        First Record of a Clingfish, Aspasma minima (Perciformes: Gobiesocidae) from Korea

        A specimen of Aspasma minima (25.4 mm SL) belonging to the family Gobiesocidae was collected from coastal waters near Hamdeok in Jeju Island, Korea. This species is haracterized by having 6~9 dorsal fin rays, 5~9 anal fin rays, 20~24 pectoral fin rays, many red spots on head and body when fresh, and posterior end of upper jaw not reaching anterior margin of eye. Our specimen is well matched in its morphological characteristics with previous descriptions of A. minima. Thus, we newly add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name, “Kkoma-hak-chi”.

        제주 연안해역 어란의 분자동정과 분포양상

        이 연구는 제주도 주변 4개의 정점에서 채집된 어란의 월별종조성 및 출현량을 알아보기 위해 실시하였다. 현장조사는 2006년 8월부터 2007년 7월까지 봉고네트를 이용하여 월별로표층채집을 하였으며, 종동정은 채집된 어란의 미토콘드리아cytochrome b 유전자 (cyt b) 염기서열을 성어 염기서열과 상호비교함으로써 이루어졌다. 채집된 어란은 총 43개의 분류군으로 분류되었고, 이중 34종 (6목 24과 33속)은 종 (species)까지동정이 이루어졌다. 나머지 9종 가운데 4종은 과 (family)까지동정할 수 있었고, 5종은 미동정되었다. 지역별로 제주항 근해에서는 23개의 분류군으로 가장 많은 분류군이 나타났고, 성상포 근해에서 21개, 서귀포항 근해에서 19개, 차귀도 근해에서는 18개의 분류군이 출현하였다. 시기별로는 2006년 9월에15개의 분류군으로 가장 많이 나타났고, 12월과 7월에 3개의분류군으로 가장 적게 나타났다. 동정이 이루어진 34종 중 멸치 (E. japonicus)와 노랑벤자리 (C. japonicus)가 가장 높은 출현 빈도를 보였으며, 멸치는 표층수온 14.0~28.6℃에서, 노랑벤자리는 14.9~20.5℃에서 출현하였다. 이번 연구에서 사용된 cyt b 유전자의 PCR 증폭 성공률은 68.3%였으며, 종동정률은 79.1%였다. Monthly variation of species composition and abundance of fish eggs were examined to know the spawning time and location of the fishes inhabiting the coastal region of Jejudo Island. Samplings had been performed at the four locations (Jeju port, Seongsanpo, Seogwipo port and Chagwido) with a bongo net which was towed monthly at the sea surface from August 2006 to July 2007. The fish eggs were identified based on phylogenetic analyses with the DNA sequences generated through PCR-amplification and sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Among a total of 43 taxa classified during the study period, 34 were identified to species, 4 to families, and the remaining 5 were unidentified. Of them, 23 taxa were occurred at Jeju port, 21 at Seongsanpo, 19 at Seogwipo port and 18 at Chagwido, whereas 15 taxa were found in September 2006, 12 in June 2007, 6 to 8 in August 2006 and January~May 2007, 5 in each October and November 2006, 3 in each December 2006 and July 2007. Among 34 species of fish eggs, Engraulis japonicus and Callanthias japonicus most frequently appeared at 16 times out of 48 observations in total. When those eggs were collected, the surface seawater temperature ranged 14.0~28.6°C for E. japonicus and 14.9~20.5°C for C. japonicus. The success rates of PCR-amplification and species identification in this study were 68.3% and 79.1%, respectively.

        New Record of the Black-Velvet Angelfish, Chaetodontoplus melanosoma (Pomacanthidae, Perciformes) from Korea

        This is the first report of Chaetodontoplus melanosoma, belonging to the family Pomacanthidae, collected in Korea. The specimen (123.1 mm in standard length) was caught in the coastal waters of Jejudo Island by a trammel net on 23 February 2010. This species was characterized by the following morphological traits: 26 dorsal fin rays, 16 pectoral fin rays, 6 pelvic fin, 21 anal fin rays, no blue strips on the body, no markings behind the eye, and an egg-shaped faint black spot on the base of the pectoral fin. We suggest a new Korean name “Geom-eun-cheong-jul-dom” for C. melanosoma.

        First Record of a Gaper Champsodon longipinnis (Perciformes: Champsodontidae) from Korea

        This is the first report of Champsodon longipinnis (Champsodontidae) collected from Korea. The specimen (100.9 mm in standard length) was caught by a bottom trawl in the coastal waters off Busan, Korea. This species is characterized by the following morphological traits: body with small denticulate scales except abdomen around pelvic fin base; posterior end of maxilla extending beyond margin of eye; dark pigmentation on most of the first dorsal fin, upper half of the first to the fourth soft ray of the second dorsal fin, and partial upper lobe of caudal fin. We add C. longipinnis to the Korean fish fauna and suggest a new Korean name, “Jeom-ak-eo-chi,” for the species.

        제주해역 참문어(Octopus vulgaris)의 어획실태와 생식생태

        The purpose of this study is to provide information about annual variations in catch size and changes in reproductive biology in the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, a commercially important species in Jeju Island. Samples were collected from coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea by coastal trap fishery from January to November 2021. Octopus vulgaris have been decreasing in this region since 1984. The mantle length (ML) ranged from 4.5 to 17.8 cm and body weight (BW) ranged form 88.5 to 2,657.5 g. A χ 2 -test revealed that the number of males was significantly greater than females (χ 2 = 32.712, df = 10, P<0.05). Mature females were found from January to July and male occurred January to August. The gonadosomatic index value was higher from July to August than other months. The relationship between mantle length and body weight was BW = 2.4527ML 2.3139 (female) and BW = 2.6785ML 2.3159 (male). At 50% group maturity, female and male average weight was estimated to be 554.7 g and 330.6 g, respectively.

        제주도 사계연안 어란의 분자동정과 격월별 출현양상

        This study investigated the species composition and abundance of floating fish eggs to determine the timing and locationof spawning of fish inhabiting the coastal waters of Sagye, Jejudo Island. Eggs were collected with a Bongo netbimonthly from May 2009 to February 2010. Identifications were based on nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrialcytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Eggs were determined to belong to 43 distinct taxa, 35 of which wereidentified to the species level. The assemblage spanned eight orders, 23 families, and 32 genera. The number of taxacollected varied from month to month, with 14 taxa (12 species) found in June 2009, 11 taxa (10 species) in October2009, 10 taxa (nine species) each in August 2009 and February 2010, eight taxa (six species) in April 2009, and fivetaxa (four species) in December 2009. Five abundant species (Branchiostegus japonicus, Engraulis japonicus, Pseudolabrussieboldi, Goniistius zonatus, and Halichoeres tenuispinis) together represented 52.8% of the total number ofeggs collected during the study.

        한국산 둥글넙치과 어류 1 미기록종 Asterorhombus intermedius

        둥글넙치과에 속하는 Asterorhombus intermedius 2개체(표준체장 130.0~143.4 mm)가 제주도 서귀포 시 안덕면 사계리 해역에서 처음으로 채집되었다. 이 종은 첫 번째 등지느러미 주위에 많은 돌기들이 산재하고, 몸과 지느러미에 크기가 다른 어두운 점들이 산재하고 있다. 이 미기록종의 속명과 국명은 각각 "깃털둥글넙치 속"과 "깃털둥글넙치"로 제안하였다. Two specimens of Asterorhombus intermedius (130.0~143.4 mm SL), belonging to the family Bothidae, were firstly collected from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea, This species was characterized by having 54~56 lateral line scales, first dorsal-fin ray with a long projection, and various size of black spots on the body, The morphological characteristics matched well with previous description of A. intermedius. Therefore, we add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its Korean name, "Git-teol-dung-geul-neob-chi-sok" and "Git-teol-dung-geul-neob-chi" for the genus and species, respectively.

        한국산 바리과(family Serranidae) 어류 1 미기록종, Epinephelus radiatus

        바리과(family Serranidae), 능성어아과(subfamily Epinephelinae)에 속하는 Epinephelus radiatus 1개체가 제주도 서귀포시 마라도 주변 해역에서 채집되었다. 본 종은 체측을 가로지르는 5개의 불규칙한 암갈색의 대각선 줄무늬와 측선비늘수 107개, 측선비늘공수 55개의 형태적 특징을 갖고 있다. 형태적으로 유사한 바리과 어류인 닻줄바리(E. poecilonotus)는 체측에 긴 수평 줄무늬를 가지는 반면, E. radiatus는 체측의 앞에서 뒤쪽으로대각선 모양의 불규칙한 줄무늬를 가지고 있어서 쉽게 구분할 수 있다. 이 종의 새로운 국명은 우리나라 최남단섬인 마라도 인근 해역에서 처음으로 채집되었기 때문에 “마라바리”로 명명하였다 A single serranid specimen of Epinephelus radiatus was collected by a hook for the commercial longline fisheries occurred near Marado, Jeju Island, Korea. The present specimen was characterized by five irregular dark brown bands passing downward and forward from upper edge of body, scales in longitudinal row 107, and pored lateral line scales 55. This species is easily distinguishable from the morphologically similar Korean serranid species of E. poecilonotus based on band patterns on body. That is, the former has five irregular oblique dark-edged brown bands, and the latter has several long horizontal bands on lateral body. We propose a new Korean name, “Ma-ra-bari,”for Epinephelus radiatus.
