2023 Journal of Nutrition and Health Vol.56 No.5

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to analyze the priorities for educational content regarding precautions to be taken to prevent safety accidents for employees in school foodservice using the Borich priority formula and the Locus for Focus model. Methods: A survey was conducted in February 2019 on 194 employees in elementary school and 122 employees in middle- and high school foodservice in the Jeonbuk area. Demographic characteristics, status of safety accidents, safety education, and their importance and performance levels were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. The priorities for the educational content on precautions to prevent safety accidents were based on a 3-step analysis method, including the paired sample t-test, Borich priority formula, and the Locus for Focus Model. Results: The average perceived importance of the precautions to be taken against safety accidents of employees in elementary-, middle-, and high schools was higher compared to the average performance of the employees (p < 0.001). The top priority for elementary school employees was caution against falls during the cleaning of the gas hood and the trench in the kitchen. In addition, ‘awareness of chemical signs’ was added as one of the top priorities of middle- and high school employees. The second highest priority items were ‘do stretching’, ‘safely adjusting workbench height’, ‘keeping the right attitude’, ‘using assistive devices when moving heavy things’, and ‘checking the material safety data sheet’, which were the same for all elementary, middle- and high school employees. Conclusion: Thus, to improve the educational preparedness of employees in the area of safety precautions, eight safety/accident prevention items should be included in the safety education program.

Vol.32 No.-

The fever of the Korean Wave in 2004 was a social phenomenon in the Japanese national media. However, daily airings of Korean TV dramas and appearance of idol groups on TV, Kimchi fried rice on an elementary school lunch menu or the popularity of weekend trip to Korea to young women and so on are no longer surprising news. Also, it is not difficult to meet teenagers who frankly talked about their Korean ethnic origins. Students enrolled in classes about Korean society, culture or history often reveal that their interest in the country was piqued by their enjoyment of Korean dramas, films, or K-pop, or their mothers are great fans of Korea dramas. Many are quick to add that their Japanese idols or famous film stars are also ethnically Korean. Only a few years ago, Japanese popular culture icons of Korean descent often hid their ethnic origins. For instance, Rikkidozan, a legendary pro- wrestler in post-war Japan, never admitted his ethnicity and his Korean roots were only revealed posthumously. Similarly, Chang Hoon, a famous baseball player, tried to hide his Korean ethnic origin in public. In those days, using a Korean name was a symbol of resistance against racial discrimination. However, nowadays, a resident Korean's ‘coming out’ is hardly shocking. On the contrary, the media's changing attitude seems to make many ordinary resident Koreans feel more comfortable in using their Korean names and disclosing their national identities. In this way, the popularity of the Korean Wave proves the power of popular culture to change and challenge racial discrimination in multicultural Japan. This study will discuss these changing perceptions of Koreans in Japan. It will examine the Korean Wave and the transnational cultural flows between Japan and Korea and focus on the changing attitudes of Japanese and Koreans toward resident Koreans and their national identity.

Vol.- No.131

This study examined the Japanese media discourse on Squid Game. The Squid Game caricatures the powered who seeks to maintain capitalist class order and enjoy the violence of prejudice, discrimination and hate toward the socially underprivileged. It portrays poetic justice as moral basis of a death game in which participants resist the power for survival with a sense of familial solidarity and empathy. The discussion was mainly centered on the criticism of the generic hybridization of the drama between the universality of global inequality problems and issues of regionality, as well the typical themes of Korean social dramas. These themes include extreme class gaps and family disintegration in the form of social survival game genre, informed by audience-oriented criticism. To note, the Japanese media’s criticism of Korean dramas in the age of streaming platforms has changed significantly and they cannot be compared to those of the 2000s’. In the 2000s, the first drama Hallyu was often referred to as a social phenomenon leading to anti-Korean sentiments prevailing in the Korean drama media’s criticism. Such criticism was unable to stop the spread of the subsequent Korean waves in later years, such as K-pop, food, fashion, and everyday culture in the 2010s. There was a general tendency to victimize the middle-aged Korean drama fans from a male chauvinistic point of view. It also witnessed the birth of the hallyu satirical romantic comedy genre which parodied the mainstream media mocking the Korean drama fandom of female viewers. In 2020, the popularity of Crash Landing on You, a representative work of the hallyu satirical romantic comedy genre, led to the peak of the fourth hallyu wave in Japan. The present study argues that the new trend in the Japanese media’s criticism of Korean drama highlights transboundary empathy for the social underprivileged from a perspective of audience-oriented criticism. It was also posited that such trend can help heal the expansion of xenophobia and hatred which has been exacerbated by COVID 19. Furthermore, it can raise issues informed by the new and more critical perspectives in current media commentaries, opposing the nationalistic populism which tend to treat drama as a mere reflection of backwardness and marginality of other culture. .

Vol.48 No.6

Atrial myocytes have two functionally separate groups of ryanodine receptors (RyRs): those at the periphery colocalized with L-type $Ca^{2+}$channels (DHPRS) and those a t the cell interior not associated with DHPRs. $Ca^{2+}$ current ($I_{ca}$) directly gates peripheral RyRs on action potential and the subsequent peripheral $Ca^{2+}$ release propagates into the center of atrial myocytes. The mechanisms that regulate the $Ca^{2+}$+ propagation wave remain Poorly understood. Using 2-D confocal$Ca^{2+}$ imaging, we examined the role of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP $_3R$) and mitochondria on ($I_{ca}$)- gated local $Ca^{2+}$ signaling in rat atrial myocytes. Blockade of IP $_3R$ by xestospongin C (XeC) partially suppressed the magnitudes of I ca-gated central and peripheral $Ca^{2+}$ releases with no effect on $I_{ca}$. Mitochondrial staining revealed that mitochondria were aligned with ${\thickapprox}2-{\mu}m$ separations in the entire cytoplasm of ventricular and atrial myocytes. Membrane depolarization induced rapid mitochondrial $Ca^{2+}$ rise and decay in the cell periphery with slower rise in the center, suggesting that mitochondria may immediately uptake cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$, released from the peripheral SR on depolarization, and re-release the $Ca^{2+}$ into the cytosol to activate neighboring central RyRs. Our data suggest that the activation of IP $_3R$ and mitochondrial $Ca^{2+}$ handing on action potential may serve as a cofactor for the $Ca^{2+}$ propagation from the DHPR-coupled RyRs to the DHPR-uncoupled RyRs with large gaps between them.

Vol.26 No.2

This study explores the changing images of North Korea reconstructed by the British media, in order to evaluate the impacts of the 2001 diplomatic normalization between Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) and the European Union from a cultural perspective. Since the United Kingdom normalized its diplomatic relationship with DPRK in 2000, the British mass media has often focused on North Korean society and people’s lives from their own point of view. Between the media or programs, the media practitioners tend to show the different perceptions and political views on North Korea as a rogue state. On the other hand, despite the differences between them, the media discourses seek to depict North Korea from their own perspective instead of adopting those of the United States. At the same time, they appear to highlight the self-centred identity politics of the United States in labelling North Korea as a rogue state is still based on the Cold War ideology. In British eye, North Korea is an invention of the United States which needs a new ‘Otherness’ in the post-Cold War politics. Also, Kim Jong Il is evil but North Korea is not so powerful to threaten the security of United States or Europe. More importantly North Koreans urgently need the international humanitarian support as a condition of the normalization of diplomatic ties between EU and DPRK.
