        영어교육의 궁극적인 목표는 영어로 의사전달을 할 수 있는 능력을 배양하는 데 있다. 그러나 우리 주변에서는 수년에 걸친 영어교육에도 불구하고 그런 능력이 부족한 학생들을 많이 볼 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 주로 전통적인 문법위주 교육에 기인하고 있는 것으로 생각되며 그 대안으로서 의사전달을 위한 실제적인 언어사용에 중점을 둔 교육방법이 제시되고 있다. 의사전달능력의 배양을 위한 효과적인 접근방법에는 무엇(what)을 어떻게(how)교육시켜야 되는가라는 두가지 요소를 포함시켜야 한다. 이것은 결국 적절한 교수요목(syllabus)과 교수법(methodology)의 개발문제로 귀결된다. 본 논문에서는 이 문제를 다루기 위한 구체적인 연구과제로 (1)교수요목뫄 교수법의 정의 및 차이점 비교,(2)주요 교수요목의 유형ㅇ과 각 유형의 장단점 분석,(3)이들의 장점을 선별하여 의사전달능력을 배양할 수 있는 통합된 교수요목 모형의 개발,(4)의사전달기술 습득을 극대화시킬 수 있는 교수법의 개발,(5)이 교수법을 실제로 교육에 구현할 수 있는 교재개발 등을 취급하고자 한다.

      • Teaching Vocabulary in the ESL/EFL Classroom

        The teaching and learning of vocabulary has never aroused the same degree of interest as have such issues as grammar, listening, speaking, reading, or writing. The apparent neglect of vocabulary reflects the effects of trends in modern leaching methodology including the once popular audiolingual method. At the begining stages of second-language instruction the audiolingual method places much more emphasis on the structural signals and grammatical patterns of the language than on vocabulary. At this level we are primarily· concerned with such structrual matters as word forms, function words, and word order. As a rule instruction in votabulary is delayed until it gets under way at the intermediate level. Word use is a vital skill in its own right, and instruction in vocabulary should not be delayed. The present paper considers the role of vocabulary teaching in the ESL/EFL classrom in the light of theoretical assumptions and their implications, teaching techniques, and common vocabulary errors made by Korean students of English.

        영어를 공부하는 한국 학생들에게 영어의 감각동사는 어려운 문제를 제기한다. 이 문제는 감각동사의 의미구조와 두 언어 사이에 나타나는 문법구조상의 차이에서 찾아 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 세 가지 문제를 다루고 있다. 첫째로 감각동사의 의미구조와 문법구조의 상관관계를 구명하고, 둘째로 영어와 한국어 감각동사의 구조적 특성을 고찰하고, 셋째로 한국 학생들이 영어의 감각동사 습득과정에서 당면하는 문제점을 찾아 내는 것을 주요 내용으로 하고 있다. 효과적인 외국어 교육은 무엇(what)을 어떻게(how)가르쳐야 하는 가에 달려 있다. 본 연구는 가르칠 내용을 준비함에 있어서 무엇을 고려해야 하고 또한 어떻게 가르치는 것이 효과적인가에 관한 방법론을 제시하는데 목적을 주고 있다.

        조기 영어교육의 실태와 바람직한 방향 : 우리나라 초등학교 영어교육을 중심으로

        This paper aims to find out the current state of early English education in the world(including Korea) and to suggest its more desirable direction, with special reference to TEFL in elementary school of Korea. In fact English teaching in elementary schools of Korea has been put into practice as an extracurricular activity since 1982. But in 1995 the Ministry of Education proclaimed a policy to establish a TEFL program as the regular course in elementary schools of Korea since 1997. In this connection, the writer surveyed several kinds of theories about early English education to verify the necessity and validity of Korea's elementary school English education. The logical result from these theories is that younger children are better equipped to learn foreign languages with efficiency than older children or adults. However, as most studies are based on logical inferences rather than on direct observation or experimental evidence, we are not sure that those theories are right. In this view, the writer put stress on the preparation of educational environments to establish a more desirable direction of early English education in Korea, since Korea's elementary school English education will be practiced under EFL environment, not ESL environment. The writer also pointed out some problems of educational finances, the curriculum development process and its content, teaching materials(textbooks and tapes), English teachers, teaching methods evaluation, educational facilities. This paper concludes that we have to try to solve these problems to succeed in a TEFL program in elementary schools of Korea and suggests several things for a more desirable direction of Korea's elementary school English education.
