Vascular leiomyomas are benign tumors of smooth muscle origin arising from the muscularis layer of blood vessel walls. They can occur anywhere in the body where smooth muscle is found and usually occur in the lower extremity as a slow-growing, firm, occasionally painful mass. However they are rare in the head and neck and very rare in hard palate. Here we report a case of a vascular leiomyoma presenting as a soft mass of the hard palate and review the literatures.

Natural and synthetic antibacterial materials are used in foods to avoid bacterial contamination-induced food poison and deterioration. Due to the human and environmental safety, natural products including plant extracts have been extensively added into foods as antibacterial materials. Since some of core molecules comprised in those plant extracts are hardly dissolved in aqueous phases or food matrixes, nanotechnological approaches have been suggested to overcome such obstacles. Here we report domestic and international various types of plant- or non-plant-origin antibacterial materials that have been commercialized and used for the food industry. To improve solubility and stability of such antibacterial materials, nano-encapsulation or nanocomplexation methods are also investigated focusing on the utilization of dextrins and proteins as coating materials.

Epidermoid cysts located in floor of mouth can be easily removed intraorally. The cysts inferior to mylohyoid muscle have been excised transcervically. However, an intraoral removal of a cyst extended inferior to mylohyoid muscle has not been reported yet. A 20-year-old female visited to the hospital with a cystic mass in submental region. Neck computed tomography revealed a 6.0×4.3cm sized circumscribed cystic mass in midline of sub-mental area. The cyst lied external to the genioglossal and geniohyoid muscle, extending inferior to mylohyoid muscle. The mass was removed successfully by intraoral approach. It was performed under the exposure by the division of genioglossal and geniohyoid muscle, traction of the cystic wall after aspiration of the cyst, and digital compression externally.

Foreign bodies in upper aerodigestive tract migrating into retropharyngeal space are rarely encountered emer-gent cases in otolaryngologic fields. A 60-years-old female presented throat pain and lump sense after a meal. Computer tomography showed metallic foreign body impacted in the retropharyngeal space. A hypopharyngeal perforation was suspected by through flexible laryngoscopy and gastrointestinal endoscopy. It was successfully removed by external cervical approach, and we report this case with a review of the related literatures.

This study investigated anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities of Sedum takesimense ethanolic extract, and 3 isolated compounds. To confirm anti-inflammatory and anti-acne activities, a nitric oxide (NO) inhibition assay, pro-inflammatory factor (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8) inhibition assays, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests were performed. The 3 isolated compounds were identified as 4,6-di-O-galloylarbutin (OGA), 2,4,6-tri-O-gal-loyl-glucose (OGG), and 1,2,4,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-glucose (TOGG). The ethanolic extract and isolated compounds (OGA, OGG, TOGG) effectively inhibited production of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8). Furthermore, OGG and TOGG exhibited MIC values toward Cutibacterium acnes of 12.5 μg/mL and 3.2 μg/ mL, respectively. These results suggest that S. takesimense extract exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells, and an antibacterial efficacy against C. acnes.
T2 후두 편평세포암종에서 단독 방사선치료와 항암방사선병합치료의 비교 연구

Background/Objectives: The efficacy of radiotherapy alone versus chemoradiotherapy has been studied in patients with T2N0M0 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Materials & Methods: Thirty nine patients with newly diagnosed T2N0M0 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma were treated with either radiotherapy(RT group, 66-70Gy) or chemoradiotherapy(CRT group, cisplatin based concurrent chemoradiation with or without 2 cycles induction chemotherapy including cisplatin, 5-FU± docetaxel / radiation therapy same with above mentioned). The mean follow-up was 73.5 months. Results: The overall survival (OS), disease specific survival (DSS), disease free survival (DFS), and larynx preservation survival (LPS) at 5 years were 70%, 79%, 67%, and 71%. The complete response rate was 82.4% in RT group, and was 95.5% in CRT group. OS (57% vs 80%), DSS (69% vs 86%), DFS (52% vs 77%), and LPS (63% vs 77%) at 5 years were higher in CRT group than RT group, but it was not statistically significant. In subsite analysis, CRT group tends to improve DFS, compared to RT group, in glottic cancer (p=0.06). The toxicities were tolerable and no fatal case was observed in both groups. Conclusion: Chemoradiotherapy is effective as primary therapy for T2 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and showed manageable treatment induced toxicity.
