        Fabrication of Bi4Ti3O12 Films on Pt Substrate by Inkjet Printing

        Ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 thin films were prepared on Pt-coated Si wafers by using alcoholic solutions which dissolved Bi(OtC5H11)3 and Ti[OCH(CH3)2]4 in C2H5OC2H4OH. To fabricate films with a single phase of the perovskite structure, we fired the precursor films in an atmosphere with strong oxidizability. The fabricated films exhibited a single perovskite phase and a predominantly c-axis orientation with plate-like grains larger than 4 × 4 μm2 and smooth surface over an extensive area. The leakage current density of the films was of the order of 10.7 A/cm2. Several 1 × 1 cm2 square patterns were directly drawn on a 4-inch Si wafers by inkjet printing (IJP). The minimum dot size realized was approximately 70 μm in diameter. Beside, the force a droplet from printer head was faithfully. However, from the typical thickness profile of the printed line shape patterns, the height at the center of the line was very low while that at the periphery was extremely high. This seems to be due to the surface tension.

      • Measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry inB→Xsℓ+ℓ−decays with a sum of exclusive modes

        <P>We report the first measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry A(FB) as a function of the squared four-momentum of the dilepton system, q(2), for the electroweak penguin process B -> X(s)l(+)l(-) with a sum of exclusive final states, where l is an electron or a muon and X-s is a hadronic recoil system with an s quark. The results are based on a data sample containing 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded at the gamma (4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. A(FB) for the inclusive B -> X(s)l(+)l(-) is extrapolated from the sum of 10 exclusive X-s states whose invariant mass is less than 2 GeV/c(2). For q(2) > 10.2 GeV2/c(2), A(FB) < 0 is excluded at the 2.3 sigma level, where sigma is the standard deviation. For q(2) < 4.3 GeV2/c(2), the result is within 1.8 sigma of the standard model theoretical expectation.</P>

        The Genetic Variability and Relationships of Japanese and Foreign Chickens Assessed by Microsatellite DNA Profiling

        This is the first study in which genetic variability and relationships of a large number of Japanese chicken breeds were revealed along with those of several foreign breeds by using microsatellite DNA polymorphisms. Twenty-eight breeds (34 populations) of native Japanese chickens and seven foreign breeds or varieties were analyzed. The mean number of alleles per locus, the proportion of the polymorphic loci, and the expected average heterozygosity ranged from 1.75 to 4.70, from 0.55 to 1.00, and from 0.21 to 0.67, respectively. Microsatellite alleles being unique to a particular population were detected in some populations. The $D_A$ genetic distance between populations was obtained from allele frequency for every pair of the populations to construct a neighbor-joining tree. According to the phylogenetic tree, excluding a few exceptions, native Japanese chicken breeds and foreign breeds were clearly separated from each other. Furthermore, the tree topology divided native Japanese chickens into four main classes, which was almost in accordance with the classification based on body morphology; that is, (1) Cochin type, (2) Malay type, (3) layer type, and (4) intermediate type between Malay and layer types. This is the first finding for native Japanese chickens.

      • Conditional PTEN-deficient Mice as a Prostate Cancer Chemoprevention Model

        Background: We generated a mouse model of prostate cancer based on the adult-prostate-specific inactivation of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) using the Cre-loxP system. The potential of our mice as a useful animal model was examined by evaluating the chemopreventive efficacy of the anti-androgen, chlormadinone acetate (CMA). Materials and Methods: Six-week-old mice were treated subcutaneously with $50{\mu}g/g$ of CMA three times a week for 9 or 14 weeks and sacrificed at weeks 15 and 20. Macroscopic change of the entire genitourinary tract (GUT) and histologically evident prostate gland tumor development were evaluated. Proliferation and apoptosis status in the prostate were examined by immunohistochemistry. Results: CMA triggered significant shrinkage of not only the GUT but also prostate glands at 15 weeks compared to the control (p=0.017 and p=0.010, respectively), and the trend became more marked after a further five-weeks of treatment. The onset of prostate adenocarcinoma was not prevented but the proliferation of cancer cells was inhibited by CMA, which suggested the androgen axis is critical for cancer growth in these mice. Conclusions: Conditional PTEN-deficient mice are useful as a preclinical model for chemoprevention studies and serve as a valuable tool for the future screening of potential chemopreventive agents.

      • Single-particle characterization of aerosols collected at a remote site in the Amazonian rainforest and an urban site in Manaus, Brazil

        <P><p><strong>Abstract.</strong> <span id='page1222'/>In this study, aerosol samples collected at a remote site in the Amazonian rainforest and an urban site in Manaus, Brazil, were investigated on a single-particle basis using a quantitative energy-dispersive electron probe X-ray microanalysis (ED-EPMA). A total of 23 aerosol samples were collected in four size ranges (0.25-0.5, 0.5-1.0, 1.0-2.0, and 2.0-4.0<span class='thinspace'></span><span class='inline-formula'>µ</span>m) during the wet season in 2012 at two Amazon basin sites: 10 samples in Manaus, an urban area; and 13 samples at an 80<span class='thinspace'></span>m high tower, located at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) site in the middle of the rainforest, 150<span class='thinspace'></span>km northeast of Manaus. The aerosol particles were classified into nine particle types based on the morphology on the secondary electron images (SEIs) together with the elemental concentrations of 3162 individual particles: (i) secondary organic aerosols (SOA); (ii) ammonium sulfate (AS); (iii) SOA and AS mixtures; (iv) aged mineral dust; (v) reacted sea salts; (vi) primary biological aerosol (PBA); (vii) carbon-rich or elemental carbon (EC) particles, such as soot, tarball, and char; (viii) fly ash; and (ix) heavy metal (HM, such as Fe, Zn, Ni, and Ti)-containing particles. In submicron aerosols collected at the ATTO site, SOA and AS mixture particles were predominant (50<span class='thinspace'></span>%-94<span class='thinspace'></span>% in relative abundance) with SOA and ammonium sulfate comprising 73<span class='thinspace'></span>%-100<span class='thinspace'></span>%. In supermicron aerosols at the ATTO site, aged mineral dust and sea salts (37<span class='thinspace'></span>%-70<span class='thinspace'></span>%) as well as SOA and ammonium sulfate (28<span class='thinspace'></span>%-58<span class='thinspace'></span>%) were abundant. PBAs were observed abundantly in the PM<span class='inline-formula'><sub>2−4</sub></span> fraction (46<span class='thinspace'></span>%), and EC and fly ash particles were absent in all size fractions. The analysis of a bulk PM<span class='inline-formula'><sub>0.25−0.5</sub></span> aerosol sample from the ATTO site using Raman microspectrometry and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) showed that ammonium sulfate, organics, and minerals are the major chemical species, which is consistent with the ED-EPMA results. In the submicron aerosols collected in Manaus, either SOA and ammonium sulfate (17<span class='thinspace'></span>%-80<span class='thinspace'></span>%) or EC particles (6<span class='thinspace'></span>%-78<span class='thinspace'></span>%) were dominant depending on the samples. In contrast, aged mineral dust, reacted sea salt, PBA, SOA, ammonium sulfate, and EC particles comprised most of the supermicron aerosols collected in Manaus. The SOA, ammonium sulfate, and PBAs were mostly of a biogenic origin from the rainforest, whereas the EC and HM-containing particles were of an anthropogenic origin. Based on the different contents of SOA, ammonium sulfate, and EC particles among the samples collected in Manaus, a considerable influence of the rainforest over the city was observed. Aged mineral dust and reacted sea-salt particles, including mineral dust mixed with sea salts probably during long-range transatlantic transport, were abundant in the supermicron fractions at both sites. Among the aged mineral dust and reacted sea-salt particles, sulfate-containing ones outnumbered those containing nitrates and sulfate<span class='thinspace'></span><span class='inline-formula'>+</span><span class='thinspace'></span>nitrate in the ATTO samples. In contrast, particles containing sulfate<span class='thinspace'></span><span class='inline-formula'>+</span><span class='thinspace'></span>nitrate were comparable in number to particles containing sulfate only in the Manaus samples, indicating

        Optically controlled initialization and read-out of an electron spin bound to a fluorine donor in ZnSe

        Here we report photon antibunching and magneto-spectroscopy of a single electron spin bound to a fluorine donor in a ZnMgSe/ZnSe QW nanostructure. The results confirm the presence of an optically controllable lambda-system which allows the optical manipulation of the electron bound to the neutral fluorine donor as a spin qubit. Moreover, we achieved optical spin pumping of the qubit by resonant excitation of each of the four allowed transitions of the lambda system. We verified the spin transfer by detecting single photons when the bound electron decays into the opposite spin state. The results presented here constitutes an elegant initialization and the read-out procedure of the electron spin qubit bound to a fluorine donor which are prerequisite for coherent optical control of an impurity based solidstate spin qubit.

        Purification and Properties of Bovine Skeletal Muscle Proteasome

        This paper describes the purification and properties of a multicatalytic proteinase complex, proteasome, from bovine skeletal muscle, in comparision with proteasome prepared from other species or organs. The purified bovine skeletal muscle proteasome exhibited a single band on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under nondenaturing conditions. Bovine skeletal muscle proteasome degraded synthetic peptides maximally at pH 8.0. Relative to pH 8.0, activities were gradually decreased with the lowering pH, but the extent of decrease was substrate-dependent, and the activity at pH 5.5 still retained 78-10% of the activity at pH 8.0, indicating the possibility that the proteasome is active in muscle during aging. When the proteasome was heated at 60$^{\circ}C$ for 15 or 30 min and treated in the presence of 0.0125% SDS, the activity increased over 1.8 and 3.1 times (LLVY (Suc-Leu-Leu-Val-Tyr-NH-Mec) as a substrate), respectively. These results (activation with heat or SDS) indicate that the hydrolytic activity of proteasome was stimulated under mild denaturing conditions. The characteristics of the bovine skeletal muscle proteasome obtained in our experiment were almost the same as those of the proteasome prepared from other species or organs.
