Genetic hemoglobin disorders are caused by mutations and/or deletions in the -globin or -globin genes. Thalassemia is caused by quantitative defects and hemoglobinopathies by structural defect of hemoglobin. The incidence of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathy is increased in Korea with rapid influx of people from endemic areas. Thus, the awareness of the disease is needed. -thalassemias are caused by deletions in -globin gene, while -thalassemias are associated with decreased synthesis of -globin due to -globin gene mutations. Hemoglobinopathies involve structural defects in hemoglobin due to altered amino acid sequence in the - or -globin chains. When the patient is suspected with thalassemia/hemoglobinopathy from abnormal complete blood count findings and/or family history, the next step is detecting hemoglobin abnormality using electrophoresis methods including high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The development of novel molecular genetic technologies, such as massively parallel se-quencing, facilitates a more precise molecular diagnosis of thalassemia/hemoglobin-opathy. Moreover, prenatal diagnosis using genetic testing enables the prevention of tha-lassemia birth and pregnancy complications. We aimed to review the spectrum and classi-fication of thalassemia/hemoglobinopathy diseases and the diagnostic strategies includ-ing screening tests, molecular genetic tests, and prenatal diagnosis.

Activity of Lactobacillus crispatus isolated from vaginal microbiota against Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Tuberculosis, an infectious disease, is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It remains a significant public health issue around the globe, causing about 1.8 million deaths every year. Drug-resistant M. tuberculosis, including multi-drug-resistant (MDR), extremely-drug-resistant (XDR), and totally drugresistant (TDR) M. tuberculosis, continues to be a threat to public health. In the case of antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis, the treatment effect of conventional antibiotics is low. Side effects caused by high doses over a long period are causing severe problems. To overcome these problems, there is an urgent need to develop a new anti-tuberculosis drug that is different from the existing compound-based antibiotics. Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms conferring health benefits. They can be potential therapeutic agents in this context as the effectiveness of probiotics against different infectious diseases has been well established. Here, we report that Lactobacillus crispatus PMC201 shows a promising effect on tuberculosis isolated from vaginal fluids of healthy Korean women. Lactobacillus crispatus PMC201 reduced M. tuberculosis H37Rv under co-culture conditions in broth and reduced M. tuberculosis H37Rv and XDR M. tuberculosis in macrophages. Lactobacillus crispatus PMC201 was not toxic to a guinea pig model and did not induce dysbiosis in a human intestinal microbial ecosystem simulator. Taken together, these results indicate that L. crispatus PMC201 can be a promising alternative drug candidate in the current tuberculosis drug regime. Further study is warranted to assess the in vivo efficacy and confirm the mode of action of L. crispatus PMC201.

『소학언해』의 한 필사본에 대하여 -궁유한사(窮儒寒士)의 『소학』 학습과 그 언어 사용 양상-

이 논문은 『소학언해』의 특별한 한 필사본을 소개하고 그 자료적 가치를 조명해 보고자 한 논의이다. 이 책은 한문 원문을 각 구절의 끝 글자만 취하여 이어지는 구결과 함께 제시하는 방법으로 축약하고 언해문은 온전히 제시하는 체제로 되어 있어, 17세기 개인 출판의 이른바 “궁유한사본” 사서언해와 완전히 동일한 모습을 보인다. 따라서 이 책은 비록 필사본이지만 아직 알려지지 않은 『소학언해』의 궁유한사본이라 할 만한 것으로서 그 자체로 자료적 가치가 크다. 이 책의 또 다른 가치는 권말에 이 필사본의 저본으로 여겨지는 간본에 대한 간기가 적혀 있고 이어서 필사기가 붙어 있는 것인데, 이 간기는 지금까지 알려지지 않은 『소학언해』의 또 다른 지방 번각본의 존재를 알려준다. 한편 이 책은 필사본으로는 드물게 필사 연대와 필사자에 대한 명확한 기록이 있어 당시의 언어 사실을 확인할 수 있는 국어학적 자료로도 활용할 수 있다. 나아가 이 책은 그 필사자인 “궁유한사”가 실제 이 책을 가지고 학습한 흔적을 생생하게 담고 있다는 점에서 보다 특별한 가치를 지닌다. It is focused on introducing a special manuscript version and illuminating value of this text < Sohak-eonhae > in this paper. It makes us find the special style omitting the original text but being left on translating wholly in Korean. It is the same style to “Gungyuhansabon” Saseo-eonhae to be published by someone for sale as Xerographic version in 17th century. For this reason, it is a very interesting manuscript version of “Gungyuhansabon” Sohakeonhae that we have ever not found, on aspect of a form of translation style that is different to some of published < Sohakeonhae > before. Another value in this book tells us the existence of reprint copy of previously unknown < Sohak-eonhae > in other areas through the imprint of the end of this book. Moreover, this book is useful for researchers who want to examine real language at that time as Korean linguistic resources because there was an obvious record about the year of manuscript version and transcriber. Finally, this book has an exceptional value because of the real trace that “Gunguhansa”, who was a transcriber, studied this book.

율곡의 수양론에서 성의(誠意)의 도덕 실천적 특성

본 논문은 율곡(栗谷) 이이(李珥)의 수양론에서 성의(誠意)의 도덕 실천적 특성을 해명하는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 율곡은 성인(聖人)이 되기 위한 학문을 하면서 인격 형성을 위한 성의의 수양론을 강조했다. 성의의 수양은 주자(朱子)의 『대학장구(大學章句)』에서 격물치지(格物致知)가 강조된 이후 다소 그 의미가 약화된 측면이 있다. 율곡은 성(誠)을 매우 중시하는 입장을 견지했으므로 그가 주장하는 성의의 논지가 윤리적 맥락에서 어떻게 전개되고 있는지를 탐구하는 것은 의미있는 연구가 될 것이다. 본 논문에서 접근하는 성의론 탐구의 초점은, 성인·군자가 되는 인격 수양, 호선(好善)·행선(行善), 격물치지(格物致知), 성실(誠實)·실심(實心)이다. 고찰한 바에 따르면, 율곡은 이론적으로는 주자의 격물치지에 관한 입론에 대체로 동의하지만, 수양의 실천적인 측면에서는 오히려 성의를 더 중시하는 관점을 드러낸다. 또한 율곡은 격물치지의 실천적 가치 방향을 명확하게 각성시키는 선도적(先導的)인 의미를 성의에 부여하고 있다. 그리고 율곡은 도덕적 가치와 도리에 대한 지적(知的)인 앎이 실제적인 삶의 도덕적 문제 상황에서 온전하게 실천으로 이어지지 않는 문제점에 주목하여, 실심이 바로 궁리를 통해서 갖춘 도덕적 앎을 실제적인 도덕적 상황에서 성의를 할 수 있게 하는 참된 마음이며 가치 실천적인 동력을 가진 마음이라고 주장한다. In this thesis, we study the moral practical characteristics of sincere intention in the Yulgok’s thoughts. Yukgok was aimed to become the confucian saint, so he made researches on the self cultivation with great precision. Especially Yulgok stressed the sincere intention which occupies a essential position in the confucian discipline theory. Therefore we tried to analyze the moral practical meaning of sincere intention of Yulgok’s thoughts. As a result of study, we have drawn the following results ; The first, Yulgok emphasized the importance of sincere intention more than Chuxi[朱熹] did. This conclusion reflects the characteristic of practical moral thinking. The second, the position of sincere intention in the Yulgok’s discipline theory shows to enlighten the practical meaning of investigation of principle. The third, the sincere mind is the fundamental driving force to inspire the strong motivation for the sincere intention. We hope this study will stimulate further discussion on self cultivation theory. And through a follow-up study, I will reveal the more practical and moral meanings of sincere intention, then I also will try to find ways to use the results of this study in moral education.
