This study aims to reveal the design intention of G. Terragni for Danteum project related to the ‘De Monarchia" written by Dante. Terragni was a leading rationalist architect during the period of fascist regime under Mussolini. In spite of not being built, Danteum has been regarded as Terragni’s representative work by its design quality and prominent interpretation of theme. So far, the majority of the precedent researches concerning Danteum has focalized on the aspects of architectural composition based on the allegories of ‘Divine Comedy’. Thus Danteum has been recognized as a perfect example of materialization of the Divine Comedy through allegories in terms of architecture design, meanwhile the contextual elements as the site condition and sociopolitical atmosphere have been respectively disregarded. But the project for the very heart of ancient Roman Empire had to be carried on under fascist government which needed a strong political dogma for leadership of the regime. This research follows several hypothesis to figure out Terragni’s ideas on urban context and political situations. The remaining copy of design report written by Terragni, Relazione sul Danteum, is the primary and direct font of this research but for the loss of the last part and bad state of conservation, it has only limited value. The documents of the first design competitions for the Palazzo Littorio in Rome (1934) might provide important suggestions for its identical site location as that of Danteum project. In conclusion, G. Terragni respected the pre-existing testimonies of the past around the site as well as the present and future meaning and value of the project. His invention of the ‘Empire’ proposed in Danteum next to the ‘Paradise’ is his personal interpretation of ‘The 3rd Rome’ promoted by fascist regime. So Danteum is to be examined not only related to the ‘Divine Comedy’ for traditional christianism but to the ‘De Monarchia’ for new political ambition toward universal empire pursued by regime at that time.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the evolution process of spatial formation between the Piazza del Popolo in Rome and its circumstances. In order to facilitate the research, 4 situations of different periods and urban contexts around the Piazza del Popolo were reconstructed and compared, in base of various documentations including iconography, cartography, bibliography and photography. In conclusion, the spatial transformation of the Piazza del Popolo is the result of complex elements and situations but the relationship between the obelisk of the piazza with trident streets and the coordination between the inner space of the piazza and the Pincio Hill are the most decisive two factors for defining character and image of the piazza today. The piazza itself was not completed at once but formulated over centuries and in urban scale, it has the meaning of important node point related to the trivium streets and the Via Flaminia, at the same time to the Vatican area across the river Tevere through the Margherita bridge and Via Cola di Rienzo.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the evolution process of spatial formation between the Piazza di Spagna in Rome and its circumstances. In order to facilitate the research, 4 situations of different periods and urban contexts around the Piazza di Spagna were reconstructed and compared, in base of various documentations including iconography, cartography, bibliography, photography. In conclusion, the spatial transformation of the Piazza di Spagna is the result of complex situations but the open grand stair called Spanish Steps, designed by the architect Francesco de Sanctis in collaboration with Alessandro Specchi in early 18th Century was the most decisive factor for defining character and function of the piazza today. The piazza itself was not completed at once but formulated over centuries and in urban scale, has the meaning of important node point related to the Strada Felice of the Pope Sixtus V, at the same time to the river Tevere through the Via Condotti. Its spatial form, physically divided in two different triangles, is the key to contain two different characters, that of commercial and that of religious, in the same square.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the evolution process of urban space between the Piazza Castello and its surroundings in Turin, Italy. In order to facilitate the research, 5 situations of different periods and urban contexts in the historic part of the city are reconstructed and compared, in base of various documentations including iconography, cartography, bibliography and photography. In conclusion, the physical transformation of the historic part of Turin is the result of chain reactions between complex elements and political situations but the original structure of roman castrum and the Piazza Castello are the most decisive two factors for defining character and image of the city today. When the Piazza Castello served as entrance yard of old city gate it was the edge of a small town but through the expansions of urban space, it became the civic core, gaining relative importance. The piazza itself was not completed at once but formulated over centuries generating several convergent urban axis, and in urban scale, it has the meaning of important node point related to the cartesian urban fabric of the original roman castrum and diagonal streets as Via Po, networking major squares around.

The relaxation and elimination characteristics of polarization-photoinduced dichroism have been investigated in amorphous chalcogenide thin films deposited having normal(0。) and obique (80。) vapor incident angles. The dark relaxation kinetics of dichroism from a saturation point(D\ulcorner\ulcorner) to a certain relaxation point(D\ulcorner\ulcorner) grew to be longer on subsequent cycles of switching on and off of the inducing light, and these decays are changed from simple exponential decay to stretched exponential decay. The dichroism induced by a long time(~3.3 hrs) exposure exhibited the characteristics of longer time maintenance and smaller decreasing rate, in contrast with that by a short time (~min) exposure. In addition, the dichroism was eliminated by the exposure of non-polarized He-Ne laser.
