An optical diagnostic using a laser spectroscopy was conducted for monitoring methanol concentration in DMFC. Monitoring gas concentration using laser spectroscopy is in-situ measurement and has rapid response time, hence it is possible to monitor gas concentration more accurately. Moreover, it is possible to set a simple experimental system consists of a few devices. Therefore, this method is worth researching as a tool of gas measurement. In this study, 3.392 urn He-Ne laser was used for measuring the concentration of methanol in DMFC. Based on Beer-Lambert equation, we measured the transient change of methanol concentration for stabilizing OCV of DMFC, and also figured out the long-term activation (70 minutes) under DMFC operation. The consumption of methanol had relations with DMFC power. As the power increased, the consumption of methanol increased as well.
