To investigate the possible isosteric replacement of imidazolidinone moiety in 4-phenyl-N-arylsulfonylimidazolidinone for broad and potent anticancer agents, a series of 4-phenyl-l(N)-arylsulfonylimidazolidinones 6a-k, imidazolidinethione analogs 7a-i, and imidazolidine oxime analogs 8a-c were prepared and evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activity against four human cancer cell lines (human lung A549, human colon COLO205, human leukemia K562, human ovary SK-OV-3). Among all the derivatives of N-arylsulfonylimidazolidinone 6a-k, compounds 6f and 6g showed the best inhibition comparable to doxorubicin against all cancer cell lines. Increasing the carbon chain on alkyl moieties of carbamates as shown in 6c-g did not alter the activity. The imidazolidinethione analogs 7a-i and imidazolidin-2-one oxime derivatives 8a-c did not possess any good activity. Therefore, imidazolidinone moiety is the best pharmacophore among the 4-phenyl-Narylsulfonylimidazolidinone derivatives.

The Hydrodynamic stability equations for natural cenvection flows adjacent to a inclined iso-thermal surface in cold pure water, constitute a two-point-boundary-value (eigenvalue) problem, which was solved numerically using the simple shooting (code-BOUNDS) and orthogonal collocation (code-COLSYS) method. We found the neutral stability curves and eigenvectors. It is possible from the numerical results to predict the physical conditions on neutral stability of the base flow generated by natural convection abjacent to a inclined isothermal plate in cold pure water.

Twenty-three cases of palliative surgery were done for tetra logy of Fallot; fifteen cases of Glenn operation, three Brock, and five Blalock operation. There were four cases of operative mortality, three due to anoxia and one due to aspiration pneumonia on the opposite lung. Two cases of late death occurred, one during postoperative empyema drainage and the other due to acute superior vena cava syndrome followed by right upper lobe pneumonia, two years after Glenn operation. A twenty years old girl was complicated by left hemiplegia post-operatively probably due to hypoxia during operation. After two months physio-therapy, motility of the muscles recovered except some residual weakness of the small hand muscles. All the survivors showed beneficial effects of palliative surgery; increased exercise tolerance and pulmonary vascularity. Decrease of dyspnea and cyanosis was remarkable. Survivors were followed for one month to four years. During this period four cases expired without surgery, while waiting for admission.

Background/Aims: Irsogladine maleate, an enhancer of gastric mucosal protective factors, has demonstrated its efficacy for various gastric mucosal injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of irsogladine for prevention of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin-induced peptic ulcer and gastritis. Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, exploratory clinical trial, 100 patients over 50 years of age who needed continuous NSAIDs or aspirin for more than 8 weeks were randomly assigned to either test group (irsogladine maleate 2 mg, twice daily, 39 patients for full analysis) or placebo group (37 patients for full analysis). Primary outcomes were incidence of peptic ulcer and ratio of modified Lanza score (MLS) 2 to 4. Secondary outcome was the number of acute erosions confirmed by endoscopy at 8 weeks. Adverse effects were also compared. Results: There were no significant differences in gastric protective effects between test and placebo groups. However, two cases of peptic ulcer in the placebo group but none in the test group were observed. These two cases of peptic ulcer were Helicobacter pylori-negative. In addition, H. pylori-negative group showed significant changes in MLS score (p = 0.0247) and edema score (p = 0.0154) after the treatment compared to those before treatment in the test group. There was no significant difference in adverse events between the two groups. Conclusions: The efficacy of irsogladine maleate was found in H. pylori-negative group, suggesting its potential as a protective agent against NSAIDs or aspirin-induced peptic ulcer and gastritis.
3-D System-on-System (SoS) Biomedical-Imaging Architecture for Health-Care Applications

<P>This paper presents the implementation of a 3-D architecture for a biomedical-imaging system based on a multilayered system-on-system structure. The architecture consists of a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor image sensor layer, memory, 3-D discrete wavelet transform (3D-DWT), 3-D Advanced Encryption Standard (3D-AES), and an RF transmitter as an add-on layer. Multilayer silicon (Si) stacking permits fabrication and optimization of individual layers by different processing technology to achieve optimal performance. Utilization of through silicon via scheme can address required low-power operation as well as high-speed performance. Potential benefits of 3-D vertical integration include an improved form factor as well as a reduction in the total wiring length, multifunctionality, power efficiency, and flexible heterogeneous integration. The proposed imaging architecture was simulated by using Cadence Spectre and Synopsys HSPICE while implementation was carried out by Cadence Virtuoso and Mentor Graphic Calibre.</P>

<P>To test whether chronic enhanced blood flow alters insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, we measured skeletal muscle glucose uptake in chow-fed and high-fat-fed mice injected with adenovirus containing modified angiopoietin-1, COMP-Ang1, via euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp. Blood flow rates and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 positive endothelial cells in the hindlimb skeletal muscle were elevated in COMP-Ang1 compared with control LacZ. Whole body glucose uptake and whole body glycogen/lipid synthesis were elevated in COMP-Ang1 compared with LacZ in chow diet. High-fat diet significantly reduced whole body glucose uptake and whole body glycolysis in LacZ mice, whereas high-fat-fed COMP-Ang1 showed a level of whole body glucose uptake that was comparable with chow-fed LacZ and showed increased glucose uptake compared with high-fat-fed LacZ. Glucose uptake and glycolysis in gastrocnemius muscle of chow-fed COMP-Ang1 were increased compared with chow-fed LacZ. High-fat diet-induced whole body insulin resistance in the LacZ was mostly due to approximately 40% decrease in insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in skeletal muscle. In contrast, COMP-Ang1 prevented diet-induced skeletal muscle insulin resistance compared with high-fat-fed LacZ. Akt phosphorylation in skeletal muscle was increased in COMP-Ang1 compared with LacZ in both chow-fed and high-fat-fed groups. These results suggest that increased blood flow by COMP-Ang1 increases insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and prevents high-fat diet-induced insulin resistance in skeletal muscle.</P>
