베타선 방출 핵종 측정을 위한 프로토 타입(prototype) 액체섬광검출기를 개발하고 이의 특성을 분석하였다. 액체섬광계수시스템의 신호처리부는 2개의 광전자증배관(photomultiplier tube, PMT)과 동시 계수 회로를 이용하여 구성하였다. 제작한 프로토 타입 시스템의 특성 분석을 위하여 4종류의 베타 핵종 $(^3H,\;^{14}C,\;^{36}Cl,\;^{90}Sr)$에 대한 샘플을 조제하여 베타 스펙트럼을 측정하였다. 차폐체를 전혀 사용하지 않은 상태에서 측정한 4종류의 핵종에 대한 베타 스펙트럼을 구하고, 최소 검출 한계를 계산한 다음, 법적 규제치 및 계산된 검출한계와 비교하였다. 이들 대부분의 선원들은 수분이내의 측정으로 배수중 방사선물질에 대한 법적 규제치 이하로 충분히 검출 가능함을 확인하였다. A prototype liquid scillatillator system for measurement of multiple beta-labeled mixtures was developed and its characteristic was investigated. The signal processing system consists of two photomultiplier tubes and the coincident count circuit. The characteristic of the system was analyzed using 4 beta-labeled samples $(^3H,\;^{14}C,\;^{36}Cl\;and\;^{90}Sr)$. Beta spectra from the samples were obtained without radiation shielding, and the detection limits for each nuclides were estimated based on the spectra. The estimated detection limits were compared to the legal regulation values. It is found that the liquid radioactive nuclides are detectable well below the legal regulation values.

We designed, developed and characterized a multi-segmented tissue equivalent proportional (TEPC) counter for microdosimetry. The energy resolution of the multi-segmented TEPC was about 12% for 241Am 5.45 MeV alpha particles. The resolution was better than 33% for a single un-segmented TEPC. A compact and low power consumption TEPC could be made by using digital pulse processor (DPP). We also successfully calibrated the TEPC by using 252Cf standard neutron source in Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). According to the results, the TEPC is useful for several application of radiation monitoring such as a neutron monitor, air crew monitor and space dosimeter.

TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter) was usually used for high LET radiation dosimetry. We developed a prototype TEPC for micro-dosimetry in the range of 0.2~300 keV/μm. And, the simulated site diameter of the TEPC is 2 μm, of similar size to a cell nucleus. For purposes of characterization the response for high LET radiation of the TEPC has been investigated under 135MeV/u Carbon ions in HIMAC (Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator). We determined the gas multiplication factor and measured the lineal energy spectrum [yd(y)] of 135 MeV/u Carbon ions. The value of the gas multiplication factor was 315 at 700 V bias voltage. As a result of the experiment, we could more understand the performance of the TEPC for high LET (Linear Energy Transfer) radiation. And the procedure of high LET radiation dosimetry using TEPC is established.

We have developed a measurement system with which harmful radio noise can be detected. It was designed to cover 1GHz band width centered at l.5GHz and 22.2GHz ($H_2O$ line).The system consists of pyramid horn antennas, receivers, equatorial tracking system, spectrum analyzer, and PC for the control of the servo and data taking. As a test of the system, the site of Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) was investigated to see if there is any harmful radio interference. It is found that in 22GHz band there is no significant radio noise, but there are identified and unidentified artificial radio signals in 1-2GHz range. However a simple calculation of radiation power shows that it is week enough not to affect the observations in TRAO.

In this paper we describe MS-TCS, the telescope control system which was developed in Korea Astronomy Observatory. MS-TCS can control an equatorial type telescope equipped with stepping motors and incremental type optical encoders. MS-TCS consists of (1) POINT_TEL which is the program roning in a PC and (2) TCS-196 which is the electroics board to control the telescope. The communication between the PC and TCS-l96 is done through RS-232 or RS-422 serial line. MS-TCS can control the secondary mirror and dome. It also provide network function using TCP/IP for remote control of the telescope. MS-TCS is suitable for controlling medium to small size telescope for research and education.

We have developed a control electronics system for an infrared detector array of KASINICS (KASI Near Infrared Camera System), which is a new ground-based instrument of the Korea Astronomy and Space science Institute (KASI). Equipped with a $512{\times}512$ InSb array (ALADDIN III Quadrant, manufactured by Raytheon) sensitive from 1 to $5{\mu}m$, KASINICS will be used at J, H, Ks, and L-bands. The controller consists of DSP(Digital Signal Processor), Bias, Clock, and Video boards which are installed on a single VME-bus backplane. TMS320C6713DSP, FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array), and 384-MB SDRAM(Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) are included in the DSP board. DSP board manages entire electronics system, generates digital clock patterns and communicates with a PC using USB 2.0 interface. The clock patterns are downloaded from a PC and stored on the FPGA. UART is used for the communication with peripherals. Video board has 4 channel ADC which converts video signal into 16-bit digital numbers. Two video boards are installed on the controller for ALADDIN array. The Bias board provides 16 dc bias voltages and the Clock board has 15 clock channels. We have also coded a DSP firmware and a test version of control software in C-language. The controller is flexible enough to operate a wide range of IR array and CCD. Operational tests of the controller have been successfully finished using a test ROIC (Read-Out Integrated Circuit).

The International Space Station (ISS) orbits the Earth within the inner radiation belt, where high-energy protons are produced by collisions of cosmic rays to the upper atmosphere. About 6 astronauts stay in the ISS for a long period, and it should be important to monitor and assess the radiation environment in the ISS. The tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) is an instrument to measure the impact of radiation on the human tissue. KASI is developing a TEPC as a candidate payload of the ISS. Before the detailed design of the TEPC, we performed simulations to test whether our conceptual design of the TEPC will work propertly in the ISS and to predict its performance. The simulations estimated that the TEPC will measure the dose equivalent of about 1:1 mSv during a day in the ISS, which is consistent with previous measurements.

조직등가비례계수기는 우주에서의 복잡한 방사선 환경에서 방사선의 선에너지전이 스펙트럼을 측정하여 등가선량을 측정할 수 있는 검출기이다. 본 연구에서는 국제우주정거장에서 방사선량 모니터링에 활용할 수 있은 조직등가비례계수기를 개발하고 그 특성을 평가하였다. 소형 디지털화된 조직등가비례계수기는 미소선량측정을 위하여 직경 2 μm 크기의 선량을 모사하도록 설계 제작하였다. 개발된 검출기는 한국표준연구원의 252Cf 중성자 표준선원으로 교정하였으며, 채널- 선에너지전이 교정계수는 0.2 keV/μm-CH 이었다 Tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) can measure the LET spectrum and calculate the equivalent dose for the complicated radiation field in space. In this paper, we developed and characterized a TEPC for radiation monitoring in International Space Station (ISS). The compact digital type TEPC which can simulate a 2 μm of the site diameter for micro-dosimetry has been tested with 252Cf neutron standard source in KRISS. The determined calibration factor of channel-LET was about 0.2 keV/μm-CH.

한국우주전파관측망(KVN) 4 주파수 동시관측시스템의 각 수신기에는 전파 신호를 디지털 신호로 바꾸는 샘플러가 있다. 이 장치는 전파 신호를 처리하는 중요한 구성으로서, 샘플러의 성능에 따라 관측의 품질에 영향을 준다. 이 구성 장비의 자체 제작 능력 및 기반 기술을 확보하여 효율적이고 양질의 관측이 이루어 질 수 있도록 할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 KVN 샘플러의 국산화를 위하여, GHz 샘플러 Proto-Type을 설계하고 제작하였다. 이는 KVN 확대 사업 수행 시 시스템 자체 개발 능력을 키우고, 고속 거대 전파 관측 시스템을 구축하는 국제 공동 연구에 기술 참여를 하며, 차세대 우주 탐사 지원을 위한 기술 토대가 될 것이다. 이에 그 내용을 소개하고자 한다.
400 MeV/u 탄소 이온에 대한 방사선치료 선량 측정용 고체비적검출기의 교정

본 연구에서는 탄소이온을 이용한 고LET 방사선 치료시 CR-39 고체비적검출기(SSNTD)를 선량계로 사용하기 위하여 일본 중입자가속기연구소(HIMAC)의 400 MeV/u 탄소 이온을 이용한 교정실험을 수행하였다. 탄소 이온을 조사한 CR-39 검출기는 일본 우주항공연구개발기구(JAXA)의 고체비적검출기 전처리 프로토콜에 따라 화학적 에칭을 하였고, 에칭된 CR-39 검출기의 표면에 형성된 트랙은 디지털 카메라로 촬영한 후 Image J를 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 400 MeV/u 탄소 이온의 yF와 yD는 각각 8.5 keV/μm 및 10.1 keV/μm이었으며, 이 결과는 한국천문연구원의 조직등가비례계수기(TEPC)로 측정한 값 및 GEANT4 몬테칼로 시뮬레이션으로 계산한 값과 잘 일치하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 CR-39의 선량 및 LET 교정인자를 결정할 수 있었으며, 고LET 방사선 치료시 CR-39를 이용한 선량평가의 가능성을 확인하였다. In this study, equivalent dose and LET (Linear Energy Transfer) calibration of CR-39 SSNTD (Solid State Nuclear Track Detector) were performed using 400 MeV/u C heavy ions in HIMAC (Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba) for high LET radiation therapy. The irradiated CR-39 SSNDTs were etched according the etching condition of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). And the etched SSNTDs were analyzed by using Image J. Determined frequency mean dose ( yD )and dose-mean lineal energy ( yF )of 400 MeV/u C are about 8.5keV/mm and 10.1 keV/mm, respectively by using the CR-39 SSNTD. This value is very similar to the results calculated by GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation and measured with TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter) active radiation detector. We could determine the equivalent dose and LET calibration factors of CR-39. And we confirmed that the CR-39 SSNTD was useful for high LET radiation dosimetry in hadron radiotherapy.
