To study the effect of body weight on conception, 9 years of records on 306 yearling heifers were used. Data were collected from the Kansas state University Polled Hereford herd at Manhattan, Kansas from March 1972 to August 1980. Yearling heifers were divided by the conception status and data from pregnant heifers were divided by the conception date (May 20 through June 9, June 10 through June 30 and July 1 through July 21). Body weight were measured each month from January through June and November and body condition scores were takes by weight-height ratio in May and November. The average body weight and age of heifers at first conception were 289.2±36.6 Kg and 449.6±21.5 days, respectively and the correlation coefficient between them was r=0.449. Heifers that conceived weighed more in November aced January Than heifers that did not conceive, although body weight from February to June, body weight changes from November to May and body condition scores in May and November were not different. The average April weight affected conception date, thus heifers that conceived early were heavier. Body condition and body weight change shortly before the start of breeding season were more important than those of the previous fall for their conception.

The effects of calving date, cow age and suckling on the interval from calving to conception in 450 polled Hereford cows ranging in age from 2 to 13 years were examined. Nine hundred eighty-six records from them were collected from the Beef Research Unit in Manhattan, Kansas from March 1972 to August 1980. They were divided into 3 groups by calving date and each group was further divided into 3 subgroups by conception date. The cows calved earlier in calving season tended to have longer interval from calving to conception (P$lt;0.001) than the cows calved later and 2 year old cows had shorter (P$lt;0.01) interval from calving to conception than 3 or more than 3 year old cows. Suckling increased that interval, especially in cows which calved from April 12 to April 30 (P$lt;0.02).

To see the effects of body condition and calf weaning weight on the calving and conception date of dam, 776 records from 380 polled Hereford cows were used. Data were collected from March 1972 to August 1980 from the Beef Research Unit in Manhattan, Kansas. :hey were divided into 3 groups by the calving date and each group was further divided into 3 subgroups by the conception date. The cows which calved earlier in the calving season were heavier (P $lt; 0.01) and had better body condition (P $lt; 0.01) in the previous fall than those calved later, but such trends were not significant in May. The cows which conceived earlier in the breeding season was significantly heavier and had significantly better body condition in the previous fall and in May than those conceived later. And the adjusted 205-day weight ratio of calves in the cows which caved earlier in the calving season was smaller (P $lt; 0.01) than those calved later. However, that ratio was not affected by the conception date and that ratio of the previous year was affected neither by calving date nor by conception date.

For the bovine in vitro fertilization, oocytes are collected from the follicles or oviduct right after ovulation and incubated in the culture medium for 1 - 28 hours at 37° - 39℃ before being fertilized. Sperm cells are collected by artificial vagina after ejaculation or from the epididymis and washed in the culture medium by centrifugation and incubated for 1 - 6 hours before being inseminated under the similar conditions of oocyte incubation. After the 18 - 48 hours co-culture of sperm cells with oocytes, fertilized eggs are evaluated (and transfered to recipeints, if it is necessary).

BACKGROUND: Acorus gramineus is of medicinal plants that exhibit variable biological activities for human health and against insect pests. The extracts of A. gramineus was examined in an attempt to develop a natural repellent against human disease-mediating Culex pipiens. METHODS AND RESULTS: The roots of A. gramineus dried under dark conditions were homogenized and extracted with ethanol. The extracts were subjected to repellent activity assays against C. pipiens in a hand-made acrylamide box with three accessible rooms. Significantly low number of mosquitos was found in the room previously fumigated with the extracts at 50mg/L on the filter paper, exhibiting less than 20% of mosquitos tested. More than 50% of mosquitos tested was found in the room without the extracts, but less than 30% was found in the room that released mosquitos. GC/MS analysis detected β-asarone as a main component of the extracts. The commercial asarones (α and β) showed a repellent activity at 50mg/L on the filter paper similar to the extracts. CONCLUSION(S): A. gramineus has potential for use as a mosquito repellent since β-asarone, a main component of the plant, exhibited a strong repellent activity against C. pipiens.
