A Harmony of the Masculine and the Feminine in the Patriarchal Society

Vol.9 No.1

When Virginia Woolf published Night and Day in 1919, the longest of her nine novels, some critics disapproved of her work on that she followed the paradigm of 19th century traditional novel, contrary to short fictions such as "Kew Gardens", "The Mark on the Wall", and "An Unwritten Novel" published in those almost same years. This novel did not meet their expectations of her as one of the representative modernists. However, the negative criticism resulted from the disparity between form and content, that is, from the evaluation focused on the traditional narrative form and common subject matter of this novel, rather disregarding its thematic character. As suggested in the title of Night and Day, there are many contradictory and antithetical elements in elusive and indefinable life, which are complernents each of the other and so should be respected as an independent being, such as nature and reason, intuition and intellect, thought and act, freedom and duty, and femininity and masculinity. This paper is to study the harmonious relations of male and female individuality in Night and Day, which is a psychological novel on the quest for love and marriage developed from the ideal friendship between Katherine who is prisoned in her family life with the duty as an obedient daughter to the fathers but seeks independence from the patriarchs and Ralph who bears the burden of family support as an unconverntional lawyer. They, together with their mutual respect and understanding, will lead an ideal marriage life enjoying their individual privacy symbolized as night as well as sharing their spiritual communion, different from those of the future Rodneys or the Hilberys.

Vol.53 No.-

The purpose of this paper is to study a consoling and healing power of writing with hallucinations which are 'an unconscious, instinctive, saving resort on the part of the characters,' and also to examine Bowen's own writing strategy for survival in war-time and her unique artistic achievement in this unnatural and surreal atmosphere of “Mysterious Kôr.” Elizabeth Bowen's “Mysterious Kôr,” named after the great ruined city of Rider Haggard's She, posits hallucination or life lived within the unconscious as a representation of self-protection and safety, not of trauma, terror or sadness. The wartime city provided aesthetic inspiration for Bowen, who as an ARP warden literally walked of the city amidst a terrain of bomb craters and desecrated buildings and herself directly experienced the homelessness by her London house's successive damage. For Bowen, seeking her own personal landmarks, Kôr, an imaginative refuge from linear, measurable time and, indeed, from the nightmare of history, represented an eternal city in the midst of “weird moonlight over bomb-pitted London.” Her fantasy city Kor is a place for the soul to seek safety when there is literally no refuge for the body. Bowen thought the fantasies and dreams of ordinary people were consoling compensation for what she called the 'desiccation' that the war brought out. The moon-drenched blitzed London is full of the terrible tensions of the war mixed with the lovers' intense feelings toward their vulnerable future. Hallucination becomes a private place to escape in a city where the concept of privacy has lost all meaning.

Vol.50 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to study a feminine mode of writing which tries to surpass the discourse that regulates the phallocentric system in “Bliss” of Katherine Mansfield, who achieved a wonderful aesthetic balance between form and subject in terms of protean images and symbols and an ironic subversion of traditional narrative story patterns. As an important and representative feminine text, “Bliss” cannot fail to be more than subversive and controversial in depicting the distinctive nature of women’s sexual desire by transferring women from object to subject position and focussing upon this subject as a being of ardent, though repressed, passions. In “Bliss” Mansfield portrays Bertha’s dedicated and consistent, if subconscious, attempt to find an objective correlative for her feeling of ‘absolute bliss’. This bliss she experiences blossoms out of her depth as a homoerotic desire for Pearl Fulton. Through her awakening moment of feminine communion, she finds her feminine sexuality and her potentiality of being a woman of her own. However, the ironic reversal of the story’s ending puts the question of women’s subjectivity and consequent possibility of feminine writing into unexpected doubt. Bertha’s heavenly bliss and earthly frustration represent the writer’s achievement and limits of her writing at once in her society of snobbism and sterile pretensions of men. Mansfield projects into Bertha, the artist manque, her own desire of self-revelation as an alien woman in the English artist society.

Computer Mediation in Collaborative Writing Activities for Young Children

2006 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.12 No.2

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of computer mediation on the interaction patterns of young children in collaborative writing activities. Forty two five-year-old children were encouraged to write the following three tasks in pairs, the Kid pix program, word processing, and the hand writing activity. The interaction patterns differed according to the type of tasks and the gender of dyads. The Kid pix program engendered collaborative interaction in all gender types of dyads, and the word processing activity stimulated the contentious interaction of male gender dyads. In the hand writing activity, all genders of dyads showed parallel behavior without any interaction. These results suggest that computers stimulate more frequent interaction between children compared to non-computer activities. Children’s interaction time was assessed to investigate the interest in writing with a computer in a collaborative activity. It was found that paired children spent more of their time working on the Kid pix program compared to other activities.

Vol.35 No.1

The purpose of this paper is to study the true meaning of mysterious life in Silas Marner, in which George Eliot described the remedial influences of pure and natural human relationships and its nemesis based on morality. Silas Marner, the weaver of Raveloe, who lost all hope due to the false accusation of theft by his inborn cataleptic fit, was rescued by the influence of innocent little Eppie from the insect-like existence into which his nature shrank. And Godfrey Cass, the eldest of Squire Cass who was the greatest man in Raveloe, permanently suffered from his immorality. Even though Silas Marner has been treated as a minor work by some critics because of its fable style, it has been widely read for that very same reason.Eliot successfully depicted the complexity and the fortuitousness of life on the basis of her moral consciousness in this realistic novel full of dramatic ironies and fairy tale elements such as Silas's catalepsy and the appearance of Eppie on New Year's Eve.

Vol.50 No.-

This essay conducts a close reading of Elizabeth Bowen’s short story, “The Disinherited” (1934). The story betrays the grotesque vision of the spiritual malaise, dislocation, moral corruption, and horrifying cruelty in the economically depressed and psychologically confusing 1930s’ England. The dark vision is encapsulated in a juxtaposition of three different social classes: the parasitic lives ex-aristocrats led, a deviational late-night gathering a middle-class woman happened to join in, and the macabre tales a lower-class chauffeur enumerated in a gruesome, fragmentary and repetitious manner. Bowen depicts the harmful consequences of the disordered social structure and disoriented conventional values resulting from paralyzed passion and moral bankruptcy, together with detailed descriptions of changing seasons or morbidly uncanny dream-like atmosphere and sombre scenes in question. In particular, this essay elaborates on the significance of the chauffeur’s confessional monologue in the story. For it is not a mere fantasy weakening the story’s ingenuity and subtlety, but works for the ‘single effect’ central to the short story genre with its poetic and dramatic experiment.
