A total of 8,748 persons, 3,250 male and 5,489 female, aged 5 to 70 years, were screened for hypertension at Kyung Hee University Hospital Outpatient Departments over a period of 5 months between June 30 and November 30, 1980. The prevalence of hypertension (SBP?? 160 or DBP ?? 95 plus those with BP< 160/95 on treatment) at the First Screen was 24.0% for male, 13.2% for female and 17.2% for all participants. The prevalence of hypertension increased with increasing age and body weight in both sexes. Fiftyfour percent of all hypertensives were not aware of hypertension, 31% were aware but not on therapy, and 10% were on treatment but still hypertensive. Only 5% of all hypertensives had their BP controlled with appropriate treatment. Patient participation in the Second and Third Screen was 28% and 31% respectively. Of those who were referred to physicians, 41% underwent the initial evaluation and treatment. It is clear from this study that a massive effort is needed in Korea to detect and treat those with hypertension. Screening efforts should be a accompanied by measures to improve patient participation and adherence to the treatment protocol. On-going public and professional education on hypertension together with community-based hypertension screening may ultimately improve hypertension control in Korea.
