        Clinical and hematologic variables in animals with experimentally induced leptospirosis

        동물이 렢토스피라균 감염시 나타내는 임상 혈액학적 변화상을 알아보기 위해서 강아지 20두와 햄스터 30두에 인공감염시켜 62일간 관찰하였다. 중요한 임상증세로는 강아지에서 초기에 39℃ 이상되는 체온상승과 전 실험기간에 걸쳐 맥박과 호흡수의 증가 경향이었으며 양군 실험동물에서 접종 후에 심한 원기 쇠약 상태를 나타내었다. 햄스터에서 가장 특징적인 혈액소견은 접종 후 단기간 동안 SGPT, SGOT, BUN 및 creatinine치의 증가였다. 한편 양군의 실험동물은 총적혈구수의 감소를 보였는데 총백혈구치는 초기에 증가경항을 나타냈으며 백혈구 백분비에서는 핵좌방 이동을 동반하는 호중구의 증가와 임파구의 감소 및 단핵구와 호산구의 증가등 다양한 변화를 나타내었다.

        Studies on leucocytozoonosis of chickens in Honam districts

        1992-1993년 호남지방의 4개 양계장에서 처음으로 닭의 Leucocytozoon caulleryi 자연감염증을 보이는 87수를 검색하였는데, 임상증세와 혈액내 merozoite 및 gametocyte 검출 그리고 내장기관으로부터 schizont의 발견으로 본 질병을 확증할 수 있었다. 본 감염증은 일년 중 6월 하순부터 9월 중순까지에 발견되었으며, 자연감염된 혈액(merozoite포함)을 미감염된 닭에 접종하여 인공감염상을 볼 수 있었다. 자연감염후 회복된 닭중 1수는 12월에 간에서, 또 다른 1수는 다음해 2월에 심장 근육에서 schizont가 발견되어 본 감염증의 재발이나 동절기를 지나는 장기간 감염 가능성을 보여 주었다. 본 원충의 gametocyte 추출물에서 특이 항원 항체 반응을 보이는 polypeptide는 50.1kD이었다. In the year 1992/93 leucocytozoonosis could be first diagnbosed in 87 chickens of 4 chicken farms in Honam districts. The diagnosis was confirmed by detection of the blood merozoites or gametocytes and histological finding of the schizonts from various organs with some clinical signs. Cases of leucocytozoonosis only occurred from the end of June to the middle of September. Artificial infection could be observed by means of inoculation of infected blood merozoites. The schizonts were found in the liver and cardiac muscle of the different chickens recovered from the natural infection, respectively, in September and next February. Thus the relapse or long-term infection in cold seasons might be possible. The unique gametocyte antigen polypeptide was 50.1 kD.

        미노클린 첨부제의 구강점막 독성 및 치은조직내에서의 생분해에 관한 연구

        Minocline Strip(MS), a local drug delivery developed as a controlling means for microoragnisms in gingival wound and periodontitis, was implanted in the gingiva of experimental animals. The toxic effects and biodegradation of MS were studied in respect to pathological changes induced in gingival tissue. The experimental animals treated with MS had not showed significant difference in symptom, body weights, feed and water intake, and blood analysis throughout 150 days of experimental period, but revealed significantly increased values of total WBC counts and AST (SGOT) on the 7th day, compared with controls. The treated animals revealed petechial hemorrhage and severe edema accompanying degeneration and necrosis of damaged muscle fibers around the surgical wound, but no local inflammatory reaction and concerned lesions were found. The implanted MS became encapsulated by thin connective tissue, and its size and color diminished gradually according to the experimental term. The MS-like material appeared in the nearby lymphatics on the 110th day. The implated MS remained as fine granular particles or disappeared on the 130th day, and the decrease of its volume and density were variable depending on each individual. These results indicate that long-term implantation of MS may not produce inflammation or toxic effects, and eventually lead to complete biodegradation.

        마우스의 실험적(實驗的) 고사리 중독(中毒)에 관한 병리학적(病理學的) 연구(硏究)

        In order to investigate the effects of bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) on animals, a total of 105 mice given a ration containing different percentage of bracken fern were studied pathologically during the experimental period of 90 days. The results obtained were as follow: 1. Mice in the group, given a ration containing 15% of bracken fern, showed 85% of death rate in 90 days, and mice in the group, given a ration containing 25% of it, showed 100% in 30 days 2. The experimental mice showed decreased myeloid cells and significant reduction in erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes. 3. Severe congestion and hemorrhages were observed in lungs, liver, kidney, spleen, stomach, intestine, brain, adrenal and testis from the ones that died during the experimental period, but the necropsies of the latter period indicated mild chanties comparatively. 4. Mice in the group, given a ration containing 15% blacken fern showed a decreasing tendency in body weight.

        고온(高溫)이 가토갑상선(家兎甲狀腺)에 미치는 영향(影響)

        In order to investigate the effects of high ambient temperature on the thyroid, a total of 50 rabbits (mean weight, 1,294g) reared under $7^{\circ}C$ were alloted to two groups. Rabbits in one group served as controls and the others, after reared under $30^{\circ}C$ for 16 days, were returned to the normal temperature for 16 days. The results obtained in this work were summerized as follows: 1. The weight of the thyroid gland was decreased severely from the 2nd day and increased to normal range on the 4th day after returned to normal temperature. 2. Thyroid follicles were atrophied significantly from the 1/2 day and then enlarged gradually from the 4th day, while their colloid substance also manifested poor staining, coagulation, and disappearence, being reappeared from the 8th day. 3. Hypertrophied follicular epithelial cells showed more enlarged size, degeneratien, necrosis, and mitosis from the 1/2 day in accordance with experimental term and those changes were diminished from the 8th day. 4. Histologically thyroid manifested-hypothyroidism on the 16th day but showed mild hyperthyroidism on the 2nd day and euthyroidism from the 4th day of returned roaring.

        Sulfadimethoxine(SDM) 투여(投與) 가토(家兎)의 난소(卵巢), 갑상선(甲狀腺) 및 뇌하수체(雷下垂體)에 관한 병리학적(病理學的) 연구(硏究)

        In order to investigate the effects and acting mechanism on ovaries, thyroid glands and hypophyses of rabbits in short term administration of sulfadimethoxine (SDM) as medical dose, a total of 90 virgin albino rabbits (mean body weight, 1,362g) were selected at random and alloted to two groups. Rabbits in one group served as controls and the others were administered SDM of 50 mg/kg/day for 5 weeks, and then reared without medication for 4 weeks. Pathological changes of the three organs were observed each week for 9 weeks and the results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Mean body weights of both groups manifested slow increasing tendency but mean hypophysis weights fluctuated throughout the experimental term. Mean ovary weights of experiments were decreased significantly from the 3rd to 6th week but mean thyroid weights of experiments were increased significantly from the 1st to 6th week compared with those of controls. 2. Many ovarian follicles of each developing stage showed follicular atresia accompanying atrophy or necrosis of oocytes and of disintegrated follicular cells. Theca interna cells and sudanophilic interstitial cells showed atrophy and diminished sudanophilic granules and also liquor folliculi were diminished. These changes icreased from the 1st week, remaining so for 5 weeks and returned to normal status in the 8th or 9th week. 3. The thyroid gland showed a typical hyperplastic goiter. Hypertrophic and hyperplastic epithelia follicular manifested cuboidal or columnar form showing tiny or small vacuoles in cytoplasm. The follicles showed atrophy and decreasing colloidal materials. Necrotic and regenerative changes were also present. The interfollicular vessels showed congestion and hemorrhage. These changes increased from the 1st week, remaining so for 5 weeks and returned to normal status in the 9th week. 4. The rates of differential cell counts of hypophyses revealed increase of basophils (gonadotrophs and thyrotrophs) and decrease of chromophobes. Basophils which had diminished granules stainable with HE, PAS and AF revealed hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and increasing of tiny or small vacuoles in cytoplasm. These changes increased from the 1st week, remaining so for 5 weeks and returned to normal status in the 8th or 9th week. As summarized above histologically, administration of SDM led thyrotrophs and gonadotrophs of pituitary glands to hyperactivity but revealed retrogressive and compensatory changes with functional disturbance in ovaries and thyroid glands. These changes were transitional and attributed to direct actions of the drugs on the ovaries and thyroid glands.
