suggest that Si-nanowire FETs can be used to detect MMP-9 activity.

        학교 실내환경에서 공기중 미생물의 분포 및 특성

        To assess microbiological indoor air quality in schools, concentrations of viable airborne microorganisms were monitored at classrooms and corridors of 3 middle or high schools in Ulsan. Airborne microorganisms were sampled at various situations during a semester (class-hour, lunchtime, after school) and during a vacation with an impaction-type air sampler. During the semester, the number of bacteria was the highest at lunchtime in corridor with an average of $1,111\;MPN/m^{3}$ and lowest at class-hour in corridor with an average of $132\;MPN/m^{3}$. During the vacation, the bacterial concentrations at classrooms and corridors were only $5{\%}$ and $27{\%}$ of the values during class-hours of the semester, respectively. Among the colonies tested, $60{\%}$ were identified as relatively harmless Micrococcus species and $12{\%}$ were Staphylococcus species. During the semester, the average values of fungal concentrations at each situation ranged from 105 to $213\;MPN/m^{3}$, and the values during the vacation were $32\;MPN/m^{3}$ at classrooms and $83\;MPN/m^{3}$ in corridors. Fungal genera such as Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus were identified from the colonies. The obtained data can be considered as a step to set a guideline for bioaerosols in indoor environment of schools. 미생물학적 실내공기질을 평가하기 위하여, 울산에 위치한 중${\cdot}$고등학교 3곳이 교실과 복도에서, 학기 중(수업시간, 점심시간, 방과 후)과 방학 중 등 상황별로 공기중 미생물의 농도를 조사하였다. 미생물의 포집에는 충돌식 공기 채취기를 사용하였으며, 세균수는 plate count agar, 진균수는 dichloran rose bengal chloramphenicol agar를 사용하여 측정하였고, 이들 배지로부터 세균과 진균을 분리하여 동정하였다. 학기 중 세균 농도는 점심시간의 복도에서 평균 $1,111\;MPN/m^{3}$로 가장 높았고, 수업시간의 복도에서 평균 $132\;MPN/m^{3}$로 가장 낮았으며, 방학 중의 측정값은 교실과 복도에서 각각 학기 중 수업시간의 $5{\%}$와 $27{\%}$ 수준이었다. 조사한 집락의 $60{\%}$는 병원성과 관련이 적은 Micrococcus spp.로 동정되었고. Staphylococdcus 속은 $12{\%}$를 차지하였다. 학기 중 진균의 평균 농도는 상황별로 $105{\~}213\;MPN/m^{3}$의 범위였으며, 방학 중의 측정값은 교실과 복도에서 각각 $32\;MPN/m^{3}$와 $83\;MPN/m^{3}$이었다. 공기중 진균의 집락으로부터 Cladosporium 속, Penicillium 속, Aspergillus 속 등을 확인할 수 있었으며, 언급한 3 속이 조사한 집락의 $77{\%}$를 차지하였다. 연구의 결과는 학교 실내에서 학생수와 함께 활동성과 연관된 상황에 따른 세균 농도의 변이를 보여주었으며, 학교 환경에서 bioaerosol의 허용수준을 결정함에 있어 이를 고려해야 함을 제안하고 있다.
