Cross Sections for Neutron Inelastic Scattering on ^(28)Si

        A. Negret,C. Borcea,A. J. M. Plompen 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.23

A measurement of the neutron inelastic cross sections on ^(28)Si was performed at the GELINA (Geel Linear Accelerator) white neutron source of EC-JRC-IRMM, Belgium. The GAINS (Gamma Array for Inelastic Neutron Scattering) detection system was used to determine the production cross sections of the most intense gamma rays. The neutron flux was monitored with a ^(235)U fission chamber. Using the level scheme from the ENSDF database, the total inelastic cross section and the level production cross section of the first levels were determined. A few gamma production cross sections from the (n,p) and (n,α) channels were also measured. The results are compared with previous existing data and with the results of theoretical calculations performed with the TALYS 1.2 reaction code.

Method Developing and Testing for Inelastic Scattering Measurements at the GELINA Facility

        A. Plompen,N. Nankov,C. Rouki,M. Stanoiu,C. Borcea,D. Deleanu,A. Negret,P. Dessagne,M. Kerveno,G. Rudolf,J. C. Thiry,M. Mosconi,R. Nolte 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.23

Accurate inelastic scattering measurements are of interest to improving modelling and simulation of advanced reactor systems through better nuclear data (OECD-NEA, High priority request list for nuclear data http://www.nea.fr/html/dbdata/hprl/). Two setups are available at IRMM for measurements of inelastic scattering with the (n; n´γ)-technique. The first the GAINS gammaarray for inelastic neutron scattering at a 200 m station consists of eight high purity germanium detectors, has high incident neutron energy resolution and is therefore tailored for inelastic scattering measurements. The second, at a 30 m station was developed by IPHC with the purpose of studying actinides for the Th/U cycle and emphasizing besides (n, n´γ) also (n, 2nγ) reactions. In the recent past a number of efforts were started to investigate the uncertainties and corrections required to obtain reliable results and to investigate the limits of accuracy of this technique. A joint effort is described that has led to an improved understanding of the fission chambers used. In particular, the important corrections to the efficiency for fission fragment loss were investigated.

Measurement of (n,xnγ) Reactions of Interest for the New Nuclear Reactors

        J. C. Thiry,C. Borcea,P. Dessagne,J. C. Drohe,E. Jericha,H. Karam,M. Kerveno,A. J. Koning,A. Negret,A. Pavlik,A. Plompen,C. Rouki,G. Rudolf,M. Stanoiu 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.23

The design of Generation IV nuclear reactors and the research of new fuel cycles require knowledge of the cross sections of different nuclear reactions. Our research is focused on cross section measurements of (n,xnγ) reactions occurring in these new reactors. The aim is to measure unknown cross sections and to reduce the uncertainty on present data relative to reactions and isotopes present in transmutation or regeneration processes. The current work consists of studying ^(232)Th(n,n'γ) and ^(235)U(n,xnγ) reactions in the fast neutron energy domain (up to 20 MeV). The experiments are performed at the GEel LINear Accelerator (GELINA) which delivers a pulsed, white neutron beam at IRMM, Belgium. The time characteristics of the beam enable us to measure neutron energies with the time of flight (TOF) technique. The neutron induced reactions (in this case inelastic scattering and (n,2n) reactions) are identified by online prompt γ spectroscopy with an experimental setup including 4 HPGe detectors. A double layered fission chamber is used to monitor the incident neutron flux. The experimental setup and analysis methods will be presented and a comparison between the obtained cross sections and the TALYS predictions will be discussed. This work is a first step in the preparation of the measurement of ^(233)U(n,xnγ) reactions, which are completely unknown at this stage although of very high importance in the ^(232)Th regeneration process.

Polyphenol Bioaccessibility and Antioxidant Activity of Pomegranate (Punica granatum) Peel Supplementation in Diet-Induced Obese Rats

Anael Mellado-Negrete,Gloria Itzel Peña-Vázquez,Vania Urías-Orona,Ana Laura de la Garza 한국식품영양과학회 2023 Journal of medicinal food Vol.26 No.8

Fruit by-products are a source of biocompounds with antioxidant properties and potential role in the obesitytreatment. This study aimed to assess the effect of pomegranate (Punica granatum) peel (PP) supplementation on the totalantioxidant capacity (TAC) in diet-induced obese rats. Thus, an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion was performed to evaluatethe total phenolic content (TPC) and the antioxidant capacity of PP. Moreover, 15 male Wistar rats were randomized into threegroups: control diet (CTL; 3.35 kcal/g), cafeteria (CAF) diet (3.72 kcal/g), and CAF diet supplemented with PP (CAF + PP;200 mg/kg body weight; 3.72 kcal/g). Serum TAC was analyzed by ferric reducing antioxidant power and 2,2-Diphenil-1-picrylhydrazil assay. TPC in PP accounted for 8.82 – 0.14 mg GAE/g in undigested samples. However, an in vitro digestionprocess was decreased by 94% the bioaccessibility of PP phenolic compounds in the intestinal phase, while PP supplementationincreased serum TAC in diet-induced obese rats. Therefore, although PP phenolic compounds diminished after anin vitro digestion process, antioxidant effect was found in obese rats supplemented with PP.

Gallibacterium elongation factor-Tu possesses amyloid-like protein characteristics, participates in cell adhesion, and is present in biofilms

        Jaqueline López-Ochoa,J. Fernando Montes-García,Candelario Vázquez,Patricia Sánchez-Alonso,Victor M. Pérez-Márquez,Patrick J. Blackall,Sergio Vaca,Erasmo Negrete-Abascal 한국미생물학회 2017 The journal of microbiology Vol.55 No.9

Gallibacterium, which is a bacterial pathogen in chickens, can form biofilms. Amyloid proteins present in biofilms bind Congo red dye. The aim of this study was to characterize the cell-surface amyloid-like protein expressed in biofilms formed by Gallibacterium strains and determine the relationship between this protein and curli, which is an amyloid protein that is commonly expressed by members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. The presence of amyloid-like proteins in outer membrane protein samples from three strains of G. anatis and one strain of Gallibacterium genomospecies 2 was evaluated. A protein identified as elongation factor-Tu (EF-Tu) by mass spectrometric analysis and in silico analysis was obtained from the G. anatis strain F149T. This protein bound Congo red dye, cross-reacted with anti-curli polyclonal serum, exhibited polymerizing properties and was present in biofilms. This protein also reacted with pooled serum from chickens that were experimentally infected with G. anatis, indicating the in vivo immunogenicity of this protein. The recombinant EF-Tu purified protein, which was prepared from G. anatis 12656-12, polymerizes under in vitro conditions, forms filaments and interacts with fibronectin and fibrinogen, all of which suggest that this protein functions as an adhesin. In summary, EF-Tu from G. anatis presents amyloid characteristics, is present in biofilms and could be relevant for the pathogenesis of G. anatis.
