This study contemplates on the writing techniques found in Hyeon Deok's stories for children. Though his works had received much belated critical acclaim for political reasons that he had defected from South Korea, some distinct characteristics and their function in them has been analyzed by many critics since the 90's. Short, simple sentences, repetition of onomatopoeic or mimetic words, reappearance of same characters, narrative structures found in folk tales, and the contrast between good and evil amongst them are the essential features researchers have most often pointed out in Hyeon Deok's stories. These are the unique aesthetics of Hyeon Deok’s stories that appear throughout every work of his. That is, the narratives of his short stories are woven almost in the same way. Why did he use the same narrative techniques repetitively? What aesthetic accomplishment did he attain from such repetition? With these simple but fundamental questions in mind, this study aims to explore the stylistics of Hyeon Deok’s children’s stories. A literary work is woven with various layers from the microscopic level of phoneme to the macroscopic level of narrative structure. Therefore, instead of the level of analysis just identifying literary elements in a work, more in-depth, stylistical contemplation that extends to the primary narrative techniques used throughout the work. What this study focuses on most among the narrative techniques of Hyeon Deok is the technique of repetition and variation. Hyeon Deok not only used language just as a means of communication but also paid attention to the musicality of language. He was a consummate writer who focused on the intrinsic characteristics of language as a medium exhibited through various layers from sound on the level of phoneme to musicality created from repetitive description and metaphor. In Hyeon Deok’s stories, the repetition and variation of particular sounds or words are basically constructed with the units of phoneme, syllable, word, sentence, paragraph and chapter. And they extends to using analogy and making conflict/confrontation between the characters through the process of "becoming-". Hyeon Deok made the same particular characters to repeat and play variations of their conflict in similar ways throughout all of his individual stories, but at the same time to end up with different conclusions, making the collected works of his an open-ended story. In other words, the order of the individual stories that each reader chooses to read can decide the ultimate ending of the whole story. In this way, the repetition and variation extend from the phoneme level to the conflict between characters and the narrative structure, creating the unique musicality and playfulness of Hyeon Deok's children's stories. By focusing on Hyeon Deok's narrative techniques of repetition and variation in this respect, this study tries to reveal how exquisitely the writer played the Korean language like an musical instrument.
