Objectives We attempted to investigate the trends of Korean Medical treatments for neck pain caused by whiplash injury by analyzing domestic clinical studies. Methods We searched for studies listed on Korean electronic databases (KTKP, OASIS, RISS, KMbase, NDSL, KCI, and National Assembly Library). Clinical studies were chosen according to the inclusion criteria. Subsequently, we compared and analyzed the data. Results The search yielded 35 studies, of which there were 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), 15 non-randomized controlled trials (NRCTs), 6 case reports, and 2 before-after studies. Among these, 54.7% of participants were in the acute stage of the damage period. Pharmacopuncture was used the most in main treatment methods. Only 14.3% of studies mentioned approval by an institutional review board (IRB) and only 8.6% of studies considered side effects. Conclusions There is some evidence that Korean Medical treatment is effective for neck pain caused by whiplash injury. Since all studies, however, were exposed to the risk of bias. Therefore, future studies of a higher quality are required.

Antidiabetic activity of Mori folium ethanol soluble fraction (MFESF) was examined in db/db mice, which is a spontaneously hyperglycemic, hyperinsulinemic and obese animal model. 500 and 1000mg/kg dose for MFFSF (designated by SY 500 and SY 1000, respectively) and 5mg/kg dose for acarbose were administered for 6 weeks. Body weight gain, fasting and non-fasting serum glucose, glycated hemoglobin and triglyceride were all reduced dose dependently when compared between db/db control group and MFESF treated group. At 11th and 13th week after birth, MFESF increased an insulin secretion which may result in lowering serum glucose level. Total activities of sucrase and maltase in SY 500 treated group were decreased when compared to db/db control. On the other hand, those in SY 1000 and acarbose treated groups were increased. This result may suggest that proteins for sucrase and maltase were compensatorily induced due to significant inhibition of glycosidase-catalyzed reaction at doses administered in this study.

Modern medical oncology has introduced various anti-cancer drugs since the World War I and II. Unlike for the solid tumors, hematological malignancies had been documented some limitations for curing it with chemotherapeutic agents only. In 1960, Dr. Nowell and Dr. Hungerford had discovered elongated chromosome (Philadelphia chromosome) which has documented as a product of translocation between 9th and 22nd chromosome in the patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. In 1970s, immunochemistry technique using monoclonal antibody has spread world widely and from 1990s, flow cytometry method has been available. In appreciation of these evolutions in basic science, the treatment strategy ofhematological malignancies have changed from the chemotherapeutic agents to targeted agents. Among the targeted agents, some drugs are newly developed and others are recreated as anti-cancer drugs after long-time of discard because of their toxicities or teratogenic effects. Nowadays, we are in the middle of flood of targeted agents, for example, tyrosinekinase inhibitors, epidermal growth factor receptor blockers, farnesyl transferase inhibitors, histone deacetylase inhibitors, and etc. In 21st century, the optimal treatment of hematological malignancies should follow a tailor-made strategy according to the patient and disease itself. In the present article, some representative agents will be introduced in accordance with target diseases. (Korean J Med 78:540-551, 2010)
