Vol.19 No.1

In order to facilitate the creation, exchange, and diffusion of knowledge in the exhibition & convention, it is important to create an environment, so-called ‘Ba’ in which knowledge, namely tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge can be continuously and dynamically created and exchanged. This study paid attention to three phases, pre-show, at-show, and post-show in the exhibition & convention service to investigate how such a 'Ba' or environment is constructed and constituted. In the exhibition & convention, 'Ba' of the physical space, where the face-to-face meeting takes place, is crucial, and it is in this main space where people can share, see, experience, even play with the latest information and goods. It is also very crucial to construct an auxiliary space that mediates the so-called 'socialization' process of knowledge conversions such as agora, cafe, and business lounge. Recently, high technology such as IT has been actively adopted and applied to exhibition & conventions, and 'Ba' of virtual space is emerging as a new platform of information and knowledge exchange. As 'Ba' of virtual space is activated, the creation and exchanges of knowledge in 'Ba' of physical space of exhibition & convention are further strengthened, and this plays a role of transforming and strengthening the nature of exhibition & convention service which is to share and spread knowledge as a knowledge market.

Vol.95 No.-

This study aims to define convention and exhibition as a knowledge platform that facilitates not only in sharing information and knowledge, but also in expanding networks between participants such as knowledge providers and knowledge seekers based on a platform theory. This study cited Parker et al.(2016)’s platform terms such as participant, value unit, filter for platform components and pull, facilitate, match for core interactions on the platform to prove convention and exhibition as a platform. These core interactions on convention and exhibition platform have been changed due to ICT application. Traditional convention and exhibition can be said as 'physical platform' for a place of knowledge creation through a face-to-face interactions, but convention and exhibition that combines ICT builds a 'virtual platform' that can effectively link information pursued by participants based on mobile and web. The virtual convention and exhibition platform makes knowledge providers and seekers get much more information before participating in convention and exhibition and gives them strongly motivation to participate in physical platform of convention and exhibition. This strengthens the role of physical convention and exhibition as a knowledge platform. Therefore, in order to become a competitive convention and exhibition in the future, it will be important to create an environment for knowledge platforms with ICT integration.

Vol.23 No.6

This research explores the role of exhibitions as platforms for knowledge sharing and acquisition in a knowledge-based society where knowledge holds a competitive advantage. It investigates the motives of exhibition visitors from a knowledge-oriented perspective, categorizing their reasons for participating in face-to-face interactive exhibition spaces as primarily driven by tacit knowledge acquisition, classified into ‘tacit knowledge of information and knowledge,’ ‘experience and participation,’ and ‘networking.’ A survey was conducted with ‘G-Star’ game show attendees(n=244) in Busan, and principal component analysis was employed to validate the three underlying factors of tacit knowledge. Additionally, differences in the pursuit of tacit knowledge were examined based on the characteristics of G-Star exhibition visitors(B2B, B2C). This study contributes to a better understanding of the significance of exhibitions in a knowledge-based society and offers essential insights into the goals and interests of exhibition participants.

Vol.87 No.-

This study applied the concept of cluster to identify the role of convention & exhibition as a platform of knowledge sharing and creation. The concept of clusters that firms have a competitive advantage through geographical proximity and interactions explains the reason for the existence of convention & exhibition. In other words, it is expected that the conventions & exhibitions, which share specific time and space, share professional information and knowledge in related fields to create new business. Based on this study, the following suggestions can be suggested from a practical point of view. First, as the convention & exhibition is expected to be scaled up as a knowledge platform and the convention & exhibitions in vertical and horizontal related fields will be held jointly or in an integrated manner. Therefore convention & exhibition organizers will need a differentiation strategy. Second, in order to become a competitive convention & exhibition in this trend, it should be an optimal environment for gathering and spreading the latest information and knowledge in related fields. In this environment, it is expected that the integration of ICT technology will become a key element of successful convention & exhibition.

Vol.14 No.3

For the last decade, convention industry in Busan has been rapidly growing in the number andsize of conventions and events the city has hosted. It is still not answered, however, whether itsthis noticeable performance has been reinforcing the growth of local convention industry. Sincemany big-size (or mega) events in Busan have been organized mostly by Seoul-basedPCOs(Professional Convention Organizers), it is argued that the effect of convention andexhibitions on local economy is very limited. To answer this inquiry, we focus on the supplychain of a convention, or what sequential activities a PCO performs to complete its service. Wedo LQ (Location Quotient) analyses on convention-related industries to see how specialized Busanis in them. In many convention-related industries Busan's LQs are not greater than 1, indicatingthat convention service providers or supply-side infrastructures are not well developed in Busan asin Seoul-capital area. In LQ of college students who major in convention and exhibition studies,Busan shows the second highest LQ (=2.87), indicating that Busan has big stock of potentialconvention specialists. Overall LQ analyses show that the city is experiencing a low degree ofspecialization in the industry while a high degree in specialized labor provision, which reveals aserious mismatch between supply and demand in convention manpower. It manifests itself thatBusan needs an active industrial policy to support local convention-related industries.

Vol.14 No.3

There is growing evidence that the location of international organizations positively influence the convention industry development in the region. The purpose of this study is to suggest strategies to make ‘Kijang Forum’ an international body through which world nuclear power plant cities are able to exchange ideas and policies in order to secure safety and prosperity of the cities. In this study we use two cases of WTA and NEAR as successful international organizations initiated by local governments in Korea, and figure out what are the success factors of such organizations. We argue that they would consist of 1) the participation of minimum key members (preferably more then three members) 2) the architecture of the organization chart and 3) the existence of the effective secretariat. In particular, during the set-up stage, the role of the secretariat is emphasized to set up the organization, to network and mediate among its members. We apply such findings to Kijang Forum to make it another success of a municipal-level international organization, which will host a number of related conventions and meetings in Busan.

Vol.16 No.4

This study re-conceptualizes the convention and exhibition as a knowledge market to better understand how ICT technology and market globalization change the way the convention and exhibition is provided. To explain the creation, conversion and expansion of knowledge, four types of knowledge transformation process (socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization) were studied. As “knowledge exchange market”, convention and exhibition events are often viewed as “socialization” process in which people meet face-to-face and share “tacit” knowledge in the event venue which becomes a “temporary cluster.” This is the traditional mode of convention and exhibition. Nowadays, however, new ICT technology such as internet, teleconference, VR, IoT etc. is increasingly employed to produce new modes of convention and exhibition. For instance, on-line conference or cyber art exhibitions are examples of the “combination” of explicit knowledge to create value. The new understanding of convention and exhibition from knowledge theory will enable us to see more confidently how this business will unfold in the future.

Vol.98 No.-

This study aims to shed new light on the activities of PEOs(Professional Exhibition Organizers) that plan and operate exhibitions from the perspective of knowledge management(KM). The activities of PEOs are defined as the process of KM, and as a framework of analysis, they are recognized as the main steps of knowledge management: ‘knowledge acquisition’, ‘knowledge creation’, ‘knowledge transfer’, ‘knowledge storage’, ‘knowledge application’ were used. Exhibition is a knowledge platform where experts gather together to share knowledge, and PEOs that plan and organize these platforms play an important role in building an environment where information and knowledge are easily shared and spread. PEOs grasp the purpose of the exhibition participants and visitors, and creates various knowledge activities so that the purpose of participation can be achieved. PEOs select appropriate venues for the people concerned to attend, plan programs, operate events to effectively share and spread necessary information and knowledge, and create various knowledge activities such as information management and network management after the event. This study is meaningful in that it confirms the status of PEOs as facilitators of knowledge creation.
