Force needed to perform cycling is produced mostly by quadriceps muscles. However, previous studies have shown that the use of hamstring muscles increases the cycling performance. Cleat pedals facilitate the use hamstring muscles during cycling, however, have a safety problem of difficulty in detaching feet from the pedals. The purpose of this study was to create a new pedal that maintains the benefits of already existing cleat pedals while improving the safety. After 38 minutes of cycling, muscle fatigue was compared between the new pedals and flat pedals by analyzing the electromyographic signals of major lower limb muscles and the maximal performance rpm(MPR). Percentage decrease in MPR after cycling was found to be similar between the two pedals (6.8% for new pedal and 8.0% for flat pedal). However, the new pedal has shown better performance than the flat pedal as the MPR of the new pedal was higher (145 rpm for new pedal and 137 rpm for flat pedal). Also for the same rpm during cycling, the power ratio between new pedals and flat pedals showed that new pedals are more effective (Rectus Femoris 89%, Biceps Femoris 68%, Gastrocnemius 31%, Tibialis Anterior 47%).

A procedure has been developed so that a die-face for stamping automobile outer panels can be designed and modelled efficiently. The procedure is composed of four parts each of which corresponds to modeling major components of a die-face, i.e. tipped product, blankholder, draw beads, and step draw.<br/> The modeling techniques developed specifically for die-face design enable a designer to generate the shape of a die-face quickly with the minimum input, and the resulting models can be used in FEM analysis and NC tool path generation. This will lead to the reductions in lead time and man-hours required for the design and manufacture of the stamping dies.
