A Strategic Approach to Comprehending English Scientific and Technical Texts

The purpose of this paper is to explore effective teaching and learning strategies for better reading comprehension of English scientific and technical (EST) texts. This paper evaluates the efficacy of two domains of strategies that can be learned to improve better reading comprehension of EST texts. One is conventional strategies, general strategies that should be used regardless of a genre; the other is rhetorical strategies, genre-specific strategies that should be applied to the genre of EST. To determine whether reading comprehension of EST texts is improved through the use of genre-specific strategies, an experiment was conducted with a treatment group who were systematically instructed in two strategies, and a control group who were taught on a traditional grammar-translation basis. The findings show that there is a significant difference in reading comprehension scores of EST texts between the two groups. The results undoubtedly demonstrate the advantage of a strategic approach for reading EST texts.

Backshifting is treated as 'reported speech' or 'indirect speech' in traditional grammar. The phenomenon, however, has much wider applications than reported speech. That is, the reported speech is just one of the cases where backshifting is applied, which has been confirmed by many linguistic studies. In this study, firstly, the conditions of backshifting were examined, and then the meanings of backshifted preterite were examined. Secondly, it is discussed whether backshifting is optional or obligatory, and further under which conditions it happens if it is obligatory. The findings show that pragmatic conditions act to select backshifting. Finally, it is seen that backshifting can occur in complex structure as well as in simple structure. To conclude, the phenomenon of backshifting defies being simply as a syntactic operation.

This study was motivated by a question of why participle constructions described in English learning materials typified by TOEIC prep books are not reflected in the official tests given out by ETS. As well known, TOEIC is designed to measure an ability to use practical English for communication in everyday life, so it mostly consists of the sentences of a colloquial style. By contrast, participle constructions are used more in formal written English. In this study, descriptions of the constructions in the prep books were examined, followed by the analysis of their problems based on corpus findings. As a result of the analysis, it has been shown that the descriptions of the participle constructions have quite a few contents not worth learning, overloading students with unnecessary academic pressure. In this study, it has been concluded that the participle constructions should be described with a focus on the attendant circumstances, time and reason, and with much more focus on attendant circumstances since the usage is most often observed regardless of a style.

The result of this long term national project is UTM-01 (Urban Transit Maglev -01) in 1998 and UTM-02 in 2006 and the 6.1 ㎞ long double track maglev commercialization project in Inchon international airport from 2006 to 2012. In this paper the status of the maglev development in Korea is reported.

The result of this long term national project is UTM-01 ( Urban Transit Maglev -01 ) in 1998 and UTM-02 in 2006 and the 6.1 ㎞ long double track maglev commercialization project in Inchon international airport from 2006 to 2012. In this paper the status of the maglev development for the past 20 years is reported. Design changes in key technologies - maglev bogies, secondary suspension system, levitation system, propulsion system, major power suppling equipments from UTM-01 system to that of commercialization project - are described.

This study describes the SEMP(Systems Engineering Management Plan) being applied for the successful promotion of a national project of 'Urban Maglev Program'. SEMP means a kind of fundamental document for total integrated managements of the project and of the systems engineering activities. Since the tasks and responsibilities of all participants of the project, involving the tasks to collaborate between them, can be clearly defined and described in the SEMP, all participants can share and clarify their role and responsibility. The national project of 'Urban Maglev Program' are composed of three core projects; the first one for system integration, the second for the development of Maglev vehicle, and the third for a model line construction.

On last year's KSR conference, the general of systems engineering technology was introduced on the focus that the SEMP(Systems Engineering Management Plan) being applied for a national project of 'Urban Maglev Program'. Since this SEMP covers very wide work scopes of 'plan, application, control of the program', 'design, analysis, test & evaluation of the system', and 'special engineering activities', it is very important that the tasks and responsibilities of all participants of the project, involving the tasks to collaborate between them, are clearly defined and described. By the point, the updating of SEMP should be done continuously. In this paper, the updating points and typically the management plan of TPM (Technical Performance Measurement), which is more concretely defined, will be explained.

KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials) has been leading in developing low to medium speed urban transit maglev for the past 20 years. The results of this long term national project are UTM-01(Urban Transit Maglev-01) in 1998 and UTM-02 in 2006 and the 6.113km long double track maglev commercialization project in Incheon international airport from 2006 to 2012. The maglev commercialization project being underway is literally the commercialization project aiming at mass passenger transportation that the system reliability and safety should be very high necessitating the risk management. In this paper the risk management activity of the maglev commercialization project is reported.
