This study investigated anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities of Sedum takesimense ethanolic extract, and 3 isolated compounds. To confirm anti-inflammatory and anti-acne activities, a nitric oxide (NO) inhibition assay, pro-inflammatory factor (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8) inhibition assays, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests were performed. The 3 isolated compounds were identified as 4,6-di-O-galloylarbutin (OGA), 2,4,6-tri-O-gal-loyl-glucose (OGG), and 1,2,4,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-glucose (TOGG). The ethanolic extract and isolated compounds (OGA, OGG, TOGG) effectively inhibited production of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8). Furthermore, OGG and TOGG exhibited MIC values toward Cutibacterium acnes of 12.5 μg/mL and 3.2 μg/ mL, respectively. These results suggest that S. takesimense extract exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells, and an antibacterial efficacy against C. acnes.
가덕도 연안 해수에서 분리된 Vibrio vulnificus의 검출 특성 및 항생제 내성

We investigated the distribution, molecular characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance of Vibrio vulnificus isolated from seawater at Gadeok Island, the Republic of Korea between June to October. Interestingly no isolates were detected between December to February. The detection rate of V. vulnificus was high (80-100%) from July to September 2019 and from June to September 2020. This coincided with the relatively low salinity of the seawater, which ranged from 7.8-29.9 practical salinity units for that period. Additionally, V. vulnificus had a high detection rate at sampling stations near the Nakdong river. The detection rates of virulence genes, such as vvhA, viuB, and vcgC, among the isolates were 97.1%, 44.1%, and 57.4% in 2019 and 100%, 43.0%, and 50.0% in 2020, respectively. Notably, viuB and vcgC were detected in V. vulnificus isolated between June to October when water temperature was above 20°C. The antimicrobial susceptibility analysis of 80 isolates revealed that most of the strains were susceptible to most antimicrobial agents. However, some isolates showed intermediate resistance to cefepime (18.8%), cefoxitin (58.8%), and erythromycin (22.5%). Of note, 3.8% of the tested strains were resistant to cefoxitin. The minimum inhibitory concentration of highly cefoxitin-resistant strains was determined to be less than 32 μg/mL.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the depuration process (artificial seawater sterilization using UV light) for extending the shelf life of raw oyster Crassostrea gigas and maintaining food quality. To confirm the effects of depuration, microbiological (viable cell count) and several physiochemical analyses (pH and glycogen levels in shucked oyster and pH, soluble protein, and turbidity in filling water) were carried out during the storage of raw oysters. The results showed that depuration could effectively extend the shelf life (2-3 days) of raw oysters with minimal change in food quality, including pH and glycogen content. Thus, the depuration process proposed in this study could successfully be applied to processing practices for other shellfish to extend their shelf life and contribute to the management of seafood safety issues.
