Two cases of infection of Dipylidium caninum in dog is reported in Chonbuk area. Clinically, gravid proglotiid and eggs were present on the anal area and feces of dogs infected with Dipylidium caninum. And the infected dogs were revealed diarrhea, wean, anorexia, emaciated and steady growth.

The most common cause of death is ostrich chick fading syndrome(OCFS), which is due to bacterial infection during artificial incubation and hatching. Six farmed ostrich chicks aged 3 and 10 days in Chonbuk province, were submitted to Chonbuk Livestock Development and Research Institute for necropsy. Clinically, birds showed hair loss, ocular exudate, lethargy, diarrhea, and subsequently died 3-5 days after onset of clinical signs. Grossly, umbilicus was enlarged. White-yellowish purulent nodules were scattered on the lung and the membrane of air-sac was thickened and had inflamed exudate on the surface in two chicks that died 3 days after hatching. In 10 days-old chick, intestine was shown redding segmentally. Yolk sac was still retarded and its surface was partially hemorrahgic. The synovial fluid of the leg was yellowish. Microscopically, multifocal purulent exudates were scattered on the lung. Capillary microthrombi in the glomerulus were prominent and tubular epithelia were necrotic. Necrotic hepatocytes were scattered and intestine were congested. Microbiologically, Pseudomonas sp and/or E coli were isolated from air-sac, lung and/or liver. This case suggests that poor hygiene during artificial incubation, hatching or in the first week after hatching may cause high mortality of the ostrich chicks.

This study was carried out to provide the fundamental information for development of proper vaccination program against infectious bursal disease(IBD) to the local chicken farms. The antigen detection was performed from 8 samples of bursa of Fabricius with agar gel precipitation(AGP) and indirect immunofluorescent assay(IFA), And also, the antibodies in serum samples were detected by the various serological methods such as commercial ELISA assay, AGP and virus neutralization(VN) test. 1. The antigen detection rates were 25% for AGP which is 2 out of 8 farms and 10 out of 40 bursas, and 25% which is 2 out of 8 farms and 20% 8 out of 40 bursas for IFA, respectively. 2. The mean titer of maternal antibody (>3,000) existed until 10 days of the age with ELISA-GMT. 3. The antibody positive rates which are over 80% showed until 5 days of the age with ELISA and at 10 days of the age with AGP except one, but none of them showed from 1 day of the age. This report came to conclusions that both the protective maternal antibody titers and the antigen positive rates were significant until at the 10 days of the age.

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) infection is a contagious disease of domestic ducks, turkey, and various other birds. In a flock of mallard ducklings, about 30% of the birds, 3 weeks old, showed lethergy, greenish diarrhea, tremor of head and neck, and died 2-3 days after signs appeared. Grossly, fibrinous exudates covered the heart and surface of the live. Microscopically, mononuclear cells and heterophils were primarily inflammatory cells in the exudate. These were also observed in the meninges in brain. Microbiologically, gram (-) short rod bipolar shaped bacteria were recovered on blood agar and agglutinated by antisera of R anatipestifer. Sulfamethoxasole/trimethoprim were administered and clinically effective. This case was a R anatipestifer infection caused fibrinous pericarditis, hepatitis and meningitis in mallards.

Aspergillosis, caused by infection with Aspergillus fumigatus and less commonly by other Aspergillus species, is a prevalent and costly respiratory disease of poultry. In a flock of chicks, the number of birds, 4~5 months old, had become gradually emaciated and subsequently died. Gross necropsy revealed multiple granulomatous masses on the abdominal serosa. The masses, 4~15mm in size, were attached on mainly intestinal wall. Also, the smaller masses in size were on mesentery and pancreas. However, only a few small white nodules were scattered throughout liver and lung in few samples. Microscopically, the mass were granulomatous with a central area of necrosis containing numerous septate, branched fungal hypae consistent with Aspergillus sp. These were surrounded by macrophages, giant cells, lymphocytes and fibrous tissues. Nodular lesions of liver and lung were seemed to spread hemotogenously from intestine and the possible route of infection was speculaled by oral. This report is a Aspergillus-induced granuloma limited to the serosa of abdominal cavity, especially of intestinal wall.

Argulus spp, a small group of parasitic curstaceans called Branchiura, is particularly important in freshwater acquaculture. We investigated the infection of Argulus to several different species of fishes and therapy effect of masoten. Argulus japonicus was collected from Okjeong lake, Chonbuk province and experimen-tally infected to freshwater fishes from July to August 1998. The results were as follows; 1. The shape of a Agulus is an oval and dorsoventrally flattened, with first maxillae and second maxillae, and four pairs of legs. 2. The size of the adult stage of A japonicus was 3.2-5.0×2.3-2.9mm in female and 1.5-3.1×1.6-2.9mm in male. 3. In the trial of experimental infection with A japonicus to non-scaled fishes, Parasilurus asotus and Ictalurus punctalus, were infected and some of them died after severe infection. However, A japonica was not infected at all. 4. Masoten treatment for A japonicus was effective at 0.2 ppm once a day for 3 days and parasites on the surface of fishes disappeared after five days.
한국산 담수어에 기생하는 섬모충 Tripartiella sp에 관한 연구 -잉어, 금붕어 및 메기를 중심으로-

To investigate the species and infection rate of Tripartiella sp in three species of freshwater fish, carp(Cyprinus carpio), goldfish (Crassius auratus) and Korean catfish(Parasilurus asotus), fish cultured in the fish farms next to Yosu and in the western area of Chunbuk province in Korea was examined from April to June, 1996. The infection rate was evaluated after observing the gill and mucous from 130 fish under the microscope. The species of Tripartiella was identified on the basis of the shape and number of denticle according to methods of Bychowsky(1985) after staining the parasites with 2% methy-ene blue solution. All the detected-parasite was classified as Tripartiella differed from Trichodina reported previously in our country. T carassii, T californica, T rhombi from Goldfish, T rhombi from common carp. T californica from Israeli carp and T bychowsky from Korean catfish were observed. In the fish from the fish farms in the western area of Chunbuk province, the infection rate of Tripartiella sp was ranged from 6.7% to 100%, but in neither carp nor goldfish from the farms next to Yosu the parasite detected.
