Purpose: This study was to identify the effect of cardiac rehabilitation education on self-care knowledge and self-care behavior in open heart surgery patients after hospital discharge. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The data were collected from August 1 to September 30, 2002 at an university hospital in Ulsan city. The subjects of the study consisted of forty open heart surgery patients after hospital discharge. Data were analyzed by x^(2)-test, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients. Result: 'The experimental group of the cardiac rehabilitation education will have a higher level of self-care knowledge than the control group'was supported. 'The experimental group of the cardiac rehabilitation education will have a higher level of self-care behavior performance than the control group' was supported. 'The higher the knowledge of self-care, the higher the self-care behavior performance degree' was supported. Conclusion: The patients who took the cardiac rehabilitation education showed the increase of the degree of knowledge of self-care and self-care behavior performance. So, The cardiac rehabilitation education was identified as the prerequisite nursing intervention to increase knowledge of self-care and self-care behavior performance for the open heart surgery patients after hospital discharge.
