Melanterite(Green vitriol) is a kind of mineral crude drug which has been used for a hemostatic and hematic, and it contained iron, zinc, magnesium, copper, calcium and manganese etc., and the contents of those metals were 14.34%, 1.21%, 0.91% 0.41%, 0.37% and 0.15%, respectively. In the acute toxicity in mice its LD<sub>50</sub> was over 3,000 ㎎/㎏ and 2,000 ㎎/㎏ by the oral and subcutaneous administration, respectively, but the LD<sub>50</sub> by the intraperitoneal administration was 1,810 ㎎/㎏. On the experimental anemia induced by the free bleeding in rabbits and by the phenylhydrazine in rats the reduced RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit were rapidly recovered.

The anti-diabetic effects of the methanol extracts of Cortex, Ramulus and Folium part of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver were investigated by the experimental diabetic model in rats. The increased blood glucose level in the diabetic rats induced by alloxan and streptozotocin was significantly lowered and a marked increase in body weight was shown with the treatments of the extracts of Cortex and Folium. The blood insulin level lowered by streptozotocin pretreatment was significantly recovered with the treatment of the extract of Folium. In glucose tolerance test, the extracts of Cortex and Folium displayed a significant inhibitory effect on the glucose level. The extracts of Cortex and Folium also caused a marked inhibition in increased blood pressure in the diabetic rats induced by alloxan.

(목적) 두충나무(Eucommia ulmoides ‘Oliv.)는 강장, 강정, 진통약으로 한방에서 널리 응용되는 생약으로 간장과 신장을 보한다라고 되어 있고, 민간에서는 당뇨병에 좋다고 하여 차(tea)로서 복용되기도 한다. 그러나 이 두충나무의 당뇨병에 대한 영향은 아직 보고된 바 없고 또 그 유효성분도 명확히 구명되어있지 못하므로, 실험적 당뇨병 병태모델에 미치는 두충나무의 영향 및 그 활성부위를 구명하고자 유효성분연구에 선행하여 본 실험에 착수하였다. (방법) 두충나무의 피부(Cortex), 소지부(Ramulus) 및 엽부(Folium)의 각 부위의 메탄올 엑기스가 Alloxan및 Streptogotocin에 의한 당뇨병 병태모델에 미치는 체중 및 혈당량 변화를 경시적으로 측정하였고, 또 Streptosotocin에 의하여 낮아진 insulin level에 미치는 영향과 당부하시험에 있어서의 영향도 관찰하였다. (결과) Alloxan 및 Streptogotocin에 의해 유발된 당뇨병 흰쥐에 있어서 두충나무 Cortex 및 Folium의 메탄올액기스가 혈중 g1ucose함량의 유의성있는 상승억제효과를 나타내었고 또 체중의 감소를 억제함을 알 수 있었다. 또 두충나무의 Folium은 낮아진 혈중 insulin 함량의 유의성있는 회복효과를 보였다. 당부하시험에서 두충나무의 Cortex와 Folium은 유의한 혈당상승억제효과를 나타내었다. 따라서 두충나무 Cortex와 Folium의 부위에서 항당뇨활성이 있음을 알 수 있었다.

The pharmacological activities on water extracts of Cortex, Ramulus and Folium from the Eucommia ulmoides Oliver were studied, and the following results were observed. The vasodilative action on the rabbit ear blood vessel was recognized in the Cortex, Ramulus and Folium. The spontaneous motility and the contraction induced by Ach., BaCl₂ and histamine in the isolated ileum of mice were suppressed and inhibited in the Ramulus only. On the contrary, the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities were noted in the Cortex and Folium. Furthermore, the hypotensive effect was recognized in the Folium. The diuretic, bile secretory and anti-fatigue effects were shown in the Cortex and Folium.

In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effects of HOISU-SAN which has been widely used for general and cerevral paralysis, artbralgia etc.. We studied on the action of isolated ileum and heart, of blood pressure, the analgesic, sedative, anticonvulsive effect. The results of this study were summerized as follows; Spontaneous motility of the isolated ileum of mice and heart of frog was suppressed, and contraction of the ilem due to Acetylcholine, Barium chloride and Histamine was remarkably inhibited. Hypotensive action was noted. Analgesic, sedative action was noted by the ‘acetic acid method’, the rotor rod and wheel cage method, respectively. A prolongation of anesthetic time induced by thiopental-Na was shown. Suppressive action was shown on the convulsion caused by strychnine, picrotoxin and caffeine. According to the above results, effects based on the oriental medical references approximated to the actual experimental results.

An observational study was conducted to evaluate the adequacy of required elemets and the usefulness of drug package inserts as a drug information source. Out of 461 cardiovascular prescription drugs enlisted in the 1996 KSHP Drug Identification Database, 344 package inserts of 419 drugs were collected from 104 pharmaceutical companies from October 1st to 31st of 1997. The information of pack age inserts was divided into 4 categories and 21 subcategories which have been developed based on regulatory requirements, AHFS Drug Information, Micromedex® CCIS drug evaluation monographs and frequent drug information requests. The results revealed that the basic required information including generic names, brand names, active ingredients, dosages, precautions and manufacturers' information were well documented, being, consistent with regulatory requirements. However, the lack of documentation on pharmacological descriptions, clinical pharmacological information such as pharmacokinetic parameters, symptoms and managements of intoxication, and their corresponding references has been observed, suggesting that package inserts should be further improved to serve as reliable and easily accessible source of drug information for healthcare professionals.
